I think my best Bolt Action moment came from my first time playing. I don't actually own the game but the people at my local gaming club were kind enough to lend me one of their armies for the day at the club and play the game, and what a blast. My favorite moment from that game came about from me being outnumbered completely. I was US and my enemy was Germany, and from the beginning of the game he had the turn advantage, removing my armour from the battlefield leaving me with nothing but infantry and mortars on the battlefield versus his armoured force backed up with some more Jerry firepower. He held the initiative for most of the game, taking my units out left and right, and finally, huzzah! the dice swung in my favour and green after green order dice were brought from the bag, the initiative was mine. Pushing and outflanking my opponent, brewing up his tank in a flurry of bazooka fire, without him being able to defend himself was exhilarating as a first time player. Goodbye to the you go, I go turn order I was used to. This is what the chaos of WWII should feel like. I suppose my best moment of Bolt Action came not from what happened in the match (unfortunately, everything balanced out and the might of the Jerry firepower shredded up the last of my men, and, by the way, when you feel excited to even LOSE a game, that's how you know that this game is for you) but from how the game made me feel. I have watched Band of Brothers, I have watched Saving Private Ryan, but through the kindness of my local club members and through the phenomenal game that Warlord have presented us, I was finally IN the action. I felt it, I could imagine the bullets and shells whizzing past, ripping holes through buildings, followed by the guts and glory of the American infantry charging towards the German defensive line. I was in a miniature band of brothers that day. This game has changed my whole perspective on wargaming, and I cannot wait to finally get my hands on my own army and rulebook. Also, Kris, if you're reading this, thank you so much for allowing me to borrow your army that day, I owe this all to you.

Thanks for the video, a good move to show the changes. The changes look to work well without changing the game dynamics. Best game moment for me was in fact my friends in a game against me. I was about to take an objective to win the game with my sniper team when his artillery obs who needed double 6 to hit promptly did so, rolled 6 to wound followed by 6 for exceptional damage to take out the sniper. My one remaining man failed his morale test and fled! Game to my opponent, but was really exciting.

My most epic moment was when my Staghound menaged to win me the game that I saw as lost cause. My 1st Polish Armoured was pushed back by Fallshirmjager supported by some heavy equipment - Tiger, StuH and Puma. For worse, my own artillery observer shelled my center, pinning most of the infantry down. With half units gone to ground, my armour desperately tried to stop German advance. With Cromwell playing "cat & mouse" with Puma on the right and Stuart desperately defending left flank from waves of Fallshirmjagers (and respectively dying of Panzerfaust fire), my brave Staghound menaged to overmanouvre enemy forces and in two last turns he took out StuH and Tiger. I menaged to unpin my infantry and take objective, which was the bridge somewhere in Holland. Funny thing is, my Stag keeps collecting heavy tanks from that time, with IS-2 on his account too. Remember fellow British Army players - take your Staghound with you, when everyone fails, he will save the day.

Cannot wait for second edition! The most epic moment I've had is when my opponent needed a 6 to hit a target with a Brumbar tank. He rolled a six, but wait! The presentation from John and Justin was just how wargames amongst friends should be played, that is, having fun and making your friend suffer!!! Really enjoyed the post game analysis. Just one real criticism: the FO walking out into the open and claiming victory points on the armoured transports, really did not get the logic of that rule. Experienced Bolt Action games may be able to advise.

My most epic moment in Bolt Action was during my first game where my Sherman assaulted 4 units guarding an objective. I caused 3 of the units to break. Sadly haven't been able to get Bolt Action in any form so I have no great game stories to tell. I have never played Bolt Action, but am looking to get into it. There are a couple of oddities that bother me from the demo. One, it seemed that you could not fire your mortars at people they could not see. That is pretty well the point of mortars, they are for all intents and purposes light artillery. The other thing, a guy poping out and making APCs disappear is bizarre to me. I may be biased, as I spent most of my working life in a mechanized battalion, where the APC was a large part of the sections firepower, which means it not just fires, it produces most of the fire power (LAV III). I understand tactics have changed over the years, but even just making it pull back would make more sense than it just disappearing because a spotter with a rifle comes out, when they each have a Bren gun. The fact that you changed HE to to template but not flame is odd, but not a deal breaker by any means. However, the template weapons, like mortars, even when they miss should have a chance to hit something. If I am aiming at an MG nest, and over fire a bit, it is entirely possible that I am going to smack some one behind them. Most other things are details that I understand are hard to put into games (eg don't stand in front of a firing tank, as you will now have a concussion), however machine guns tend to annoy me in games. I feel like taking a bunch of game designers (to include video game designers) and teaching them classes in the theory of machine gun fire. Machine guns are a template style weapon, as they hit a beating zone (bullets are not lasers, they are fired at a bit of an upward angle, and then the arc due to gravity starts bringing them down, like when you want to hit some one with a baseball, you have to aim a little high at distance, and the ball hits at a downward angle). That, and when set up on a tripod, as the ones in machine gun teams are set up in, work as indirect fire too, which was used quite a bit in both world wars. They tend to have adjusting dials, so as some one calls in your shots (like artty) you adjust the dials and match the bubbles (like a wood working level) and fire again. The part about the assault rifles I like. It is the same as This is Not a Test, and it works well in that. It also makes sense, not because balistaclly the bullet can not go as far (depending on rifle it may or may not), but bolt action rifles are more accurate, especially back then, so making up for the improved accuracy by increased total range, and by proxy increased "short range" over assault rifles is a good way to handle that.

