These old PASGT helmets were rated IIIA, for shrapnel and balistic threats along the line of pistol calibers (out of an actual pistol) and explosive frag. Considering these old GWOT surplus helmets are Kevlar and Aramid with expiration dates to boot, I'd say the helmets held up pretty well.

New helmets stop 7.62s (it will still leave your head ringing, probably a concussion too), old ones will stop them from a distance (again, concussion). Small arms, shrapnel (when reasonable), and other crap will also get stopped though. Not sure about 5.56.

Yes ACH is only IIIA rated, new ones from opscore are a little heavier and way more expensive can do rifle rounds now. Now if it's a deflection, graze or from very long distance where the energy and velocity have greatly diminished, it may save you but mostly the helmet was there for shrapnel as most have pointed out and/or head injuries of going through tight space in vehicles etc.

Chandler Mooney Matt would never do that. If you show how many guns and let’s say ammo you have at your house the ATF will find out and make a visit. To be fair its not a good objective test to hit the same helmet repeatedly on the same side. After 1 shot its already severely compromised. I run a military surplus store and I get helmets like this. I'd gladly sacrifice a half-dozen for some proper objective tests, and maybe a shoutout to my Facebook page :).

Jason Alen most modern helmets are made from Kevlar as he states in the video. I do get in some older steel helmets but the majority are what you'd call "PASGT" helmets, these were used from the 80s until around the early 2000s.

To be fair, he's shooting from really close and doing head-on hits. A lot of hits to the head in combat ard from much farther out and glancing, so there's usually a better chance for the bullet to get stopped/redirected away. Still best to not be hit, though...

The modern ECH would have stopped everything except the 45-70 because of course no helmet manufacturer does a ballistic test against a 305gr solid brass bullet from 25 meters because that is bonkers.

Just passed my 29th anniversary in the Army. The helmet you are testing is a PASGT, a.k.a. a "Kevlar". I have watched with both curiosity and skepticism as the Army has changed between three different helmets (four?) that I have personally been issued and worn. In the 1980s I had a "Steel Pot" that looked much like (as in exactly) what you see in WWII thru Vietnam movies (you can cook, dig, and do a variety of other tasks with it). In the 1990's and early 2000's I had a PASGT, plus a variety of body armor from a "Flak Vest" to a "Interceptor", and eventually an OTV. In more recent years I've had an Advanced Combat Helmet (ACH) and an IOTV. Most recently (including this morning) I wore an ACH and a plate-carrier. Plates are the Army issue...and sometimes CATI AR500's that I bought. By chance I am shipping out for the middle east shortly. So, I have a request. Can you contrast these helmets (steel pot, PASGT, ACH) against their "usual adversary" rounds? The most common adversary rounds I have encountered are AK-47 (7.62x39), AK-74 (5.45x39), 7.62 x 54 57-N-323S ball, 7.62 x 54 7BZ3 AP, 5.56 NATO, M80 7.62x51 NATO "ball", M61 7.62x51 NATO AP, 30-06 Springfield M1 Ball, 30-06 Springfield M2 AP...and I guess 9mm tokarev, .45 acp, 9mmx25 "Tokarev", and 9mm x 19 "parabellum".

Helmets are not designed to stop bullets, they're designed to keep you from hitting your head on something or from something hitting your head. One of the basic tests every new cartridge goes through is to see if it can penetrate a standard issue helmet. Most of the pictures you'll see online of helmets stopping bullets are glancing blows or pistol calibers, you'll be lucky to get away with brain trauma in most instances.

Fun fact: had a soldier come into the CSH in '05 after he had been shot in the head by an AK. The round went in the front of the helmet, skimmed the circumference, and exited out the back. Never touched the soldier.

Have you tried not shooting the same spot? Idk maybe after 3 rounds in the same spot, you may have compromised the structural integrity of your target for the rest of the rounds
