What I would like to know is what sort of things would increase or decrease the chances of getting dementia as people age. So far I’ve read or heard that what increases the chances are strokes, hypertension, smoking, bad nutrition, loneliness, and poor mental activity, but I would like to hear it from a professional, mainly so I could help my parents and myself as I age to decrease the chances by doing things, or activities, or eating the right things to decrease that chance.

Having just watched this video, my 94 year old mother with stage 4-5 Alzheimers seems to have problems in all areas of her brain. She does not yet have hallucinations but every single aspect of everything mentioned. Mother refuses to go into a Care Home but this is now not as far off as we, her family once thought. Mother is a massive cause for concern because she still lives on her own and has carers twice a day. Adult Social Care Services say that mother still has " capacity" but it is diminishing rapidly.

Thank you for posting this very informative video. We are researching a 78 year old patient who developed delirium while in the ICU (acute change in behavior). Patient was unable to reverse delirium and now appears to have dementia. Two years ago, Professor Gordon Dutton diagnosed patient with Acquired Dyslexia as a result of breaking femur (FES), MRI shows no sign of stroke - only EEG shows unusual pattern. Thanks ago.

the cause is nt known then ? they know the intermediate causes but not the primal endogenous cause. that is nt knowing the cause, therefore this film is typical half of an explanation.

Can an untreated infection in the jaw bone be irreversible in regards to dementia? My short term memory is getting worse...&going back to old ways of doing things in which I was recently trained to do differently is becoming beyond troublesome, as well as experiencing many other symptoms like speech has been an issue since heat stroke as well some yrs sgo. Already have heart & kidney issues that progressively got worse, & blood pressure I was told two yrs ago I need to be on medicine due to extreme high pressure both times I was tested when in pain from my jaw&spine. I'm an herbalist & rejected any meds told I need. There are people who think it's funny to intentionally withhold me from a means of finances I was gonna use to pay to get my jaw bone taken care of. It's prolonged and is declining my health as well as keeping me in consistent physical suffering in pain.

RN here. Take the meds to treat the infection. Chronic Infections in or near your head can cause behavioral, neuro and psychological changes. An ENT told me when they remove infected tonsils in children sometimes their behavioral and ADHD symptoms stop.

could drugs effect this, or food, aluminum, what builds up between synapse and neuron? shouldn't that be studied, and how do these metals/chemicals penetrate the blood brain barrier?

Alzheimers is getting in the way of research into other forms of dementia, in my opinion. I care for a 70-year-old cousin with severe neurocognitive disorder. She has zero short-term memory and no executive function. But she is bright, articulate, and literate. This is possibly from NPH but her specialists aren't sure. The family thinks this has been going on since her late forties. This is the strangest set of symptoms I've ever seen. We can talk in depth about our family and early lives, about history and politics, and she knows who is president and the year. She has no recollection of what she had for dinner, her birthday celebration yesterday, or in what order one applies shampoo, conditioner, and soap. I'm not seeing the pattern here. What part of her brain is broken?

@foxiefair123 We considered that, along with lead exposure from rehabbing an old house in Houston, where humidity and mold are big problems. Now she is in a nursing home and can't remember her family and friends anymore. Whatever caused this initially, in the end it we couldn't fix it.

Alcohol definitely att least can lead to alcohol dementia. I haven't heard about smoking.

Smoking damages your blood vessels,and hence is a causal factor in vascular dementia.However,smoking by itself cant lead to dementia, but its a significant causal facor.

It has little to to with the fact we are living longer. If you look at the countries with the highest rates of Alzheimer's, you'll find that the countries that eat the most meat and dairy have the highest rates of Alzheimer's.
