As a die hard fan of the little mermaid, its hard for me to see this story as more than fanfiction. The movie is very clear about Ursula's intentions with the crown. She was banished for trying to overthrown Triton and endangering the lives of merpeople. All the people trapped in her lair are victims of her scheams and not because shes a tortured soul, but because she doesnt value other peoples lives. She sees them as pathetics and never regretted what she did. Triton even tho harsh and unreasonable, is a loving father who actually regrets his bad actions and gets to learn with Ariel and none of that wouldve happen if he was as discribed in this book.

The book is a non-canon retelling/remake of backstories. The movie sequel and the tv prequel series provide real backstory for Ursula. She was a member of an enemy race of the merfolk (called the Cecaelia), she was not Triton's sister (that was the original idea that was dropped from the movie but kept in the stage musical). Ursula lived with her mother and sister (Morgana), and was dotted on by her mother while her sister was ridiculed. Ursula eventually tried to overthrow the royal family with her magic and was banished for it.

Except that was cheaply made and didn't feel consistent either. This doesn't too, don't get me wrong, but the sequel series didn't feel authentic. Ursula had a cheap, knock off sister with an inferiority complex....to a character who was as bitter as she was sadistic? The original outline of her character was enough. Her full past is ambitious, as an adult she was obviously a gifted magic user in Atlantis, she grew arrogant and more sadistic, until whatever relationship Ursula and Triton had fell apart after some 'close calls'. She was banished and she became bitter and more sadistic.

Yeah right... Why did she want to curse Ariel (who looks like her mother) if Athena was her "only friend". Also, in the third movie, the villain is Ursula's sister who claimed that her parents (mother?) showed favoritism towards Ursula. This sounds more like fanfic, or something that would come out of the "once upon a time" story.

That was the second movie where Ursula has a sister named Morgana, the third movie was about Triton being a killjoy and banning music from Atlantica after Athena's death. Honestly, after hearing the Little Mermaid Broadway cast album, I have been wanting the whole "Triton and Ursula are siblings" story. It makes sense of her motives. It makes her very similar to Scar in the Lion King. I know that there is Morgona in the sequel, but I'm not sure if that is officially seen as "Canon" and who knows, maybe they are half siblings? Maybe Posidon had a thing for Tentacles?

ursula and triton being siblings makes sense because they seem to be the few that have any sort of power. they'd likely be half siblings, since morgana in the 2nd movie mentions being ursula's sister but no mention of being related to triton. so ursula would be half witch half god. and it doesn't necessarily need to be an tentacle lady getting it on with poseidon, although based on the 2nd movie, i do think that's the case. the gods could procreate with anything and it could result in anything, the creatures that came from the gods before the olympians had multiple arms and legs and eyes.

It sounds like they walked straight into a self-fulfilling prophecy. Triton did everything he could to get rid of his young sister because he thought she was monstrous and would only become more of a monster over time. However, Triton's actions are what, in fact, directly led to Ursula being a vengeful sea witch, unwanted and exiled from not only humans but her own people as well!

My problem with this is that Ursula has a younger sister named Morgana who was featured in the sequel. This book obviously doesn't make mention of her, so unfortunately I can't consider it cannon at all. Although it might make some sense for Triton and Ursula to possibly be related, Ursula already has a sibling and I believe her mother is mentioned (?), so it's unlikely to actually be truth

I just roll my eyes at this video and the Book. That book is more like fan fiction than canon. I think Triton was strict but I don't see him being as heartless as that writer seemed to make him. I think the author was working out some issues of their own in writing that. I accept that Ursula was his sister as she does mention in the movie she use to live in the palace at one time. But other disney movies and other works would essentially contridict this telling of it. There have been many "origin" ideas for Ursula, I actually liked the one that was in the Once Upon a Time tv show. But to each their own.

This is my interpretation, villains like true monsters are made. Ursula did not begin evil, events in her life shaped her. I feel sorry for her in the beginning. No one deserves to be removed from people who care for them and be shamed for how they look. The sad part is she allowed herself to be so negatively influenced by these events (it'd be hard not to) that it created a permanent negative relationship with her niece. A child who was half her brother, half her friend. I wish she could have had a happy relationship with Ariel but Triton had to be the stopping force in that.

The most prominent ones I can think of are Scar from _The Lion King,_ Hades from _Hercules,_ and Elsa from _Frozen._ Scar hated Mufasa because of being second in getting the throne due to Simba's birth, Hades wasn't much of a fan of his job of being the God of the underworld (which in the movie, Zeus gave him that job), and Elsa was afraid of her powers so much so that she shut herself off from all contact with Anna after injuring her as a child. i think Triton have a lot of problems him self, control issues or jealousy maybe, to think that he would immediate exile his sister right after the passing of his loved one which is also the only one stopping him from kicking Ursula out. Ursula story is tragic, and personally i don't think that is how she should be treated, how ever it does not give her the free pass to do some or multiple bad things. i believed that there might be a possibility that if Triton have not kick Ursula out or even have an ounce of love for his sister, they might accept each other and have a better family bond over mourning over wife and a best friend. this back story of Ursula, for me personally, kindda relate to reality. it shows how messed up our society is. Knowing someone's back story is one thing. That doesn't negate that person's decisions later in life. Ursula could've made much better decisions on how she dealt with Triton. Even if Athena was no longer in the picture. One was to prove her worth despite her physical appearance. Not to Triton, but to the other mer-people. Since her decision was to enact revenge, she is still the villain who forced Triton into sacrificing himself for his daughter. That doesn't make Triton anyone's hero despite what Ursula did to her brother and niece. He's actually a freaking bigot from beginning to end. That doesn't make Ursula a victim. It just makes her blinded by her own vengeance. Which still would've ended in her own destruction.

