Jimmy Carter was right wing compared to his party, but he was one of the most humane, truly caring presidents in American history. Republicans would stop him every step of the way, and plenty of democrats as well who wouldn't want their precious wealth tampered with. He was my ideal president in terms of character and what I wish the country could be, and I voted for him twice, but I've learned that if you can't negotiate with the other half of the country then there's not much you can get done, and it would only serve to anger the other side further.

While I'm not sure how the US system works: in The Netherlands a vote not cast means the percentage required for a seat in government goes down. I will add that our voting system is not dependent on registering as a voter: being a registered citizen makes you get your voting pass from local government automatically. Everytime I see people in my country saying "I'm not going to vote, because I think the system doesn't work for me anyway" I immediately explain that they need to cast a blank vote and explain why that is (a blank vote keeps the percentage required for a seat up, but the blank vote means it won't benefit any party member).
