Yeah! He's a fantastic governor and in one of the reddest states in the country. He's a bit untested nationally still, but he was a top contender for Kamala Harris's VP pick, he was the former KY Attorny General, and he's won 2 very competitive terms for governor. He's shown he can work across the aisle and get things done in stalled government (KY legislature is very red and blocks a lot of things).Personality-wise, he has largely the same appeal as Tim Walz in being just a normal guy with a lot of compassion for his people and thats reflected in his policies. Also not for nothing but he's been on a lot of the Sunday shows for interviews, especially during the last election cycle. And he wrote a really smart op-ed that (not to wade into the debate about 2 months after it was helpful though still relevant), but what I took from it wasn't that "Kamala did all those things and still lost" but "Dems don't need to learn the wrong lessons from this loss", ie not throwing trans kids (or other groups) under the bus and running on good economic messages.

@@kl-1447 Have to ask, what does "untested nationally" really mean? Because our winning candidates for the last 100 years were overwhelmingly untested nationally. FDR, Carter, Clinton, and Obama were all untested--JFK is the only one with significant national experience. If anything, the criteria we Dems use to evaluate candidate readiness makes them less likely to win elections.
@kl-14473 күн бұрын
@shinnyshin7792 I get what you're saying. What I meant was that his experience is still quite Kentucky-specific, which while being the governor (and AG previously) obviously puts him on the national stage, it's not comparative to something such as Congress or a cabinet position. Very different experience, and imo gives him a really good place to jump off from if he wants to run, since he's won in a very red state and is still a "Washington outsider." And I think he definitely got another look when the VP decision came up, they didn't seem to have much opposition research to level at him, and he's got a solid record. The only other thing I'd add to the Ky-specific thing is that he had a lot of pull in his first run as governor because his family is prominent in KY politics; his dad Steve Beshear being the previous popular governor and running against Matt Bevin who was truly despicable. He ran a fantastic campaign for his first term but there were some additional factors at play (though I would argue those didn't have as much effect as people think, he really did run a great campaign). I didn't mean it to be demeaning or reduce his standing as a politician. And you're totally right in saying we/Dems need to reevaluate the criteria for candidates we think can win (as Dan said in an interview, no one would have said Barack Obama would have been The Candidate to win after 2000).

@Marvelerence yes she expressed her proposals but I don't think they were repeated enough. She also only had 100 days to repeat them and Trump has been campaigning for 10 years. In those 10 years he has been pretty scary, so I get how hard it is not to make, "Trump is bad" the loudest voice. I did it myself! But in the end I suppose minds were long made up about him, so it had to be about what she would do to address people's concerns. I think it was a combination of as you said, the proposals not being enough but also not communicating them enough. I didn't even know some of these bills that Biden had passed and I follow politics pretty closely. In general it seems to me they do have a communication problem just in general in getting their message out loudly. They were up against the loudest in your face candidate in years, again who has been basically campaigning for 10 years! Changing the whole approach to staying on message and ignoring the other side, I think would be so refreshing. @@gerrigarrick I agree with your point of focusing on your own message, but Democrats are going to use Trump's next term as another opportunity to bash him and sneak in some extra votes that way, because to be honest, if they actually had very strong policies to sell, they would have done it. They try to hide the fact that their donors prevent them from instituting working-class centric policies by using Trump as a distraction. Unfortunately, it has worked in the past but I hope it doesn't work in their favor anymore because that'll force them to change. I know Biden's policies, and while they were better than say, Obama's policies overall, it is clearly not enough for the people at the moment. I make 6 figures and would be considered a high income earner for my age, but I definitely face problems with unexpected healthcare costs and my grad school degree cost me 120,000 dollars which I am still paying back. There is no appealing to both sides. That is the mistake that we just made. Most Republicans didn't like Trump. It doesn't matter, they won't vote Democrat because they are raised with the idea that we are immoral sinners. I have always lived in deep red areas my entire life. They put up with me because I am female and reasonably pretty. I have been able to cajole a couple of long-term partners into learning about Democrat policies and even heard them admit that our policies are better...but it doesn't matter, I have NEVER convinced even one of them not to vote Republican. It is like they are compelled to vote GOP. It is a cult. We have to concentrate on pleasing as many of our people as we can and that means moving further left NOT further right. We will never win Republicans.