Really comes off as fanfiction (and not the popular type), I'm sure there are other stories out there painting Ursala as an even more evil character then the movie, she may be a villain that is liked, but I think it's more "like to hate" and not the kind of "like" where we want her to change, be good, and live happily ever after because if that happened she wouldn't be the character we all like.

Ariel isn't just Triton's Daughter, she is also Athena's Daughter and she was the one most like her Mother, this book only confirmed that Ursula was a Monster even more, no because of her being an octopus or her abilities but because apparently Athena was a true friend to her the only one she had in fact, and despite Ariel reminding so much of her Mother Ursula still didn't hesitate even once!

The new book about Úrsula seems to rewrite her backstory quite a bit, as the sequel to The Little Mermaid reveals that she has a sister, Morgana, who is also half octopus. The sequel also demonstrates that Morgana is evil mostly because their mother loved Ursula, the more evil sister, more than Morgana. To prove her own worth to her dead mother, Morgana is attempting to finish what Ursula couldn’t and become the final monarch of Atlántica.

My thoughts are shame on Triton he didn’t deserve to be king. That being said we all have our choices to make and although Ursula was dealt a bad hand it was up to her to make her choices. Ultimately she was the one who chose to be bitter and act on revenge that lead to her death. You can either fall to the trenches or rise above them and be better. Was Triton right? If he saw her change even unchecked then perhaps he was however at that point he was also responsible because he could have prevented it. Perhaps what he really saw was her gaining the crown and didn’t like it. However my question is how young were they and if he was a child then the timeline is a bit off

I like the facts, but where does Morgana fit in then, because in the little mermaid two, she always said that her mother use to pick on her why can't she be more like Ursula. Did her mother give her up or something, because that movie just screamed rival sisters who seem to know each other very well and a mother who always pit them against each other. Why can't you be more like your sister. and who her favorite child was.

Interesting spinoff plot to her book. I'm curious though what the original 1989 film writers would have originally put. Example: Ursula says "In my day, we had fantastical feasts when I lived in the palace." She made digs at "fish folk" & the mer people regarded her as an evil sea witch, even though some kept going to her & princess Ariel. But where did she learn that stuff? Ursula couldn't have been the only octopus being. There may have been other octopus witch beings who lived lavishly at the palace too, since she acts so snobbish, but dwindled down, were frowned upon.

This book looks like feminist fanfiction. Aside from it completely contradicting the movies (all of them), it seems to push the "man is bad" line of reasoning. Neither were right (Triton and Ursula) yet neither were wrong either. It's kind of like a self-fulfilling-prophesy type situation. Triton sends her away and never gets along with her (refusing to almost) thinking she was a monster and would always be a monster, but in doing so Created the monster she would become. While Ursula was also in a difficult spot because of the tragedy that happened to her father.Which basically caused her to start to snap, and then losing her one friend and being banished in a short time only finished the process. But if I had to pick which sibling it all boiled down to as having started it: it would be Triton for getting rid of Ursula as a baby just because of the way she looked.

I always felt bad for Ursula even without the backstory. Just imagine if you were her. You’d be extremely massively obese, meaning both terrible health and everyone treating you worse (which we even see by the horrified reactions of her wedding guests when she ditches the Vanessa disguise!) You’d actually help Ariel by getting her to land, but then end up getting stabbed by a boat for involving yourself! Poor Ursula...

Seriously? Seriously? Let women be bad. Let women be evil. We don't need "evIL mEn" to push us to madness, do we? Or are we little girls who always need an excuse to do anything in their lives? I think if this storyline is true, then Triton self-fulfilled his own prophecy. Ursula never would’ve become what she did if she was banished to the human world in the first place, only to then be rejected upon discovering her true self only to then be rejected by her true family. I understand that Triton wanted to protect the kingdom from the monster he foresaw, but in attempting said protection he created the very monster he sought to get rid of. It’s the same with the story of Oedipus in Greek mythology. His father was told a prophecy he’d be killed by his own son. So in order to prevent it he sent his son away. Only to be killed by him anyway in a twist of fate when they met on a trail and argue and then fought, not knowing who they were to each other, so the prophecy came true anyway. Had he not sent his son away it wouldn’t’ve happened.

The little mermaid 2 and 3 contradict this theory. In the little mermaid 2, Morgana is Ursula's sister and was favored over their mother. If they were all siblings, why would Morgana only complain about Ursula and not also triton? Even in the original story, the sea witch was just a sea witch who lived on the outside of the kingdom.

I have read both this book & every book in this series except the recent captain hook book " never never" & honestly I cried after reading poor unfortunate soul: a tale of the sea witch & hearing how horrible Triton was to Ursula, I saw him as the true villian & Ursula as just a antagonist. Athena's death was something that affected Ursula when taking Ariel's voice as she didn't want to hurt athena's daughter because of how deep her friendship was with ariels mother. She had to focus in her pure rage & hate for Triton to do what she needed. I 100% think we should feel bad for Ursula. She had been hated all her life & in mistress ofvall evil( maleficent book) they showcase ursulas funeral & all the sea prinsessses attended it( Triton knew he was not welcome) which is her final resting place she could live in peace.

For people who doesn't understand how this story can relate to Triton, Ursula and Morgana here is explanation. Posidon had crush on Ursula's mother. And that how Ursula was born. But he could not be with her to royal duty and preferred Triton's mother and baby Triton. Mother of Ursula started hating him and some hate was given to Ursula too. Then she found man and she told Ursula that is her father (basically stepfather). Meanwhile Ursula's mother got another daughter with someone when Ursula's stepfather died. Younger Morgana was born. But because Ursula's mother still loved but hated Poseidon she gave more live to Ursula then Morgana and how sister riot is started. Everything is clear.
