I love the sound of the Deltic's. I used to live near the station at Peterborough and I could hear these pulling out of the station at full bore.

Early on I thought the 37 class was a Deltic. The Deltic is actually the diesel motor not the body style. Outstanding video SK.
@ANDREWLEONARDSMITHАй бұрын
so how you tell the difference between a Deltic & the other classes that use the same body style? As far as i am aware there were 3 classes that used the deltic body style The class 37s The Baby Deltic & The Deltic itself I assume the Class 37s & Baby Deltics are smaller & shorter in length as they are only single engine machines & the real Deltics are Bigger & much longer in length to accomadate the second engine?

Most of them running on one engine sounding like a bag of spanners on heritage lines. Not what they were designed for.
@BegudMaximan-zp2tc6 ай бұрын
Exactly! To perform properly they require both power units running. But in private heritage preservation they have to be frugal with very relatively few spare parts as replacements.

The oil consumption on those Deltics must have been horrendous when they had a lot of hours on them,I’ll bet their fuel consumption wasn’t that brilliant either. To many moving parts in them but very powerful.

Why do they pump out so much smoke? Are they burning oil with the fuel like a 2 stroke bike?

They are 2-stroke Napier marine diesels. Not designed for the intermittent use as on locos.

Dandyes1997LoveAnimeGirl And Queen Elsa the HSTs we're introduced. Deltics weren't used as freight locos, and were envisaged as high speed passenger locos.
@bjoe3854 жыл бұрын
Bear in mind this is an assumption, Deltics were superseded for passenger duties by the intercity 125, which is 25 mph faster than the deltic. And I don’t think they were used for freight because of the 2 engines that usually needed replacing rather than repair, so the class 37, 47 and later 56 were likely a more attractive proposal.

May I respectfully suggest you have a hearing test? Any Merlin that sounded like that would need major work! 😉 They are both fabulous and unique sounding engines but to be honest, if you wanted to compare, try a Griffon, it's got a similar gruff power sound.
