Blessings, Catherine! Wonderful question. Because I believe strongly in what the late Archbishop of Chicago once said, "Following Christ is not following the Left or the Right. It is following the truth. Neither mainstream Party fully aligns with Catholic teaching, although the GOP comes much closer on the moral issues (which take priority). Catholic teaching is traditional on moral issues, but more progressive on foreign policy and economic issues (both communism AND capitalism receive criticisms from the Popes, who encouraged a third-way economic philosophy known as distributism). But, certainly, the moral issues of human life and identity take priority, so the GOP these days is closer to Catholic teaching, even though not perfectly aligned. God bless you!
