i would add so much more level. The game is great but really short. Many power up are quite useless (ex: torando platform or the glue). The only length of that game come from collectothon part. I'm not saying this isn't fun, but it makes the game really short in fact because the length is only based on it. There arn't enough level: in fact there are only 7 levels, the first and the last are a straight line to the end, the five other are just divided in 2 part sharing a begining. Also i'm pretty sure they would fuck up that game if a remake would be made. They would fuck up Firebrand design to make it appears more like what it looks like in MvC3. They would add shitty 3d graphism and remove a part of the gothic feeling, exactly how they did when they tried to port Megaman X on PSP. I'm quite sure this game wouldn't be improved. Lucky for us, this game didn't sold well so nobody at capcom would ever think about it :)

i strange trick i figured out: if you die and continue, you get to keep any items you found. i like to take advantage of that to collect the items underwater at 5:12 and 5:20.

It works indeed but it is a little bit slower. In newer runs, we actually collect the Hand talisman in the first visit of Town (the item at 5:20) without dying, which is tough but doable. It helps speed up the bosses a little ;)

This is one of my favorite game series from when I was a kid. I was never able to get 100% I always got something like 90% a would typically miss a single life point. I played all of the series and the gameboy version was the hardest one where you played as firebrand. This was mostly because of problems with the switching of the powers.

I don’t know how this game slipped past me. It’s fantastic! However, I didn’t know I was facing the final boss. I only had 1 stone, and hardly any items. Was pretty disappointed because I’m pretty sure I missed out on 3/4 of the game.

Yes, it's a bummer but if you play the game blind you're likely to get to either the "bad" or the "normal" ending, therefore missing out on some (maybe much) on the game's content.

For the green fire (Buster) you have to beat the eyeball boss (at 6:30). For the flying Gargoyle form you must beat Arma 2 (at 14:40). There you go!

Yes, in the Japanese version, Somulo only takes 3 hits (vs. 6 in the US version). That's the major reason why we pick the Japanese version to speedrun this game. The text parts are also a tiny bit shorter.

No you don't. It often confuses people but Dark Demon is not part of the 100% speedrun since you need a manual console reset to enter the code to get to him. Although, there is another category (called Boss Rush) where you start with the code and have to beat every boss, including Dark Demon.

The 100% route doesn't take into account the Dark Demon because you need to restart the game and enter a password to access him. The Boss Rush category does kill the Dark Demon though.

Thanks for your comment :) It's faster overall (by a few seconds) to kill Grewon with Firebrand so you get Demon Fire early, and you can defeat Arma 3 much faster with it.

It's quite common to get to the "bad" ending on your first casual playthrough. To get to the better endings you need to find most bosses and most of the levels' alternate paths.

Still not understanding how to hit somulo twice at a time. On a casual playthrough I can 100 percent this game without death-cheating in about an hour and a half. Headbutt game is easy sped up or cheated on my opinion but I may be wrong. Seems to perfect and off-timing in certain parts but maybe I'm just jealous as someone who considers myself to have mastered this game watching a true master

For Somulo, he only needs 3 hits in the Japanese version, but 6 in the US version, so that might be the reason. Also, this run is far from perfect! It has been significantly improved now: my PB is 38:32 and WR is 38:18. Strategies have become quite crazy :D

Was a good run for the most part. I can see some mistakes here and there, which makes me feel that a sub 40 time is entirely possible for a human. Good run nonetheless. I'm interested in speedrunning this game int he future. Where do you recommend I start, besides owning the game.

+AllBassPromoter Sure, sub-40 is possible, but all the luck involved makes it very difficult. I would have saved about 30s if I had got the perfect Phalanx 3 kill, which is also hard and inconsistent, at least for me. I would recommend having some savestates for the hard tech tricks such as the two Mercury Cancels (after defeating Belth and Crawler), and most boss fights (Ovnunu, Flame Lord, Grewon and Phalanx 3 especially). But you may want to just learn the route and do runs to begin with. Have fun with this great game!

+LeHulk1 just wondering, but would you say that most, if not all, of the RNG in this run is for the bosses and little minigames? I don't know the game nearly as well as you do, but this is what it seems like to me. Item and enemy placement, as well as drops seem to be fixed, but boss battles and those minigames seem to be fairly random. If I'm mistaken, then let me know what else is very RNG-based. I'm interested.

+AllBassPromoter Yeah, I've had some trouble with Flame Lord because his 2nd phase has really irritating patterns, like the quick swooping and the fire droplets, which do a shit ton of damage and usually catch me off guard. As of now, I can only really beat him with one or two potions. I would practice the game, but my laptop is broken, so I can't really play, which sucks.

Almost all the RNG is in bosses. You might lose some seconds in a few other areas (to enemy behaviour, like in the water part of Atlantis), but every single boss can waste sometimes up to 20s if they want to... Especially the second Arma fight and Crawler.
