It's 1985. I'am sitting in front of my tent in our garden listening to the radio. Suddenly I hear the first beats of "Don't you". I immediately start so sing along very loudly. My sisters are joining me and we are shouting every word. One of the best moments of my life - when I still had my whole life in front of me.

It is 1981, my new boyfriend wants to go and see a band in Brighton. We are in Maidstone a small county town, only about 30 miles away, but it may have been 1000 miles for kids with no money. Anyway, he sorts out a lift and we set off. The lift will pick us up after the gig which we estimate to be around 11.30pm. The band was Simple Minds and I was blown away. They were playing at The Top Rank Suite, which was not much bigger than a discotheque. A very young skinny Jim Kerr had me mesmerised. We got up onto the balcony so we could get a good view. One of the best nights of my life. Later we had to shelter in a phone box at the bottom of West St as it was freezing cold and raining sideways off the seafront and I was probably wearing a 1950's ballgown. The lift was late....

I would sneak out of church and listen to the top 40 till the bell rang and run back into church and get through Sunday school and then get home to rewind the tape and listen to what I had missed. One of the few songs that will always define the 80's. I remember that we were listening to this song on the radio when I was a teenager, in the second part of the 80's, during my high school years in Paris. Good old time when all we had to do was to be good at school, to have good moments with our friends, to go to the cinema to see the last blockbuster, and to listen all the good musics we had. No mobile, no social networks, no internet, no shit on TV, no crap medias, ... Only real life !

Actually, I was online in the 2nd part of the 80s.. and TV was often bad even then. I prefer the present, connection empowers us, more than it divides us. While 80s music was great, I do not idolize those days, they were worse... you just didn't generally hear about the bad things as much unless you were directly affected.

I agree with you. People often argue that all decades have their fair share of classic/timeless songs, yet I'm not always convinced by that statement (especially post 80s). The 80s just seemed to ooze talent in bucketloads, fusing elements from the 50s 60s 70s as mentioned above, this was the pinnacle, and it went down the shitter pretty quick after that in my opinion (bar a few maybe!) ...and I wasn't even around in the 80s, so it's not like a nostalgic nod to my youth or whatever, I'm 31, but that's my opinion on it anyway. 80s forever!

I don’t know what it is about the song, but it just gives me goosebumps. There are very few songs in the world that can do that. Thank you, Simple Minds.

It's because it finishes with an immensely powerful anthem, one that I can only compare to the way The Beatles' "Hey Jude" finishes. It's just as strong a popular music composition.

As somewhat of a pro (born 1966) I can tell you that mixing (and recording) a venue like this, with a large band like this, is horribly hard to accomplish. To make the result sound this good, the techies have done an amazing job. Hats off to them! Also noteworthy how tight Charlie Burchill plays his guitar, not to mention the drummer, good grief, I'm not worthy..
@jibbajabba47122 жыл бұрын
As somewhat of a oldie, I can tell you this is not unusual.. venues, gigs. the last 30 years just as good.. You are always worthy though..
@Meowbay2 жыл бұрын
@@jibbajabba4712 Still, I've mixed many live venues and bands (age 56), to get the end result to sound like this is truly hard to accomplish from live mics and rooms like this. They probably mixed it in post, but even then it's done very well.
Here's to the forgotten and to all those who refuse to be forgotten!!! To all those who were down, but not out, who turned their lives around and came roaring back!!! Cheers!!!
