That is a lot of money to generate 4 percent of electricity from nuclear. Many of the nuclear plants proposed are near prime agricultural land or near critical mineral mines. The cost of nuclear could rise to 600 Billion dollars. Thats a lot of dollars for 4 percent of electricity, Mr Dutton will raise the electricity prices by $1000 per household. The nuclear plants wont be starting till another 10 years, Why would tax payers fund this project? As no energy company is going to fund nuclear project, tax payers will have to fund it. Australia's grid is currently 40 percent renewable. Base load nuclear power will displace household solar and existing solar owners will lose money. There cant be both renewables and nuclear. How will the cost of nuclear be passed to consumers? Why does Dutton not answer this? The world is adding more solar and wind everyday. Does Dutton think people are stupid to believe him ? There is no advantage for nuclear. The massive costs of running coal mines for another 10 years while nuclear starts in 2035 will lead to more natural disasters through floods and bushfires. The Australian community will be paying for higher insurance prices due to natural disasters. Look at the floods in Queensland. Are people blind to natural disasters and the effects of coal and gas emissions? The world is adding SOLAR exponentially. Keep up with the real world news, not fake news from Sky news. Listen to Tony Seba: how gas, coal and nuclear will be obsolete by 2030. Look at why the petrol auto makers are going into losses in Germany and Europe and closing down. Its because less people are buying fuel cars. Look at the new solid state batteries developed by Honda. Keep up with real news.

Forget about Hydrogen..... to make it TAKES energy... usually, more energy than it creates. Like renewables, it's a good theory, looks great on paper, but practically, economically, financially.... absolutely useless. There are some countries, that a capturing the carbon emitted at the coal power stations before it is even released. THAT is better than renewables in all aspects. It has a small footprint, supply MORE energy, simply put, renewable energy is the most UNVIABLE energy source known to man in the last 150 years. And there is still one argument that can not be ignored.... the technology for SUITABLE batteries DOES NOT EXIST! It won't exist for at least another 50 years, by then, it won't even be needed, technology would have evolved and left renewables behind YET AGAIN! I look forward to a future nuclear power technology, the size of a 9kg gas bottle, powering a 100% off grid home for 20 years per rod. I believe it will happen because look at how far we have come already. This whole climate change garbage is actually about population growth and the energy required to sustain massive global populations (the globe will max out at 12Billion people, no more than that), and some greedy fuckers looking for ways to exploit this fact for their own financial gain, while making everyone, including governments comply to them, and them alone. One thing climate garbage doesn't factor in, is our ability to innovate and create new technologies.

Solar is already being curtailed at midday because there's too much of it being generated and there are no batteries to soak it up. This is sending prices negative and the energy companies can't make a profit if they are paying you to use their electricity. In what grid is nuclear going to make sense under this scenario? The only option would be to turn off solar. So this criticism is correct. They will have to force you to turn off your solar.

The host questions why the Coalition's transmissions cost is not 50% of Labor's cost if the Coalition plans for 50% renewables. The answer is that the cost to support renewable is not linear. Renewable in remote areas or offshore will cost a lot more than accessible renewables. Labor needs expensive renewables to balance the load so they can use the less gas to keep their emissions low. In the Coalition's plan, the nuclear plants run all the time, so you can just use the accessible renewables. They still need gas to backup these renewables, but less gas than in Labor's plan.

"Renewables" have a part to play but I see a future where Nuclear and gas form the majority of the grid. I guess we will see. Especially if we want more power. One thing thing a lot of people overlook is the fact that Nuclear and gas plants don't need to be replaced as often as "renewables" which mean capital costs are less. That's without even adding the cost of batteries and the disposal of all the toxic waste that comes from the batteries, solar panels and wind turbines.
