A playthrough of Capcom's 1994 horror-themed action-adventure game for the Super Nintendo, Demon's Crest.
Played through on the normal difficulty level. The good ending is shown, and after the credits roll, I reset the game, use the final password, and take on the hidden final boss for the "true" ending.
Demon's Crest is the third and final installment in the Gargoyle's Quest trilogy that was spun-off of Capcom's popular Ghosts 'n Goblins series. It follows Gargoyle's Quest (1990 on GB) and Gargoyle's Quest II (1992 on NES, 1993 on GB).
You can find my playthrough the first game here:
• Gargoyle's Quest (Game...
And the second game:
• Gargoyle's Quest II (N...
Firebrand's third adventure begins with his killing of a zombie dragon in order to escape from a Demon Realm prison. The demon Phalanx attacked Firebrand sometime following the events of GQ2, stole his elemental crests, and imprisoned him. The crests granted Phalanx enough power to take over the entire Demon Realm, and Firebrand is pissed.
Demon's Crest was an atypical title in its day - its resembles a mix of Super Metroid, Mega Man X, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. The overhead JRPG segments from the earlier games have been scrapped in favor of a single world hub map, dialogues with NPCs now take place within the action scenes themselves, and the game flows more naturally with fewer jarring transitions than its predecessors as a result.
The core gameplay will instantly feel familiar to anyone that has played a GQ game, and the controls are responsive and surprisingly nuanced - far more so than in the earlier games. The level structure has also gone through some radical changes. Though there are only seven total stages, you'll revisit them multiple times over the course of the game: Firebrand is constantly learning new forms and techniques, and there are many obstacles that require a specific skill to get past. The new paths that open up with these abilities greatly expand on the already large stages, and all of the best stuff is typically hidden in these areas. If you want the best ending you'll need to find all of Firebrand's upgrades, you'll need to explore thoroughly to make sure you don't miss anything.
The Demon Realm and its inhabitants paint some gorgeous spectacles on the SNES. As dark, morbid, and oppressive as the visuals tend to be, they look almost like animated paintings at times - the attention to detail is stellar. The same can be said for the soundtrack. It never attempts to sound like Castlevania as you might expect - it's loaded with dark symphonic flourishes and an ambience that is unmatched on the system, and the quality of the compositions make them well worth listening to even outside of the game. In my opinion, it's one of the best soundtracks on the SNES.
The gameplay, though, is Demon's Crest's trump card. The versatility of Firebrand's move set, the thoughtful level design, and a difficulty level that's stiff without being punishing all make it an absolute pleasure to play.
Despite being all but ignored when it was first released, Demon's Crest is one of the crowning achievements of the SNES library, and it's one of the best titles Capcom has ever made.
It's dark, it's beautiful, and it's endlessly entertaining. I really can't say enough good things about Demon's Crest, but I really don't have to. Just play it for five minutes: the quality speaks for itself.
But does anyone else find it amusing how closely the ending resembles Mega Man X's?

@NintendoComplete I wonder if Capcom will ever release another game that takes place after Demon's Crest? Considering that some of the endings pointed out as potential cliffhangers where a sequel was intended only for one to not take place? I know the game didn't sell well but its still one of those rare gems worth looking into.
@NintendoComplete

@@ancientone5903 I'm not sure. I'd love to see a new game, but who knows? They never touched the series again after they released this. The Maximo games were pretty good, but they're more follow-ups to the GnG games than they are to the GQ games.
@ancientone5903
@ancientone5903 6 жыл бұрын
@NintendoComplete Oh Gosh, and Maximo is also another series that also remains unfinished to this day as a 3rd game was suppose to come out but never did due to the lower then expected sales of Maximo vs. The Army of Zin. Heak I could also think of games that also deserve sequels as well, Wizards & Warriors is one of those games since a 4th game (well technically 5th if you count The Fortress of Fear) was suppose to be released as it takes place after Kuros: Visions of Power but never did due to Zippo Games closing for good, whatever Rare decides to revisit Wizards & Warriors again remains to be seen (in fact, they need to). Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance III is another game that was suppose to be released but also never did due to Black Isle Studios having legal issues as Interplay went bankrupt, I hope someone manages to pick up where they left off at some point because some games deserved to have the rest of their respectful stories be brought. I don't know if you played Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance and it's sequel before but they are "troves of fun" for obvious reasons. Final Fight 4, "now this needs to happen" due to Streets of Rage 4 already being announced for one big reason in particular: Both gaming franchises have a competitive rivalry since the 1990s and Capcom should honor that rivalry by releasing Final Fight 4 (yes, they also need to make it so Mike Haggar is pile diving gangsters and criminals right through concrete and steel like he did with the wrestlers as seen in Ring of Destruction: Slam Masters II). We could bring up more ideal sequels that should be worth bringing up but the list would be long, at least people who look at this post would realize what we are speaking about.

Funny thing, the zombie dragon was one of Firebrands' biggest rivals over the crests and was the holder of a few of them before getting killed before the game started. Kind of a full-circle moment when you get to fight him again after getting jumped and losing the crests to someone else.

