I remember seeing this YEARS ago and being absolutely terrified of it happening to me. Let's just say I barely have any Rudolph animatronic toys in my house now.

About as bad as the Speak and Spell that kept me awake with is high pitched, raspy and crackly voice when it's batteries ran low. The display would go WOR[*]'Z,P and the voice would go ELF ELF E E E E E ...and the keys go unresponsive, with no way for me to turn it off except to chuck it across the room causing the child resistant battery cover to pop open and spill it's batteries. The toy worked fine after a fresh set of batteries. Those things were built like tanks. I bet the recent reissue would shatter in a million pieces.

I currently have one of these on the dresser on top of my mirror, it did this also because the chip was malfunctioning, i googled it and it says between the type of batteries you are using or the diode in the chipboard is malfunctioning will cause it. Mine doesn't sing that song but it just says merry Christmas i love you. But i had bought mine at goodwill, for some strange reason when I saw it, it was all i ever wanted in my entire life....... I still don't understand why I got it i was drawn to it as soon as I laid my eyes on it. The low batteries didn’t really scare me much as a kid I always just thought it was really funny. For me it was creepy and funny at the same time. The only thing is the things that I didn’t like where the motion censored toys. Those always scared me. I have one of those singing fishes and the motion sensor got turned on on him by accident and he would just randomly start singing for no reason and it was just so creepy
