Someone on the development team must've REALLLYY been into modern cinema because that opening felt like a trailer you'd see in theaters. Only thing it was missing were the cinematic cuts to different scenes with the music syncing with it loudly to build suspense and playing some popular pop culture song in tune with it.

Great video overall, however I would like to point out one mistake about the Second Introduction. It utilizes the concept art images, which can be seen in the Official Art Book of the game. In that original image of the Old One surrounded by the blue phantoms, the gargoyle enemies from Latria are present. (you can confirm this in page 49 of the art book). The Remake simply recreates the scene without much alteration to it. In the Original version, most likely the intention behind the use of the top and bottom black borders / vignette was to focus on the Old One and also obscure the gargoyles as they no longer have a purpose in the scene, however you can still view one in the cinematic, and in this video at @9:36 (standing on the decrepit rock on the right). Aside from that, the analysis of the sound design and musical choice / significance is well covered. The comparison to the Shrek uncanny valley / 'toon'-ified designs of the face models is also very accurate. Thanks for these videos. Really looking forward to the next part.

Thank you for commenting! About the second introduction, i certainly know of the concept art, i'm very familiar with it. I have the art book downloaded in good resolution, and i knew of the gargoyles in the original concept art. However i do think that it was an early use of that design, and i don't think that with the context we get in game it would make sense for the gargoyles of Latria to appear there, and that's why From chose to remove them from the scene as best as they could. It seems that the concept arts had to be utilized for narrative purposes due to budgetary constraints, as every other game directed by Miyazaki has a fully rendered CGI introduction. The only 'gargoyle' we get to see in that cutscene is not moving at all, and there's even a difference present there when comparing to the original concept art; the gargoyle in the original rendition has glowing blue eyes, while the one seen in the cutscene doesn't, it looks to be lifeless. Even though you could say the resolution is at fault for that, i still think it was very much deliberate that the gargoyles were almost entirely cut out of that shot, and that the first demons we get to see in action are the colossal figures fighting in the war. As we know from the game, those gargoyles appear only in Latria, and they were most certainly created by the archdemon Old Monk. As the Maneater Archstone reads: "Masses of flesh litter these hanging prisons. Latria's current master, an old man who is no longer human, has been creating his own demons..." Those gargoyles also drop common souls we'd find in corpses, indicating that they might've been normal humans before their transformation/soul transposing into the statues. Their rapier (Spiral Rapier) reads: "It is meant to inflict pain and cause bleeding rather than deal damage, which provides a glimpse into the insanity of the Old Monk." That directly connects them to the Old Monk, they served as his guards and kidnappers, most likely. The remake however emphasizes the gargoyles as the focal point, they're indeed the first clear representation of the demons we get to see (supposedly unleashed directly by the Old One). I commented that they looked like placeholders, and they do, and with this added context i think it's clear why that is. (not to mention that the way they animated them is pretty awkward.) But of course i can't be 100% sure about any of this. And your correction is on point, since i haven't explained all of this i just said in this comment. I considered pausing the cutscenes in order to add in more information more than once, but i ended up preffering to cover them in real time, it's more dynamic that way. I'm sorry for dealing with that scene clumsily. :´^)
@Galax274 жыл бұрын
@@thefirelinkconspiracy Unfortunately I haven't considered the possibility for the gargoyle in the scene to be just a statue, even though that is indeed a concept in the game. (completely forgot about it for that moment) I agree with the fact that they probably didn't have the funds or time in order to create a more elaborate introduction. My comment's intention was more to point out that it might have been a slight oversight that it is still in the frame, before someone would vehemently discard the point you make entirely. Thanks for the reply and the clarifications. You're doing a great job with these videos.
@thefirelinkconspiracy4 жыл бұрын
@@Galax27 Another small point to be made regarding this subject is that, as you've now considered, that gargoyle appears to be mostly portrayed as a statue, since it's only in the next shot that we get the narrator telling us of the demons being unleashed by the Old One. The Latria gargoyles are entirely absent from that shot, instead it cuts directly into the war scene where we get to see the demons very clearly. If From intended for the gargoyles to indeed be presented to us as the first living demons, the only thing they had to do was not deliberately remove them from that second shot of the Old One entirely, the original concept art had them there already. Oh, and thanks for the kindness! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos.

A relatively subtle change is that the introduction (8:50) has this unusual, old film-like filter on it, at both. This is fairly anachronistic if this is supposed to be a medieval dark fantasy... or is it? Actually, a lot of stories written in the real-life medieval period **also** imply that their stories are set in the distant (yet still medieval) past. To me, this moment is a reflection of that -- the story of Demon's Souls is one that is so futile, already-written, and distant from the player that it just works to present the introduction to the adventure as something already archaic, contained. Boletaria was lost, or saved, a long time ago, and it's still in that loop of being lost or saved, and it will be there forever. The story is in the past forever, even at its beginning, and the old film effect communicates this subtly. You can also see this even more blatantly in the Monumental's cutscene, which is fitting as he is explaining the past. The remake doesn't quite get that. It copies the slight shaking of the camera while looking at the map of Boletaria, but has abandoned the old film effect otherwise, including the Monumental's cutscene. This fits with the remake's overall choice to portray Boletaria as a living, epic, conquerable landscape with you as the virile and powerful hero. The Boletaria in the remake is snappy, immediate, and verdant, contrasting the desolate wasteland it was in the original (and ultimately still is, thanks to Bluepoint's misguided attempt to change the tone of the game and nothing else).