Seriously. Capcom could do Street Fighter and Final Fight perfect for this era. But they can't have the same responsiveness for this game. I remember having this game for 2 weeks as a 6 year old kid and I was stuck in that first boss. I begged my friend from school's older brother to come over to help me beat this boss. I really can't think of a better SNES game than this aside from Zelda ALttP and the DKC games. With just few pixels they managed to create a game with unique style and atmosphere. It feels so magical and dark at the same, so solemn yet so blasphemous, so full yet so empty, it's unreal. The music is so grand you really feel like you are playing a part in an ancient legend of demons and monsters. The game is super short, yey through the atmosphere and the gameplay you still fill like you are living an epic adventure. The design of the game, the characters, the levels, the story, are really simple and old school, but in a good sense. It shows that you don't need to make things too complicated to create a masterpiece. It's really one of the best games I've ever had the honour to play.

This is one of the most beautiful Snes games ever made. It's a shame it never really released on anything else (that I'm aware of). I love that classic Capcom logo and jingle it just screams Street Fighter II. Addendum- Capcom has spent an inordinate amount of time and money keeping all of their old franchises alive. We got the Street Fighter collection (several variations), Street Fighter 2 Hyper Fighting re-release, Mega Man Collection, Mega Man X Collection, Strider arcade re-release (also Genesis Mini), Strider II arcade re-release, a brand new Strider, Ghouls n' Ghosts Compilations (several), a new Ghosts & Goblins, they kept Bionic Commando alive, and are still making new Mega Man games right now. Yet, they have failed time and time again to give us a remake/remaster/re-release of any of the Demon Crest games (or Mega Man Legends but who's counting)...make with the game Capcom or I'm coming over there.

I hadn't followed the channel for a while and I'm flad to see it's still going strong. I never 100% completed this game, even if I knew there was more (you can even finish it without ever getting to water areas). What I didn't know is that it was so unsuccessful; the gameplay that requires more patience and mastery (Firebrand can feel very stiff to control, especially before you get some abilities) compared to more immediate titles like DKC, released around the same time, may have been a factor. Damn shame, who knows how a fourth outing built on everything good Demon's Crest has, on PS1, may have been. If anything, it could have used the extra controller buttons for some rapid fire and crest switching instead of having to constantly pause and enter the menu - as it is, it's the most inconvenient part of the game, as some sections require frequent back and forth between various forms and abilities. There are some uses of the word "death(like one of the spells) and one of the enemies comes out from irons maidens that bleed a little before opening. Were Nintendo of America already relaxing their censorship policies, following the release of Mortal Kombat II?

This game had a rough launch. When it first came out, a group of devoutly religious people bought the game in mass only to return it to "prove a point", causing the game to actually suffer from negative sales on release. I'm glad Nintendo released it on their virtual console for the 3ds and the Switch to give this game the chance to shine that it deserved. My one gripe for the game is that it can be really hard to miss hidden items, which you have to collect all of them to get the true ending to the game, and unless you talk to specific npcs, you have no way of knowing about their existence if you go into the game blind.

Those were on 8 bit consoles, this game is on a 16 bit console, which is more powerful, so developers had ways of making the atmosphere creepier, and the game darker overall. Though to be honest, the 8 bit games have a vibe to them that seems a little different from these games, as the RPG like elements in the original 2 games did not carry over to this straight action game. All 3 games are pretty difficult though, something all 3 games share in common.

Now I get why Firebrand was a playable character in MvC series. Capcom tend forget to make "more" sequels for some of there older classics.

I know, seriously. How have they not revisited it? Have you seen him in SNK vs. Capcom on the Neo Geo? He looks badass drawn in the SNK art style.

Well, I found it and I agree they made him less pterodactyl-ish and more demon-esque. Also found something while searching when you said badass. XD www.flickr.com/photos/terrible2z/2402643907 It's Red Arremer/Firebrand's butt, ha.

Someone either needs to revive this franchise or make a kickstarter page to create an hommage to this series much like Bloodstained was to SOTN...

This was one I missed back in the day (I was too wrapped up in RPGs on both the SNES and Genesis during this time), so a few years ago I fired up the ol' emulator and gave it a go (damn if the cart isn't expensive). I enjoyed it quite a bit. The quality is right in line with Capcom's offerings of this time. Really good stuff.

It can't be a coincidence that Capcom slowly teetered off a cliff when Tokuro Fujiwara left the company; their output had a few moments of glory, but there was no true dashes of creativity and whimsy from then on. Sort like id software when Romero was gone; the heart was cut out.

So, an old issue of Nintendo Power claims that this game sold so poorly that it had negative sales one week - more people returned the game than bought it. That's sounds pretty ludicrous but maybe not totally surprising if you look at how the game is designed. You can beat this game SUPER quickly. I think you can challenge the final boss by the time you beat the 3rd or 4th level. He's not too hard to beat at this point either (in story I think it's because like you, he's still building up his power). While you get a bad ending, there's nothing the explicitly tells you to try again and collect all the items. My guess is that people got this bad ending, figured they had beaten it and returned it. That's just my theory. Even at 100% completion it's a pretty short, albeit awesome game that's worth playing multiple times. It also came out in late 1994, an era which was flooded with quality SNES titles. Not surprised it would get buried while Nintendo was throwing their marketing muscle behind DKC.

I very much want to see a modern 3D Firebrand game in which you kick Arthur and take the girl XD, but yup all Firebrand games were far more atmospheric than arthur games

Remember buying a cart only of this locally years ago, $24.99 at a pawn shop, too good to pass up (ignored Kirby's Dreamland 3 for 10 bucks more though, I have that latter on the Wii Kirby Collection anyway). Because maybe 3 weeks passed, I decided to look up how much the game was going online for, $80 was my answer. I think I literally almost missed the boat on buying this game, but thankfully didn't.
