Self-described as the “world’s coolest dictator,” Nayib Bukele was sworn in Saturday for a second term as president of El Salvador in a move widely denounced as illegitimate. El Salvador’s constitution limits presidents to one term and prohibits consecutive reelections. However, a 2021 Constitutional Court ruling approved Bukele’s reelection bid after his allies in the Salvadoran National Assembly illegally removed all five magistrates from the court and replaced them with Bukele supporters. Democracy Now! speaks with Roman Gressier, a reporter in San Salvador covering Central American politics for El Faro English, about Bukele’s popularity during his dramatic crackdown on gangs, the surveillance of journalists and human rights organizations, and the “parallel U.S. delegations” to Bukele’s inauguration from both the Biden administration and a cast of right-wing, Trump-aligned characters despite growing condemnation of Bukele’s authoritarian rule.

I support your work, especially in regards of the Palestinian ongoing genocide. As for Bukele, I see you want to make a point of challenging the legitimacy of his second term. However it's disrespectful to all Salvadorans when you don't talk about the background in which Bukele was elected and how the situation improved in the first place. From being one of the most violent countries with high rate crimes to become a place where people finally feel safe and optimistic about the future. The way these "human rights organizations" talk is very far from the real life of a normal Salvadoran. The FMLN has lost all it's credibility not because of Bukele but because of its own lies and mistakes. People are tired of them and no one wants to get back to the days of the guerrillas and burning buses on the streets. Please do more research and try to reflect on what Bukele really represents for people. He has a dark side, true, but it's not the whole story.

Everyone loves to call him a dictator.. But nobody was there when my people were being slaughtered, women raped and young teens forced to join gangs! Nobody cared when El Salvador was the murder capital of the world! Now that this amazing god fearing president came to help turn El Salvador around, everyone has something negative to say! WHERE WERE YALL THE LAST 40+ years?! The people of El Salvador re-elected him, the rest of the world should take notes! Those gang members who committed atrocities to the people, shouldn’t have human rights! I said what I said! Until you lived through what my people lived though, you have no room to criticize Bukele! He has what many world leaders are lacking, faith in god and BALLS!

I am Salvadorean, El Salvador was a failed state, the gangs ruled over 80% of the small country ( with the full support of the 2 major political parties) . The political parties dedicated themselves to steal, destruction of the environment, while the population was being murdered, raped, made to pay bribes just to live to the gangs. Bukele ended all that nightmare for the Salvadorean people, thus, his high support among the masses. Bukele has brought Democracy for the first time in the history of EL SALVADOR.

It exposes that these "human rights organizations" have an agenda and it is not aligned with democracy or the safety of the people or actual human rights, like the right not to get murdered on open street. The constitution was not democratic. No western democracy has a one-consecutive-term-limit. It was ridiculous. And the state of emergency was obviously needed as El-Salvador essentially was in a state of war. Nobody called Roosevelt a "cool dictator", nobody regards the founding fathers as having acted "unconstitutionally". Why the hell would any good meaning soul defame a democratically elected president, who saved the country from evil, brutal gangs. This was a win for the people, a win for democracy and a win for freedom!

If we accept that dictatorial powers were necessary to destroy the powers of gangs, they should have been limited to very short time period until the threat was over. Him stopping the crime problem does not mean he should be allowed to dismantle protections for Salvadoran democracy long term. They rather focus on the human rights of murderers and extortionists rather than the actual working class population. The Salvadoran people finally have dignity to live and work for their own. All my family is from El Salvador and they all are grateful for President Bukele for helping the country heal. My grandmother is moving back from the USA. He illegally attained the presidency, did you miss that part? His second administration was in violation of the constitution of the country. Secondly I don’t see him putting the people of El Salvador first, but simply just brutally cracking down on anyone suspected of being a gang or gang affiliate. I don’t see him doing anything progressive or redistributive. I don’t see him cracking down on the rich, I don’t see him re-distributing the wealth of the country. I only see him cracking down on the poor, which is usually a good sign that he is something other than a progressive beneficial leader.

@@edbenti5007 The high approval rate is no coincidence. The people of El Salvador have experienced the transformation from the most unsafe country in the world to the safest country in the entire Western Hemisphere. Everyone there knows people who were brutally murdered by the gangs or lost a family member of their own, their child, their mother or brother. Even children were drilled to murder. Politicians, Judges, officials, soldiers, corruption and gang violence were omnipresent, they even controlled the prisons. Cuba,Nicaragua and Venezuela are also dictatorships they make themselves as the victims in those countries governments and by the Cuba has two blockades the another one is internal blockade which the Cuban government is restricting the Cuban people making hard to food and medicine and also they cut off the electricity in the country. And also another one blockade is the American government against Cuba but the American government also help the Cuban government and economy with by Food exports and tourism. And also in Nicaragua economy is a full with everything like supermarkets,Restaurants and food distribution for the whole country. And also in Venezuela there is a lot of classism and inequality their economy works out with other currencies like the US dollars,Euros,Brazilian Reals and Colombian Pesos. And also there parts of the country that there parts of people that are doing good and the other half of people that are struggling to making means ends. The most unsafe country on the planet has been transformed into the safest in the entire Western Hemisphere. They know very well why they vote for Bukele. The alternative would be to not get complaints from people like you, but losing family members due to gang violence. If they listened to people like you, El Salvador would still drown in chaos and pain. They didn't have the luxury of dealing with crime the way Western countries can. It was war. "Democracy Now!" may I remind you OF YOUR NAME. Calling Bukele's second term unconstitutional is the worst case of malicious compliance I have ever seen. Was the Boston Tea Party unconstitutional? Did the founding fathers act unconstitutional? Was Roosevelt unconstitutionally elected a third time? Which western liberal democracy has a single-consecutive-term-limit?? NONE!! That part of the constitution was undemocratic. Also, the last time I fact-checked democracy-now on claims of abuses of journalists, it turned out that you were mourning known terrorists, so I wouldn't be surprised if you weren't in fact just speaking of gang memebers with a press-pass.

He has done away with due process to fight the gang crisis, imprisoning many innocent people. You might not think he was so great if you got snatched off the street for no reason other than tattoos or long hair.

@@Melody5p I find it odd that you're telling me that the police there have never made a mistake. They've made a ton of mistakes here in the U.S. I think it's important to stay vigilant about the police or any other group with the "monopoly of violence," as Weber called it. When the gangs had the monopoly of violence, that was horrible too. But I think Bukele has taken advantage of the crisis to take complete control of the country. Yeah, I'm a gringo, what right do I have to tell you what's happening in El Salvador. But I hope you would tell me what's happening in the U.S. that we are in denial about, too.
