I just discovered Hesse about two years ago and I have been blown away by his work. Your review is right on the money. Hesse was a master. Just the concept of Abraxas (Yes cool af) turned my world upside down. Hesse has opened my mind in so many ways. Thanks for making him known to the world.

Thanks for your kind words. Hesse is one of my favorite writers of all time. I also recommend Narcissus and Goldmund, if you haven't read it. Not many people know about it. At least, I've never heard anyone talk about it. It has a lot of the themes that appear in Demian, but told in a very different story.

Narcissus and Goldmund is my absolute favorite of Hesse’s books. The band Kansas has a song called “Journey from Mariabronn” which Kerry Livgren wrote about that book, that’s how I first became aware of Hesse. That book really impacted my life, it described my relationship with my brother (I’m Goldmund, he’s Narcissus) and really brought out a lot of emotions in me. I’m glad to meet someone else who’s even heard of it!

This is probably my favorite book by Hesse. First read this fifty or so years ago and it totally is still years ahead of its time. On one level it is such an easy almost childlike fairy tale unlike Hesse's very dark and disturbing masterpiece Steppenwolf. On another level it will leave you shaken and stirred. There will be before Demian and a different world after Demian

Katadactyl definitely, love that book. It is so gratifying to know that a younger generation like yourself Katadactyl ( millennial?) continues to rediscover and appreciate the great depth and psychological nuances of this incredible man. These books speak to the soul and the psyche and allow access into turbulent challenging times that continues to shape humanity whether it be the medieval world of Narcissus and Goldman or the insights of Jungian psychology or the birth of Buddhism. So thank you again for an awesome review and turning people on to a book and a writer that speaks to all generations for all time. Namaste

Wouldn't Demian represent the anima archetype according to Jungian psychology?
@biblioobscura7 жыл бұрын
Did you mean Demian the novel or Demian the character? I agree that the novel uses the feminine to help Sinclair realize his anima. I would argue many characters are key towards that point: Beatrice, his mother, Eva, Demian's mother. His interactions with them change the ways he views the world around him, his sexuality and morality. That is brought to a point when he creates the painting. The androgyny of the painting suggests his conflicting subconscious, torn by the anima embodied by the feminine and Demian's representation of the ideal masculine. While Demian may to some extent represent Sinclair's anima, I think it is the women who change, sharpen and define it.

I read Demian but understood nothing. May be because I'm not good with the language itself and mainly also because it being my first book to read lol but I was intrigued by the character Demian and his mother Eva... also how they appeared on Sinclair's dreams and formed a deeper bond, although they rarely interacted together for long... also the character Pistorius (that organist, I am afriad if I spell it correct) was fascinating and how he tried to visualize his wants and wills through Sinclair. Kromer played an important role as well for I believe he was the reason how Sinclair was dragged into the other realm of the world he called as darkness. Also the character "Abraxas" was an interesting thing to read. I was amused with the idea of how Sinclair went alone to change his life path, believing his dreams and deciding what's permitable and what's forbidden... I reckon the writer Hermann himself, was like a rebellion (I couldn't find a good word to write) and his views on religion confused me even more. Apology. But I hate to say that I didn't get the final conclusion... did demian die? What was his real identity? I remembered recalling two incidents when Sinclair found Demian almost in vegetative state, like a stone statue. But what happened to him at last? They were at war so as I was reading I thought Sinclair was about to die but the twist came and demian died then? Idk And all this idea about the power of the will to change things and make it happen seemed too absurd? Idk I didn't understand that part as well... also about Sinclair's sexuality preference, did he view Demian romantically as well? I know he was inclined to Eva but I slightly felt that he was attracted to Demian as well and probably that was the reason why he couldn't love anyone or approach girls that he thought were attractive like for e.g. beatrice. In short, I got nothing :( Sorry but can anyone explain me the book in summary, would be really helpful... thnx in advance
@haleyrichards53224 жыл бұрын
To be fair this explanation leaves out many key details about the book, this is a summary leaving out all the good symbolism that's within the novel. I just finished reading it, but I understood almost everything but there are still some things I need to decode. I for one can agree that Sinclair definitely most likely did like Demian. This can be inferred by the multiple explanations of Demian and his ideal "type". If you picked up on this, Sinclair's type is a half boyish half women facial structure, just like Frau Eva's. And in the beginning of the book and somewhere in the middle Sinclair describes Demian and half gentle like a women and masculine like a man. So it can be inferred the in the end Sinclair did have an affectionate view towards Demian. I can explain the book to you as best as I possibly can but I don't understand everything myself. I will explain some of the symbolism within the book. First with the birds, they appear glowing in areas of the book, this is most likely a symbol that Sinclair is leaving the nest. This can be seen when Sinclair has his dream about his mother morphing in Demian in a some what violating embrace. He's starting to understand his sexual drive (I personally think the reason his mother turned into Demian was because he loved Demian in a way) but the reason the embrace started as his mother was because his mother resembles innocence, and Demian resembles a more sexual perception, which is why it symbolizes Sinclair leaving the nest. (He's finding other people to love in place of his mother/family) Demian and Frau Eva are simply characters in his life that help him come forward to achieve his dreams. Frau Eva symbolizes the romantic part of his life which he longs for, but because he struggled with the light and dark for so long, he didn't want to participate in sexual acts or accept his feelings. Which leads me into Abraxas which is one thing you may have not understood. It's a godhead that both involves himself in the light and the dark, symbolizing that the two exist in harmony rather then exist in two different parts of the world, which Sinclair had thought of differently for so long. The other thing is the mark of Cain. As he grows older as he figures out himself the mark of Cain becomes much more evident within himself then he was as a child ( but of course there is much deeper meaning to it which you can figure out 😉) basically, he's struggling to come to his age, and Frau and Demian everyone he has met is all a step closer to achieving his dream. Everything has a symbol which leads him back to Demian. Such as the face he painted, he let his mind wander. And for sometime he thought it was Demian or the world itself, the painting looks like Sinclair's life. But when he meets Frau Eva he then realized the painting was her. Everything led him back to Demian and Frau Eva, which are the dream he has been longing for. Those are just parts of the book you gave to understand, there is much more to be talked about, such as the shadow mentioned throughout the book. I am no expert, but I understood the book pretty well, if you have any questions, even though this is a year later, feel free to ask. I hope I somewhat helped your confusion :) and yes, it does seem Demian dies. Of course, some of the book seems impossible with all the spiritual and follow your own path praised throughout. But, all of the characters in this book were very spiritual and it could be possible the bond between them was very large. Also, while in the writing of this book the author was going through dream therapy. It's simply if you believe it or not, of course you don't have to. But if you do, I think you'll find a lot of things that are unexplainable happen on the daily, not everything can be explained by science. I myself am not a spiritual, nor religious being, but I still find this book very important and meaningful. Also, Beatrice was not necessarily someone he liked but someone he worshiped. I also think the fact that she too, had half man half women features, all led back to Demian and his mother, the two people he truly loved. Which is why we see when he tries to paint her, she doesn't end up the same, she looks like Demian, which later we find out looks like Frau Eva. Sorry that dragged on a bit longer, reach out if you have any questions :)

