A new film called “Takeover” follows the 12 historic hours on July 14, 1970, when members of the Young Lords Party took over the rundown Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx in New York City. The Young Lords were a radical group founded by Puerto Ricans modeled on the Black Panther Party. Democracy Now! co-host Juan González, a co-founder of the Young Lords, helped organize the action. Using archival footage and modern-day interviews, “Takeover” chronicles their resistance to institutions founded on wealth and white supremacy, and their collective struggle for quality, accessible healthcare. “The takeover really exemplified what the Young Lords were about,” says director Emma Francis-Snyder, who says she wanted to capture the heroism of the activists. “There’s so much emotion and planning and courage that comes along with direct action,” Francis-Snyder says. “We understood that to get the system to listen and change, you had to disrupt it,” adds González. “You had to find a way to force people to pay attention to the problems.”

Such important part of history. So proud as my grandmother trained there as a nurse in the 1890’s and my mother (from Dominican Republic) trained as a resident doctor in the late 1960’s. Juan Gonzalez bravo for a life time of dedication to journalism and civil rights. Of seeking the truth. Amy Goodman thank you for journalism.

Save your souls: Russia-Gate not a thing, clearly established. The DNC, as the RNC, are two sides of the same corporate crap double sided coin. Established since the last Democratic POTUS left the White(‘s) House, with solar panels on the roof. Despite their Oscar, and their Right Livelihood Award, The White-helmets are bad, again, clearly established. Douma OPCW debacle is a real thing, also clearly established.

I purchased the Tribeca at Home just to watch this film. My friend needs captions. She is very interested int he subject but cannot enjoy it because there are no captions. How absurd is that? By the way, none of the films I have checked so far is captioned, including a film about a deaf person. It is ridiculous. The ADA is over 30 years old and disabled people still need to remind non-disabled people that they exist and like movies?

Trans people have the same right to play sports as anybody else. “For the past nine years,” explains Carroll, “transgender athletes have been able to compete on teams at NCAA member collegiates and universities consistent with their gender identity like all other student-athletes with no disruption to women’s collegiate sports.” Excluding trans people from any space or activity is harmful, particularly for trans youth. A trans high school student, for example, may experience detrimental effects to their physical and emotional wellbeing when they are pushed out of affirming spaces and communities. As Lindsay Hecox says, “I just want to run.” According to Dr. Adkins, “When a school or athletic organization denies transgender students the ability to participate equally in athletics because they are transgender, that condones, reinforces, and affirms the transgender students’ social status as outsiders or misfits who deserve the hostility they experience from peers.” Believing and perpetuating myths and misconceptions about trans athletes is harmful. Denying trans people the right to participate is discrimination and it doesn’t just hurt trans people, it hurts all of us.
