Thumbs up for mullets?! Brian shared some more thoughts on the duo, here: www.vitalmtb.com/features/Demo-Mullet-vs-Demo-29-Specialized-DH-Bikes-Go-Head-to-Head,2937

I can't quite put my finger on the reason why, but this guy seems like a true expert on Mullets.

I wonder how much of the stability of the 29 can be attributed to the Ohlins and tire width setup. It'd be great to redo this sort of test with equal suspension and tire width, or to simply make use of the mullet's capability of running a 29 setup vs the mullet setup to remove all other variables.

Absolutely. I would argue that for some people Öhlins vs Rockshox is a bigger difference than 29 vs Mullet

I’ve been racing the Demo 29 Race the exact version in this video and it’s been really good. But I definitely feel like it’s much harder in the trees and tight stuff then the mullet set ups. I’m the youngest pro in my race series and I’m def at a disadvantage but still charging hard pulling good results with this rig. Excellent bike, it’s for sure the most stable bike I’ve ridden as well.

Awesome comparison! Thanks for that! Now just wondering how the demo 8 carbon frame compares to the aluminum demo 9? 🤔🤔🤔
@RiderP4114 жыл бұрын
huh? What does that mean? These are new demo 8 and so far no carbon, what's demo 9?

If you mean new demo to old carbon demo it's no comparison, new ones are way better in wheel path, anti rise and progression. And cog is way lower.

Well I have a demo 9 pro frame that thing weighed 50lbs from factory I got it down to 41lbs with modern parts that's only big difference I see from 8 and 9 is the weight.

Appreciate it Weston. The Demo 8 was a sleek, awesome looking machine, the mullet and 29er is a completely different bike with many different changes. Check out the Specialized 29er review we did last year that explains many of the differences.

As a Medium frame rider I fell for myself 29" wheels are too large unless you really need that straight line high speed stability which isn't needed where I live. I fell for Medium riders a 2.35 or 2.4" rear wheel matched with a 2.6" front tire is perfect. The 2.6" tire basically makes the diameter closer to a 29er and give you all the grip where you need it.

Short question ? Where’s the problem with putting the mullet set up with the 2020 version? Because it’s in the middle section I guess? Also with the 2021 model in the middle section are both wheelsizes possible? The only difference is that I can not change this 3 adjustments short,middle, long? Thanks for any advice :) merry Xmas everyone..

Good stuff as always! It seems like Specialized is trying to make a very racy bike (29" with Ohlins) a little more friendly and enjoyable off the racetrack. Those Ohlins forks are pretty gnar if you're just out cruising, even for the bigger riders - smart spec change IMO.

For every class of bike you upgrade to, like going from trail to enduro to dh, the stanchions must must must get thicker, and the rotors need to grow exponentially! Most people, bikes are fine from factory, but us heavier guys who like big features and steep terrain, our factory bikes just wont cut it unless you fork over half your savings. My big enduro bike has 35mm stanchions, I think I'll be upgrading that eventually, but I have an upgraded jade coil on the back with 650lb spring...I'm 215 on a bad day by the way, and then finally switched the wimpy 180mm rear rotor for a 200mm and it is a totally different bike when at the parks. Still want to got 220mm rotor up front! Anyone that tells you differently just isnt as heavy as us and they domt understand!!!

Would an average rider benefit from a mullet set up?
@bbuell804554 жыл бұрын
I think anyone can benefit. There are many variables that will ultimately lead to a final decision, and a lot of it does come down to terrain, and personal preference/riding style.

Can someone exlpain to me why the reach on the Demo is so small? I want to buy one but the only available size at my local dealer is S3. I am a bit worried that it‘s too small since my Meta has a way bigger Reach and it feels awesome. Unfortunately test riding is not possible.
@bbuell804554 жыл бұрын
The 466mm reach in the S4 did not feel small to me being 6 foot 1 inch. How tall are you?
@florianw.5604 жыл бұрын
@@bbuell80455 Yea i imagine S4 would be perfect. I am 6 foot. As I mentioned I could only buy a S3 with 446 mm Reach.
@grantrogers18583 жыл бұрын
Check out neko mullalys test vids. He was saying when staying neutral on the bike the shorter reach allows the weight on the pedals to also put more traction on the front wheel through the feet without having to consiously focus on weighting the front. also the shorter reach allows a bit more movement towards the back of the bike in steep stuff before the arms are at full extension. i think part of the thinking with dh bikes is that the slacker headangles and extra travel allows shorter reaches due to those former attributes meaning more stability and trail numbers being high ie front wheel feels more out front compared to a trail bike
@aidenthwaits26464 жыл бұрын
I would’ve tested it using the same spec bike for both, so that it’s more fair. It would’ve kept one variable. But Ik it can be tough to do.
