my grandfather was a proud WW2 vet and conservative Republican state senator in New England. In the 60s, he was even cautious about civil rights, but he railed against inhumane conditions in our prisons. That was his issue, and he thought (correctly, at the time) that both parties in his state could agree on this. He condemned and left his party in 2003 when it became clear that Bush was torturing people, and gradually became more ashamed of his country, until he died around 2008. I can only imagine what he'd say now, but I'd give my life just to hear him say it to Trump or Vance's face