I want to point out something about the big battle scene. So in the original you see armies fighting against three different types of demons, none of which appear in the game as enemies or bosses. But people have data mined the game and they've actually found unfinished models for two of the three demon types. They were supposed to appear in the Northern Limit area which was cut from the game, hence their absence. However in the remake they replaced the three different demon types with one new generic one they invented. I know that it's not the biggest issue the remake has but it always bothered me. One of the few glimpses of the cut area and how it was supposed to be, completely gone for no reason.

I understand they wanted to make the concept art-sourced intro more visually interesting, but I honestly think the """animation""" looks worse than the original's concept art slideshow; its just a still images on separate layers that someone made wiggle around non-specifically; it was nice of them to fix the original's mistake of calling Urbain a Sage.

It's baffling to me how Bluepoint didn't bother to fix most of the very well documented exploits and etc. That's why that clip is there. The community at large already knows of the exploits and glitches present in the original. And most of them are still there, untouched for them to abuse, along with newer, even more broken stuff (like the gold coin increasing your luck stat by about 2000, enabling you to one shot most bosses in the game with blueblood, the ultra op regen doable with the new deluxe edition ring)... it's funny, to be honest. Dist2 has finished the game online in 12 minutes. That's probably a record that won't be broken soon for the soulsborne series. This is by far the most broken experience on release i've ever seen. And yeah, the new animations for that intro are pretty goofy. I don't like them as well.
@MrFr2eman4 жыл бұрын
@@thefirelinkconspiracy Blue Point didn't have to fix it, since they're making the game on a different engine with different code, they wouldn't have those problems in a first place. They had to recreate all the glitches and exploits from the original, if you read or watch interviews, you'll see that they did it on purpose, they remade certain exploits and got rid of the others. Whether that's a good or bad decision, that's another question. I agree with your thoughts on the remake when it comes to the art direction, soundtrack, tonal shifts and such, but your opinions on the gameplay are quite strange to me. I don't think judging how broken or not broken the game is by looking at speedrunners is right, since out of bounds speedruns always been a thing. The fact that people can skip 90% of the game in Sekiro and complete the game under 20 minutes doesn't make it a broken experience, because you have to learn how to do it, you have to learn how to break it, and it's not easy. And all out of bounds any% runs of the souls games, or any games for that matter, are very quick, some go under 10 minutes. People just won't be able to randomly stumble into those glitches and screw up their playthrough, to finish DeSR in 12 minutes like Distortion did, you have to do very specific stuff, you have to know it's there and you have to know how to do it. If you didn't look up speedrun starts and didn't perform a certain setup, falling into a hole with soul remains in Boletaria-1 won't take you to the False King Allant fight, it will just kill you instead like it's supposed to. Only if you go online and spend hours learning and practising the speedrun starts and exploits, then you would be able to have a broken experience like you see in speedruns, but nobody would do it, unless it's their goal like OOB speedrunners.
@thefirelinkconspiracy4 жыл бұрын
@@MrFr2eman Most of the glitches aren't hard to do, in fact, some of the more broken ones are even easier than the duping glitch. You can one shot stuff by popping a gold coin in the nexus, basically. You can regen all your health in 5 seconds by clicking x on a menu a couple of times. I don't think only PvP glitches should be fixed, since i don't think it's healthy for any game if anyone can simply look up how to completely break the intended experience on youtube and reproduce it within a couple of attempts. I didn't like that the duping glitch was available in the original, and i'm puzzled as to why Bluepoint fixed that glitch but not the stunlocks/cursed weapon ToB setup/2kat 0-100 true combo/etc and even managed to add more exploits to an already glitch riddled game. I also don't understand why they felt it wasn't necessary to balance out the game, even though it is a consensus that there are many completely extremely underpowered/extremely overpowered stuff in the game that could use an adjustment. I don't think anyone would've said that it would be a mistake on their part to balance out the game a little bit and make a couple of weak stuff more viable while nerfing some of the more absurdly powerful equipment. It'd make 10x more sense than for them to mess with the soundtrack drastically, redesign pretty much every boss and creature of the game, change the atmosphere and architecture of most areas completely and butcher the intent of the original art direction as a whole. I don't know where you've read Bluepoint say they intentionally recreated glitches and exploits, though. I've read Polygon interview, the Washington Post interview and i've also watched the entire Digital Foundry interview, and i don't remember anything like that, although i could've forgotten or missed that point. But if you disagree with my views on the gameplay, it's fine of course. I'm glad you're watching this series, and i'm happy you agree with my views on the art direction and etc, it's the more important part of my critique after all. And thanks for sharing your opinions here, i appreciate it!
@MrFr2eman4 жыл бұрын
@@thefirelinkconspiracy It was from the Polygon interview, they mention how "meme-worthy bugs and game design quirks will be properly retained." And the fact that they're remaking the game in their own engine, means that they had to put all those glitches and exploits into the game intentionally. But I agree that it's not a good choice, it doesn't seem to add a whole lot to the experience, especially considering that the game seems to be largely made for people who haven't played the original. And if they wanted to please the old fans, they should've kept the "soul" of the game, not PvP memes. So I agree on that part too, that it's quite strange that they stayed so true to the original gameplay but then made huge changes to everything else, changes to things that probably matter the most when it comes to the identity of the game. That said, I still don't think it makes for a broken experience, even if you get invaded a couple of times by someone who will stunlock you with headbutts, overall gameplay experience will be smooth. I've been watching a lot of DeSR streams since it came out, and I haven't really seen people, who're doing a normal playthrough, having a glitchy, buggy experience, and haven't heard anyone talking about it in the chat either. And I don't think having an info on exploits available makes a lot of people use them, even if they're easy to perform, most people are looking for the experienced developers intended, they're not looking to intentionally break the game. Speaking purely about the gameplay, the Remake seems to be better than the original, they did balance things that would matter for a casual player, some QoL stuff that fixed some bad design choices from the original, like item burden, better movement and framerate, adjusted drop rates, some hitboxes are tighter and more clear and such. Anyways, I think you're doing a great job with these videos and I hope more people will see them. Even for those who enjoy the Remake and haven't played the original, I think it would be important to see the difference, and for those who did play the original, remind how different and unique it was and still is.

