It's been a work in progress, but the Beach Plaza Hotel is finally being torn down. The Demolition happened a short time ago with the apartments next door and have now moved on to the Beach Plaza Hotel. These things are both sad but also exciting to see what will replace it. At this time (1/29/25) there are no plans submitted to rebuild anything.
Thanks for watching.

It is so sad to watch Ocean City’s history disappear. My great grandparents home is now a parking lot on North Division Street. Now Tony’s is gone too. So many memories. I know we need to leave room for the new generations of families but it sad as we get older we only have the memories. Thank you for sharing

I'll be 68 this year and in that time, between coming here and living here full time I have learned one thing. They have no problem tearing down something building a new place then a few years later tearing down again and start over. Nice video Jay.

That's so sad to see. Many years ago, when I was an OC Insider, Phillips hosted us with cocktail hour and hotel tour. They had recently remodeled and it was in the Spring before they reopened for the season. What a gorgeous hotel. Not new and modern, but preserved and nostalgic. You could almost see the women walking around in floor length dresses and wool swimsuits and caps on their heads. The rooms weren't large by any means, but they were clean and perfect for people who wanted to be on the beach and not spend a fortune. Another sad reminder that time marches on, and leaves only memories behind. Thanks for the video Jay.

I’ve been vacationing in OCMD for over 20 years now I’ve seen hotels come go, ones I’ve never stayed at but, kinda sad.. now it will just be a memory walking down the boardwalk n not seeing that hotel. Even when it was not longer opened. I remember years back there would always be a ski group that would stay there every year n they have skis out or other equipment out during there stay(at the apartments), they’d fasten skis to the white fence … great video Jay thanks for sharing

I was there yesterday in that exact spot where you started the video. No work going on. May have been too windy. My wife and I never stayed there, but did have many a breakfast and dinner there. I remember their Ginger Bread house at Christmas time. We got to meet the Brice’s while having breakfast many years ago. We were just saying what a wonderful place it was. Thanks, Jay.

Expensive piece of real estate right there!! We kinda checked out the place last September when we stayed in the " Cabana " rooms at the Commander. It was still intact then, but overgrown and fenced off. Yet another end of an era. I definitely miss the Phillips buffet. OCMD is still one of our favorite beaches, but it's sad to see things go, even if they had to. I wonder if you or anyone remembers Shantytown, just on the other side of the Rte 50 bridge?? It was a bunch of shops, marina and paid fishing spot....I think it was like 50 cent or a buck to fish there....I'm glad I got to experience it, the Phillips buffet, and sitting on the roof deck eating pizza overlooking the boardwalk. Thanks for the video and old pics. My view will be much better this year if we stay at the Commander again.

I definitely is the end of a era. Hard to believe the amount of real estate the Phillips owned. And to think there is restaurant left, but not owned by them anymore. I do remember shanty town! I remember the very tale end of it before the houses were built. My wife remembers it from many years ago.

@ReelJayB that is correct!. Lots of maintenance issues. Bad smells. Furniture in bad shape. Comforters and blankets were a "throwback". They were insistent on taking our towels and then didn't have new ones. We stayed there in 2020.

When I was a kid, every OC vacation used to include walking down to Phillip's for the breakfast buffet (We usually stayed in The Lankford). It was always so good. I remember my cousin wandering away & coming back with an entire plate of bacon. Haha We have some family photos next to those lion sculptures that used to be on the hotel porch. We stayed in the apartments once. They had a cozy, beach cottage vibe. I really liked them. Definitely will miss it, lots of family vacation memories!

I worked at the Phillips Crab House during the summer of 1979. One my assignments in early June - when the restaurant was still slow - was to meet my supervisor at the back of the Bo-Con Apartments in the AM. The place actually had a basement, and we (a couple of other guys got the same assignment) cleaned some of it out that summer morning. Nothing of note, old beds and mattresses etc. We were on the the clock, but another "reward" for doing the job came when we finished. There were two old wooden hotels on the lots directly behind the Bo-Con/Beach Plaza site. One was the Broadripple, which mostly housed seasonal Phillips employees (the hallways definitely had Shining vibes...). I don't remember the name of the other, and don't think anybody was in it. But it had been a place where seasonal employees stayed. Our supervisor took us up to the abanonded "penthouse" where he'd spent a couple summers living while working at Phillips. It was a cozy 2 bedroom place with a balcony/deck and a stunning view of the boardwalk and the ocean (and the back of the Beach Plaza). We shared a 6-pack of Natty Boh up there in the afternoon sunshine as he reminisced. A memory I treasure from a totally different time.

I never stayed at the hotel. But I do remember going to that little bar at the Beach Plaza. It was always a good time. So sad to see the Beach Plaza go. I'm sure some corporate hotel will eventually buy the property.
@ReelJayB
@ReelJayB 8 күн бұрын
As much as I don't want a corporate hotel, it seems inevitable. The mom and pop hotels are getting too expensive to operate. I just hope the town does a good job determining what can and can't take it's place.

what happened to the plan for the new hotel? I heard there was a fighting over the alley way. I also heard the plan was moving forward, but scaled down. What is the latest?
@ReelJayB
@ReelJayB 6 күн бұрын
The developers scaled down the size of the hotel so Margaritaville said they couldn't use the name anymore. After that they halted the project. As of now there's no plans for anything to be built.

There was probably a good argument for renovating vs. demolition but I'm sure a nice new modern hotel on the site will add, not take away from, the area.

In vaca spots like OCMD, buildings eventually get replaced because tourists tend to like shiny, new things. If more hotels were built like European castles (admittedly a darned expensive idea!), they would last a lot longer.
@ReelJayB
@ReelJayB 4 күн бұрын
Something else to consider is building codes in the 70s are way different than today. This hotel was pretty old and wouldnprobably cost too much to renovate it.

Very nice drone footage! I know "progress" is what it is. But I hate to see the old places go. It's not uncommon though for 3rd and 4th generations to cash out on what took their family decades to build. I really enjoyed Scott Lenox interview the other day of the owner of Fishtales and finding out they have owned it since the 70's.

There was a vid posted on YT by a guy who sneaked (ok, trespassed) into the Beach Plaza about six months ago. The interior shots did not look like the old photos of the interior in your video, lol. TBH, there was no redeeming value to the property architecturally - it was just a box - and the structure could not be renovated into something that modern vacationers want in resort hotel properties, wit Aloft, the Hyatt, Blu, the Marriotts, etc.
@ReelJayB
@ReelJayB 5 күн бұрын
I saw that same video! Pretty crazy to see him sneak in! I agree, the structure was beyond renovation, it was in pretty bad shape the last few years it was open.
