Some clarifications: A couple of episodes ago, the Master or Leader of the demon slayers did say the Butterfly Hashira’s name... her name is Shinobu. “Hashira” means “pillar.” 2) Not all coal making families know the Hinokami Kagura. The mom specifically said their family deals with fire and dance the Hinokami Kagura to ward off evil, etc. And, with the father’s talk of how he’ll pass down (the generations) the hanafuda-like earrings and the Hinokami Kagura, and thinking about the flashback that Muzan had (as you discussed) of the swordsman looming over him, you can deduce that someone among Tanjiro’s ancestors was a demon slayer, and a strong one to boot to make Muzan cower in fear like that. That ancestor had reddish hair, the earrings, and a red sword (which, if you recall, Haganezuka the sword smith hoped Tanjiro would have). I agree with Moostache that perhaps Muzan specifically targeted Tanjiro’s family. I remember thinking how absurd it was for a demon living in Tokyo to go out of his way to go up some remote mountain just to kill (and not even feast on) an entire family and turn one into a demon for kicks. But after we see his flashback, we can see he holds a strong grudge against that original swordsman/demonslayer intimidating him. So although the Hinokami Kagura was passed down the generations as a New Year’s ritual in their family, it’s true purpose may be a demon slaying breathing form (like Urokodaki’s water breathing). Fun fact: the design of the sword that the father uses in his Hinokami Kagura is from a real sword from Japan’s history (perhaps around 1500 years ago), and is speculated to have been used for religious ceremonies. A “kagura” is a religious dance. “Hinokami” could mean “Fire God” or “Sun God,” but as they wrote it in katakana, we cannot grasp the true meaning at this point. (NO SPOILERS please, manga readers!)

Dea Punsalan Thanks, but I'm not on some mission to find answers, so I'm not going to jump to a specific chapter of a manga. I want to enjoy the story as it is presented. If I decide to read the manga, I'll read it in sequence and enjoy each panel, speculate if I want to, make mistakes with the speculation as will likely happen, and be surprised by whatever twists the author puts in.
