Unsurprisingly, we see little to no self-awareness, let alone contrition on Klein's part for this lamentable social shift. The Democratic Party is at its most formidable when it's unapologetically populist. Centre-right "very serious people" have been the downfall of it and its private sector allies.

To aspire toward virtue, clear thinking, toward becoming a worthy human-being, requires thoughtfulness, persistence, concentration, hard work -- in any historical period but especially now. To read these comments, some of deep appreciation and others of dismissal, suggests that thoughtfulness is not a genetically given but requires nurture -- from parents, teachers and predominantly from oneself. Sometimes difficult but a worthy undertaking. Thanks to all who engage in this work.

@@valk5045 Sure. Kamala said on The View: "I am not Joe Biden" and "I'm especially not Donald Trump". Barack Obama said " Black men must vote for the Black women, if they don't he's got a problem with that". Democrats say: Everybody not voting for Kamala Harris is a racist and misogynistic. When you think about it: compelling messages at a time people care about an immigration crisis and food prices ... I think Democrats should run similar messages next time around. This is "win-win" as said before....

not sure about these two specifically but certainly progressives in general have largely adopted this frame of reference in order to cope with how unpopular the idea of biological men in women's sports really is amongst the public that is something like "no one actually cares about this issue, the republicans only care to the extent they use the issue as a political wedge". they don't realize that they literally throw their precious protected class under the bus every time they articulate it because it's dependent on invalidating them lol

Anything actually controversial is hidden behind empty sound bits like "Trans rights are human rights; Protect trans kids" and calling the other person a bigot. My counter attack against that is "Rights to do exactly what? Biological men competing against biological women? Schools transitioning children without parental consent or knowledge? Persecuting people for not using a pronoun? Putting adult entertainers (drag queens) in libraries?" The red herrings stop working. And they always say "immigrants" and NEVER "illegal immigrants", to not acknowledge they are actually in favor of illegal immigration (motte and bailey tactic)

I think you're totally right about that. When I listen to right-wingers now, they're kind-of optimistic, because they mostly just want the (quite achievable) goal of a society where normal people can get a decent job and enjoy their family life. Whereas much of the progressive left has a demoralizing outlook that the world is permanently about to end, and our only hope is to desperately scrabble for a revolution, even though no one individual's action will have much impact.

This is easy to understand; the majority of the electorate are attracted to the negative and will respond to the loudest and the most sensational. Politicians, on both sides, who refuse to wrestle in the mud are being drowned out. This means that all of our politics will eventually become a form of mud wrestling, and the wrestler who can attract the most flies to their brand of stink are going to win. This means the people we most need in politics will never run and the people we least need in politics will take over the stage. Outside of some type of voter qualification test or assessment, I really don't see how we combat this. The days of benevolent politicians, who truly have the best interest of their fellow citizens at heart, seem to be over.

My shift took years! I worked for WA senate dems and believed everything I was told. It took challenging many assumptions because the reality in front of me could not sustain them. Until folks look at their assumptions and beliefs they will continue in them. Dems are the party of ant-intellectuals. They refuse to talk to people who don’t think like themselves. They refuse to debate, never extend charity to their opponents argument, never ponder their own blind-spots. And have rejected objectivity and truth for feelings and lived experience. You cannot make policy for a country from subjective experiences of a few. Oh, and they assume that the 2% of loud activists (who make $$ off thes ideas) honestly and accurately represent the needs and desires of the minority group they speak for instead of asking the group directly. Any BIPOC who doesn’t think like me is wrong vs, maybe the person motivated by self-righteousness and $$ is lying?! Activists are a cancer now. They do more harm than good.

stimulating conversation. i am not sure they clearly explained why negative attention worked for Trump but not for Kari Lake, etc
@jordandaniel8510
@jordandaniel8510 13 күн бұрын
Interesting observation, if I had to guess I'd guess a few reasons: 1) The messenger. Kari Lake does not have the same ability to sway her supporters the way Trump can. I think we've seen this with the rotating cast of orbiters around Trump, they are an accessory to his social and political capital, but also easy to replace. 2) Acting as if the election was stolen. With Lake, I always got the sense that while she *said* the "right" things rhetorically that would signal that the election was stolen, she never carried out requisite actions in practice. Mirror this to Trump, who acted as if he truly did believe the election was stolen. The false slates of electors, calling Raffensperger, filing 63 court cases, Jan 6th, planning to break the ECA, asking Barr/DOJ to send fake letters to the swing states. 3) Locality. In a paradoxical way, it is far easier as a bad actor to point to "fraud" even if there is no fraud when you have more targets to point to. That's why there were 63 court cases. Thats why there were so many claims of where fraud was perpetrated. Lake had far fewer targets she could levy, and therefore, her claims had to be more specific and targeted, making them easier to rebuke.

Ezra, thank you for your great work, your podcasts help preserve my sanity. I personally am searching for a strategy to navigate the next four years. Your podcasts have been spot on throughout this process so far. We all understand the very complex dynamics that lead to a re-election of a convicted felon grifter. I just am a bit less optimistic about the future of our country, as I believe very few people are aware of what you and Chris Hayes discuss here. I have been thinking about this often since I read this when it was published "Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media" by Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky. If you read this comments you may find it amusing that this book was recommended to me late night in a recording studio by George Clinton. TY for your great work! I look forward to more bits of reason and sanity from you, and also thank you for replacing the podcasts theme music. We all needed something a bit more soothing in these times :)

Love this discussion vector, but too much credit is given to Trump regarding winning attention. I believe there is an army of producers who decide which candidate they support, then they become the real attention getters for the masses who listen to them, such as Rogan. one of the biggest problems with mainstream news is it has somehow turned into single topic programming 24/7. it always revolves around politics. and it is always sensational. people are exhausted and bored with the sensational, doom-and-gloom nonsense, and quite honestly they see most of it for what it is: sheer propoganda. Mainstream news would do well to cover other topics such as science, technology, etc more often.

I know some people argue that “like,” as currently used by many, is a legitimate evolution of language. Maybe it is. Perhaps you enjoy your use of “like” and think it enhances communication.
