That "Claw" thing is more effective than the Ball.

This is fascinating! I've never seen a clamshell used for demolition before. I would not have thought it strong enough to bite and break concrete as it operated by wires not hydraulics. The operator is clearly more skilled with this than he was with the wrecking ball!!

I've seen clamshells used for demolition since i was four.

Because the cable runs through four pulleys, if the main drum winch on the crane had a pull of 10 tons that would equate to 40 tons at the jaws. You'd lose some power through friction and the distance of jaws from the pivot point but still a powerful force which the operator was using very effectively.

@Stormtrooper1488 The Clamshell is effective for brick/wood and more controlled than using the wrecking ball.
@peon92824 жыл бұрын
@Stormtrooper1488 Of course there‘s nothing better than using an excavator with quick coupler and the right attachments. But up to the 80s, there were no demolition excavators and concrete crushers or sorting grabs didn‘t even exist. So they improvised and used track loaders or even truck based gradall excavators for smaller buildings. And of course the wrecking ball for big and small buildings. But I‘ve seen many old photos where the used a clamshell (photos from Germany and Switzerland)

@Stormtrooper1488 I never said it was the right tool for this job (concrete floors). But at 3:05 you can see that it works well with brick walls... We’ll never know why they changed to the clamshell, but there must have been a reason. My guess would be, that they used it to work more controlled because there wasn‘t enough distance to surrounding buildings/the street etc. But then a normal excavator would have been a better choice anyways.

Simple Bullet Proof technology that will literally last a life time, that crane will be 25 to 35 years old maybe older and will still be working in another 15 years time and after a High Reach Excavator costing £300,000 + will be in the scrap yard, HAVE we Progressed ????

well there are a shortage of skilled crane operators out there, let alone ones that can do demolition, you might think its easy but its not as easy as you think there is an art to it, and it takes a special type of crane opperator to do it the excavator though is easier to train on, can sort stuff as you are pulling it down, and can use differant attachments for differant things.

For that old buildings downtown explosives would be more expensive and as you said - to riskky. Demolition by crane is efficient and cheaper.

Nothing beats the old friction crane magnet clamshell ball whatever these are the best technology has made operators lazy and dumb with no skills hydraulics are for non skilled operators

@gregg41647 жыл бұрын
I think it would have been faster if they left the ball on it instead of going back to the clam shell.
@arischwartz14507 жыл бұрын
Wrecking balls are no longer used, because the crane could topple.