He forgot to buy the spotter for them it costs an extra 10 points - why it is optional instead of compulsory is a mystery to a lot of us
@ostrowulf8 жыл бұрын
+John Mumford (Truscott Trotter) Okay, that I can deal with. Not everyone (especially at this time) has comms with the mortar and/or knows how to call it in. In fairness, a lot of times at Pl level a mortar will fire with no spotter, just firing at targets they see or at suspect areas, which would include shooting at things you can not see, but pretty innacurstely (also illumination rounds, but that is a whole different kettle of fish), so they do get used without actual spotters in a similar fassion to a direct fire weapon at times. Cheers, that is one less thing bothering me.

My friend and I picked up the Tank Fury set each and swapped tanks around a while back. I've gone Allied and he's gone Germans. I have number of shots and he had high armour. While we have fun playing (Always more fun than i remember when we haven't played for a while) I can't help but think it feels a little too weighted in favour oh high armour. The germans can put out tanks that most allied tanks need straight 6s to chip the paint on, and infantry laregly seems to be pointless if theres tanks on the table. Its a very fun game, and I loved it when my 6 shermans had a dice spike early in a game meaning he was down a tank before he could shoot so with my 6 models vs his 3 I was always going before him and taking down or pinning his tanks before they could do anything. Likewise I hate it when I end up in situations where I need dice spikes to achieve anything.

So I played with some experimental rules last year. Hidden units were denoted with tokens (pieces of paper with the unit's name flipped down) and I was facing off against an American player with my Germans. First turn, the Yankee dog gets the first dice. He advances along a road. Before him are two tokens, on either side of the ride on my side of table, both behind hard cover. One was my Puma, the other a veteran infantry unit. The Puma happens to be my only significant anti-tank threat against his Sherman/Greyhound combination. A detail. He advances along the road with his Sherman, selects the Puma as his target and opens up. A damn bold move I think, coming so far forward with minimal cover. I think to myself that such folly will be responded with in time. However, what proceeds this damn-your-eyes, cavalier foray into my sector can only be described as the most incredible, and dare I say genius series of 6's rolled that I have ever seen. My opponent, a damn fine chap it must be said, ruefully smiles as he rattles off one 6 after another, penetrating my armor and incinerating the poor, hapless Germans who reside within! The game would go onto be a rather close one, ultimately being a narrow American victory, but it was certainly a game to remember!

Both me and my opponent agreed that he was man of the match.

just couple of things I noticed but I'm unsure I'm right, during about turn 2 or 3 you run an artillery piece accross the brown ground, which I assume is rough? Probably the best game I ever played was against a player running Germans ( late war) vs. my early war French. Coincidentally, it was not only my second game ever, but his as well. In the .first of a convention, surrounded by bloodthirsty plastic death Lords, we had a blast, and he thoroughly condemned the armor thickness of the Char B-1 and the savagery of Senegalese, while I learned of the stinging bard of assault rifles, and near invincibility of veteran SS.

Best moment was rolling a six for an artillery barrage, then six for range catching 5 enemy units. However it did not stop there, I then rolled a six for the first unit which brought down the heavy howitzer and then three sixes for 18 hits. My opponent had chosen to go down and only took nine hits but his mmg team was gone. I then rolled another six again for the next unit which suffered only 4 hits after going down. I only pinned the next three units but at this point his charge across Pegasus Bridge had all but faltered. I know I will probably never roll that again so it was lucky that I was at my local club at the time with a few others who were watching.

Longstop hill scenario - british regulars take the fire of two german mmgs and a grenadier squad, unpin with the help of the nearby officer, charge the grenadiers, win the close combat, consolidate to cover, charge the first mmg, win the combat, consolidate behind the second mmg, get charged by a reinforcing grenadier squad, win that combat and next turn take the last mmg squad in the rear! V.C. Awarded to the corporal leading the squad.

Liking the rules. Mortars seem to only act as forcing opponents to move. Also would have loved to see a armor save system. My test is gona be 4+ start. Light cover +1 or heavy cover +2. Lmgs -1 , morter -1 / -2 direct. Sniper -3 (due to deadly accuracy). Tanks and emplacements would follow above rules based off both players agreement at start.

Edit, could make it so mortars treat cover as 1 less for armor save

allowing multiple tanks and templates makes bolt action worth a second look. good job warlord.

I'm liking the report and the changes I've seen, but I'd argue the dense terrain rule would prevent the Puma from seeing the Firefly at 17 minutes (at least it warranted a closer look)

My best was probably in my first ever game of BA with my brother (sibling rivalry bonus). With my first shot my MMG took out his hidden sniper. Oh the look on his face was priceless. :)

John missed an opportunity to drive his firefly thru 2 german infantry platoons making them take a motivation check or run off. i like the v2 changes overall. The only thing that I'd like to see have a minor change to the rule of when your own troops provide soft cover to units behind them. What I mean is this. If your own troops can provide soft cover for troops behind them, then the shots that miss the far platoon, should be rolled again to see if they hit the platoon providing the soft cover. It would only make sense that if i'm having to shoot through a unit at another, then they should be in jeopardy also.

Looks interesting, sadly I didn't have a game of bolt action yet, but I'm really keen on starting to play this!

Best Bolt Action moment was then I was play German vs US with a friend. I Had a big US infantry force, but they where all inexperience except my sniper team (veterans). My friend had a very strong German veteran infantry force. I expected to be crushed but my sniper team took out his officer, all squad based LMG teams and some NCO's. My sniper team won the day for me :D

mortar team shoot at a spot on the field not at troops. so once a team shoots , no matter what units move in to that crater, spot the mortar should still get the advantage on the roll of the dice

Awesome video. Love the table. What is the best gaming system for this style of gaming?

They highly overestimate the power of a machine gun firing ground to air at an aircraft, should definitely be 6's to hit