Thank you for this review, I read this book for the first time over 40 years ago. It’s impact has been important because it shone light and provided ambiguous insights my world in that time. That said, this review awakens the possibilities of Abraxas in a new way. Much like every great transformational work does. That is the idea of acceptance being the message. Acceptance of light and dark living in harmony inside of myself. I must mention Siddartha as the another profound work from Hesse. I found it complimented Demian for me. Thank you for your review and awakening this book in me once again :)

For any and all who view Demian as containing a philosophy of life worth adopting you would be doing yourself a disservice if you have not yet read Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment. Hesse paints a rosy picture of the embodied philosophy of Demian (his voice for the philosophy of Nietzsche). I would argue that Dostoevsky paints a far more realistic picture of what this philosophy looks like in reality. Either way, one must always examine the other perspective. Proverbs 18:17 "The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him." Dostoevsky does an incredible job cross-examining Nietzsche.

Hi, I haven't read Demian but I was looking for reviews and I like your take on it. If you really love Demian, you should read Carl Jung's The Red Book and The Secret Teachings of All Ages by Manly P Hall. You will see that Hesse was inspired by those two. Carl Jung also talks about Abraxas.
@priyadharshinisathursamy39024 жыл бұрын
I have two very different interpretations of this book and honestly I think Hesse intended these different interpretations. 1) Demian (not sure if he is real or in Sinclair's head), Eva, Pistorius and Beatrice were all guiding figures in helping Demian understand him self. In this it seems like Hesse's intention was to show that good and bad are actually all grey and to find our line between them (Kinda like what you said). 2) Demian (along with Eva) is actually the devil himself....come to tempt Sinclair to fall and sell his soul to the devil. And Pistorius, Beatrice, Alfons Beck and Knauer (probably Sinclair's parents too) were all his chances to attain salvation (repent for his wrong doings) before Sinclair dies. But Sinclair rejects each of them and runs to Demian and sells his soul (Interpreted in him sending the bird flying picture to Demian). In this I feel like Hesse played a game because the readers like Sinclair followed (supported) Demian and therefore fell from grace too I have not expanded on the first view but both fell equally possible. How did you interpret it?
@haleyrichards53224 жыл бұрын
I much more agree with the first Interpretation. Though I think anything is possible for the text was meant to symbolize many different themes. But, the book is intended to be Sinclair's path to find himself. Though I can see where the second interpretation comes from. Not saying it's wrong, books infer so many different things. It's just I went very deep into the novel and I much more agree with the first Interpretation :D though I am pretty sure Demian was real, I don't think he was a figure in his head.

I think there's a difference between finding yourself and breaking yourself... I'm sorry but breaking free doesn't mean that a person forgets all his moral values... We are social creatures who depend on each other and push each other forward and drag each other down as well... That is the reason why humans are superior to all other beings because they don't just follow instincts like eating sleeping etc they have their own sense of right and wrong and every human being is born with it.... Its up to the person whether he kills that sense or follows it... So don't use the excuse of breaking free from all the laws and rules to do a bad deed...

I don’t believe in heavily censoring most content, but I also don’t want to just hand him a book that may mess with his reality. For some autistic kids, like my son, their reality can be fragile from time to time. Usually I try to read them myself first so he can at least come and talk to me about what he’s read. However, this time I cannot. He’s asked for it as a Christmas present. So any guidance or opinions would be so welcome.

The entire novel had too much anti-Christian sentiment and false doctrine teaching that only leads a person away from shunning evil completely and embracing all-goodness, as much as humanly possible, as often as possible. I think it just tried to hard to pass itself off as deep and meaningful when in actuality, it seemed like the mad ramblings of a lost soul which other lost souls would agree with. Seems a lot like this novel I wrote myself which contained all the same imagery of false doctrine before I turned to Jesus in my heart and soul.
