El Salvador’s "Cool Dictator" Bukele Begins Controversial 2nd Term with Backing from Biden & Trump

Self-described as the “world’s coolest dictator,” Nayib Bukele was sworn in Saturday for a second term as president of El Salvador in a move widely denounced as illegitimate. El Salvador’s constitution limits presidents to one term and prohibits consecutive reelections. However, a 2021 Constitutional Court ruling approved Bukele’s reelection bid after his allies in the Salvadoran National Assembly illegally removed all five magistrates from the court and replaced them with Bukele supporters. Democracy Now! speaks with Roman Gressier, a reporter in San Salvador covering Central American politics for El Faro English, about Bukele’s popularity during his dramatic crackdown on gangs, the surveillance of journalists and human rights organizations, and the “parallel U.S. delegations” to Bukele’s inauguration from both the Biden administration and a cast of right-wing, Trump-aligned characters despite growing condemnation of Bukele’s authoritarian rule.

However it's disrespectful to all Salvadorans when you don't talk about the background in which Bukele was elected and how the situation improved in the first place. From being one of the most violent countries with high rate crimes to become a place where people finally feel safe and optimistic about the future. The way these "human rights organizations" talk is very far from the real life of a normal Salvadoran. The FMLN has lost all it's credibility not because of Bukele but because of its own lies and mistakes. People are tired of them and no one wants to get back to the days of the guerrillas and burning buses on the streets. Please do more research and try to reflect on what Bukele really represents for people. He has a dark side, true, but it's not the whole story.

I am Salvadorean, El Salvador was a failed state, the gangs ruled over 80% of the small country ( with the full support of the 2 major political parties) . The political parties dedicated themselves to steal, destruction of the environment, while the population was being murdered, raped, made to pay bribes just to live to the gangs. Bukele ended all that nightmare for the Salvadorean people, thus, his high support among the masses. Bukele has brought Democracy for the first time in the history of EL SALVADOR.

The constitution was not democratic. No western democracy has a one-consecutive-term-limit. It was ridiculous. I came back from El Salvador today actually after being there for four days. We rented a truck and it was 9 of of . Mind you , I’m Afro Spanish so I have dark skin. I’m tatted all over . Sat in the truck of the bed and beach shirtless . We drove past the military and police with no problem . We were kind of reckelss though because we were drinking in the back etc etc but we had no problem at all with the authority. If anything, being dark and tatted gets you A LOT of looks from the girls so that was a plus .

El Salvador’s politics are more nuanced than what is visible. These politicians are from the US are just riding the bandwagon of a country they have referred to as “shithole country.” If you don’t understand the societal dynamics in which regular non gang families endured prior to Bukele then keep your ignorant comments to yourself or better yet comment on the politics of your own countries/communities. And yes most Salvadoran people love him except those with family members in prison/or gang members. They're not calling him a dictator for helping his people but rather for his capacity to round up people without due process, the unconstitutional reelection and his controlling of the entire state apparatus, including the legislative and judicial branches. This report is highly inaccurate, Bukele has more than 90% of popular support and almost 100% recognition to his results. What is really disturbing is the prescence of the far right of the USA. But most of the statements in this report are lies: there’s no dictatorship, he refers to himself as a “cool dictator” just to be sarcastic, there’s plenty of free speech, no journalists are prosecuted, no repression to public protests, etc. Certainly the proven corrupt old politicians are facing justice or they are on the run.