The three big problems with Buttigieg is 1 that he's perceived to be a nepo corporate Dem just because he's had success in the party, but he's anything but - relatively normal background, fairly progressive policies. But too many Progressives like to hate on him (with just a whiff of homophobia). 2. Despite being one of very few national politicians who has actually worked on issues of racial tension he's got a reputation for handling race relations badly. 3. There's undoubtedly a certain number of registered Democrats and Independents who would never vote for a gay man and that number will be a lot higher after 4 years of demonization of LGBT people by the Trump administration
@shinnyshin77923 күн бұрын
@@peterjermey7235 The other issue is that Buttigieg's big draw in 2020 was that he was a Midwesterner who spoke like a (very smart) regular person and wasn't at all a Washington establishment insider. This exactly. We keep overvaluing where the candidate sits on the political spectrum. Also, they can't be perceived as a Washington insider because they need to be able to run on anti-establishment grievances. Well, Brian, in spite of your proclamation, that "no winner" shall be named for this particular Liberal Tiers, I am here to proclaim, that I feel strongly, that Tommy is indeed THE Winner, and hopefully, I will not be silenced!!! And the main reason Tommy wins, is totally, AOC, AND his work out video and costume there in, AND The Game Must Go On! We are indeed, entertained and humored, thanks guys, Happy New Year and Big Thanks for the Joy that comes with Liberal Tiers. It's all Fun AND Funny!!! A true Blessing for myself indeed! Bright Blessings to You and Yours, Brian and Tommy, All the Best, Heading into the New Year ahead!🙏✌💓😂🖖

@@HaagentheDazsI had high hopes for Corbyn but he proved an ineffective ditherer who accomplished very little except branding the British left as anti semitic. I think he's generally a good man who just isn't up to anything beyond backbencher. Somewhat ironically without the anti semitism of the British media against Ed Milliband we might have had a very different 21st century.

My senator The Great Rev. Warnock is an excellent candidate. I would also support Jon Ossoff. They are both real stand up public servents. They are against corruption, aggressively. Great orators and new politicians in their first terms so they can run as outsiders.

I would loved to have seen a woman for president. In Denmark we have our second female prime minister. But I honestly don’t think the Americans are ready to see a female in office……. The US is still to sexist to let a female run the office. And Pete B is such a great and amazing politician…… but a gay man in office…… I don’t think tha US is ready for it. I’m gay, so I don’t have anything against LGBT+ people running for office. It should only be your work as a politician you are judged for and not who you love… But I honestly think the American people would focus to much on the fact who Pete is married to….. sadly enough But Gavin Newsom has a chance and I would believe a very big and good chance to become the next president 💙💙

It's like absolutely nothing was learned at all. It's gotta be purposefully at this point. "Once is happenstance (2016), twice is coincidence (2024), three times and assume it's enemy action (potentially 2028)"

I really hope Dems choose someone who excites them and not just whomever seems like the pick least likely to ruffle feathers. Excitement wins people over on social media. Excitement gets people to the polls. The electorate is changing and Dems can either pick someone who drives that change or they can pick the "Same Old, Same Old" and watch the population change around them, likely to their detriment.

I'm such a Buttigieg Stan but he needs to be a super populist. He just smells like elite to me. There will still be lots of pushback against a gay president with his husband and 2 adopted kids.
@shinnyshin77923 күн бұрын
Who's also been a Washington insider in the Biden cabinet the last 4 years. Buttigieg was my favorite 2020 candidate (favorite, not most electable), but so much of his shine came from his Midwestern, not-a-Washington-insider, talks like a (very smart) regular person charm. 4 years as a bureaucrat in one of the least popular presidential administrations ever has likely left him less electable than in 2020, not more. He needs to win a Midwestern governor position ASAP if he wants to be remotely viable.

I think Whitmer should've gone higher, she was clearly waiting in the wings when Biden was spiraling. Kamala may have been poorly set up but she didn't catch on in 2020, lost in 2024, and a very talented field of speakers won't make things any easier, she should pivot to Governor.
