Honestly, it's very simple. Give people the option to read a post, but if there is evidence to the contrary, provide a disclaimer and links to pages where conflicting information can be found. Hell, you can even label it as false or misleading and provide evidence to back it up. This can even be done with LLMs now, but it would require a shit ton of compute. The issue is programming the AI in a way that it doesn't exhibit any kind of political bias, like its makers. But it can be done and should be done. It would lead to a civilization of better-informed and more critical-thinking individuals. *edit The issue always boils down to censor or don't censor. It's getting to the point now where we're advanced enough technologically where the question shouldn't be how to censor misleading information, as it has always been done in the past, but instead, how do we use our technology to educate people about the facts. The problem is that social media may seem like a breeding ground for this kind of misinformation, but people socialize regardless of its existence, and misinformation will spread even in its absence. All social media does is accelerate the spread of misinformation, but it can also be used to accelerate the spread of facts.

We already know (via well documented Congressional testimony) that our intelligence agencies like to embed themselves in mainstream journalism. It would follow that they would also seek to create or co-opt hubs of "official truth" to support official narratives. Took Facebook app off my phone couple months ago I believe i forgot when I never actually fully left but i think i will. My boyfriend asked did you abandon your Facebook account. I mean he keeps begging me to come back on Facebook he doesn't want me to leave. I'm leaving for personal leaving reasons that's my personal choice what I want to do. He thinks it's ridiculous I want to leave. The more he keeps saying come back on Facebook the more I want to leave and step back from Facebook. I told him how many times i dont know. I get depressed on it I told him many times. He doesn't want me leave. I told him I want to be a private person I don't want to be online. But he says that doesn't make sense.

@Sara-rt5mq yup. I don't need social media to keep in touch with people or my boyfriend. I don't need my boyfriend on there. He has me in real life. But it's like he needs me on there. He said he sad that that I don't use it. I don't use it for many reasons. One because of cyberbullying that happened to me he knows about that but he still doesn't want me to leave. He's also had a meltdown he unfriended me last year. It hurt. Also I had friends on Facebook that blocked me for no reason without saying anything to me I am completely tired of being blocked for no reason nobody really talks to me on Facebook anymore 😔 and it feels like my friends don't even have my back when they say they do. But unfortunately there mutual friends blocked me. I don't even know what I did wrong I didn't do anything wrong. All I do is just share a funny positive photos on Facebook.

This is exactly why we can't censor anything, and why it needs to be made illegal to do so. If you start censoring things, the rules risk becoming too broad and stringent to the point where critical and valid viewpoints won't be free to express. When you take away a person's ability to speak about such things, it will only radicalize them further. Those views don't magically go away. If anything, it just makes their influence on the individual more powerful.

I still have my account purely because some people insist to be on messenger (at least it's E2EE now) but haven't really posted or used the platform since the promoted post slop started taking hold. If the Washington Post doesn't come up with a good enough reason for letting Anne Telnaes quit, I'll go elsewhere. If traditional news, and that includes the 6:30 news at night, doesn't clean up its act and divorce itself from its publishers and advertisers, filling the news void will be the subscription services you see advertised everywhere that sum up a news story in one paragraph.

Somehow Maria Ressa's call to "collaborate" has negative implications dating back to WWII. Those families and politicians that decided to accept and help the Japanese takeover of the Philippines during the Occupation were called "collaborators." Even the Vichy Govt in France was called a collaborator. Right now we see these oligarchs bowing to Trump and to the right wing and for me, they remind me of the collaborators that my parents described to me growing up post WWII in the Philippines. I think there are better terms such as grassroots organizing, community building, etc tjat would capture the essence of what needs to be done to fight our way out of this hatefilled time we are facing.