Why they have cartoons faces? Where the "new technology" what the developers were talking? You are right about too many points. Good job.

@@thefirelinkconspiracy Hey I'm watching your videos and I'm enjoying them a lot, especially because I'm an "artstyle > graphics" type of guy. However I don't understand how the "Body Type A/B" is dehumanizing. If anything, I think calling people "freaks" like this other dude did is way more dehumanizing. I personally choose not to use language like that but I understand the sentiment. I don't understand the "Body type A/Body type B" stuff at all, it makes zero sense whatsoever to me. If people identify as female then just choose a female character, if they identify as male just choose a male character. Wow, what a wonderfully produced video that ultimately focuses on such insignificant things. I understand the remake has bad art decisions, we've all seen them, but if this isn't the most nit-picky content I've ever seen on it. I mean, i know that it only came out very recently but just look at Ratatoskyr's video on the remake, it covers everything this does, but ultimately conveys it's point better because it isn't so dead set focused on details most people will not realize.

What gets me is the fact that they have Females as body type A and Males as body type B when we all know how the letter "B" looks. And Ladies, don't take what I say the wrong way; you all are amazing in your own right. The problem is Bluepoint games. If they are going to put woke ideology before everything else in their development work, why bother.

This is intended to be only a small part of a series i'm making about this remake. Most of the choices From Software made at the time were made because they didn't have money and time to do something better, not everything is an artistic choice. Same go for the monsters design, sure they looks more scary because they are less detailed and blurry in the PS3 version, It has nothing to do with design. Also defending the character creation in any Souls, really ? Even in Dark Souls 3 the character creation was still garbage and waaaaaaaaaaaay bellow what every game had at the time, the Demon's Souls remake character creation mode is just what you can see in every other AAA games, you can create whatever you want, not just a joke character

You're not a cinematographer, and it shows in your intro analysis. The "shrek" designs look better than the original game faces which don't look realistic at all, and imagine complaining about character customization options. Also, complaining about Dragon God actually looking like Dragon God... Only real valid complaint is the gargoyles in the cutscene, and that it still an inconsequential nitpick. Different = bad, purist fanboyism

"You're not a cinematographer, and it shows" these are just empty words to invalidate his observations without bringing up a counter argument. It's fine if you prefer BP's approach, but at least you should have share some insight on what they did better. It's also hypocritical calling him out on the character creator right after mentioning how much better the remake is. Regarding the dragon god, does the original not loolks like one? As I said, it's not a blasphemy to prefer the remake, but your comment makes you sound like you doesn't even watched a playthrough of the original for 5 minutes and got mad after some random scmuck dissed Blue Point's remake.
@fastenedcarrot95708 ай бұрын
None of the points made have anything to do with if anyone is a cinematographer or knows anything about cinematography. Dragongod in the original intro is much better imo, he looks much more real, the near invisible eyes are more intimidating than the glowing eyes and the roar causing his mouth and throat to vibrate adds to how real he looks. The remake looks cartoonish and much less real and intimidating.

@@imustconsultwiththeeldergo5906 Yeah? But for those who care more for the original thematic structuring and presentation of the original which trumps the remake by a long shot, it's unique and fits well for how the game wants to present itself, however the remake fails to capture that same exact atmosphere of the original by moving into an entirely different direction leaning towards more cliche and unoriginal styles that's been present in almost all media. It's not bad at any means at face value, it just doesn't fit Demon Souls' vision and the original does it's way better.
