when tanjiro first gets his sword it turns black. the black nichirin was for sun breathing. Urokodaki didn't know because sun breathing hadn't been seen for generations and was thought to be a myth. the other users who got the black nichirin died because they didn't/couldn't learn sun breathing. they were trying to live up to a potential that wasnt meant for them. the other demon slayers thought black nichirin meant a weak demon slayer destined to die young but it meant something else. black nichirin meant they were supposed to be amongst the greatest demon slayers. that's not to diminish other breathing styles like shinjuro. it's to make note that those other demon slayers might have accomplished more if sun breathing wasn't considered a myth.
