Food Fr! My addiction is food. It impacts even the way I think. It has improved a little due to confession and asking the intercession of St. Mark Ji Tianxiang. But sometimes, especially this week, I feel like just giving up all together. Christ have mercy on us and may we be charitable to our neighbours with their addictive sins.

I'm in recovery from food addiction. It really helps to consider sugar and flour the same as alcohol and just fully abstain from them. And prayer, Adoration, the rosary.... Getting enough sleep and relying on God to comfort me vs relying on food.

Thank you for this video, father. As a counselor for 30 years now and someone who has also struggled with addiction, your video was so loving and nonjudgmental. A person can be addicted to anything, the key is, is it keeping you from freedom? Freedom to live your life, freedom to be available to your loved ones or connect with God? And the biggest reason, is it numbing you out from facing something you need to face? I personally feel there is a spirit of darkness associated with it, not an opinion that all counselors share.😏 But it doesn't matter, as long as you feel a fit with that counselor, and they can help. And admitting you need help is a strength, too many are still afraid because they see asking for help as a weakness. But help from God comes through people too. I'm sure you know the one about the guy waiting to be saved by God from a flood but rejected the boat and the helicopter, etc. because he was waiting for "God" to save him 🙂 I don't know how many times I have been told that I was a big help, but I didn't really "do" anything, they needed someone to listen and be nonjudgemental. I just wanted to say I love your videos and you have such a gentle, down to earth way of connecting with people.

I’ve found that God is in charge of everything. What scares people is the apparent plurality of reality. However, as long as you believe in God and strive in that belief, everything will make sense and be wrapped up in God’s will. I have been around the block of sinfulness, I’ve raised to the highest heights of prayer, I’ve been in and out of counseling, and I have found that, as Our Lord said, one thing is necessary. One thing I can recommend, dive into the Faith! And don’t let anyone tell you anything. The voice in your head is true.

Really great advice, Fr. Columba. I was struggling with an addiction for years and didn’t know how to deal with it when a priest recommended therapy in confession. As soon as I started therapy I was no longer struggling as much and began to really grow. There’s no shame in admitting you have a problem and need help. That’s just being human.

In my past I used "party drugs" and alcohol extensively, and I absolutely testify to the presence of the demonic in all and any addiction. The Devil knows where your weak spots are and works hard on them. In giving yourself to Christ you become free.

Thank you for this video, me myself is everything mentioned in this and student of counseling at the same time. Crazy, but real. Still working on myself and hope that this journey I took myself on will lead not just to help for others but finally understanding myself. Honestly, first year was really hard - like we all know: if you want to be good counselor, you have to fight with own demons and win. If you struggle - it does not mean you are bad counselor, or bad human, the fact you are aware of this fight means you are on right path. Thank you again

Another type of addiction is workaholic, which is so prevalent now in our society and it is considered "a praiseworthy personality." I have been suffered with this addiction for so many years until one day the Lord saved my life. However, the process of detoxification is not comfortable at all because I still cannot escape the mindset "I'm useless if I do not work."

Hello Father Columba, What do you think about those who say that Jesus is our healer and we don't need counselling, but they do go to a doctor when the pain is in their body? I read many people in Spain who gives you the advice of praying rosaries to get rid of addictions or an immature personality or whatever psychological hurt. I've always thought that body and soul are interweaved, and one affects the other. How brain, mind and soul are interconnected is kind of a mystery. Saying that praying rosaries is like a switch that fixes everything sounds peculiar to me. Besides, how many rosaries are needed? Is there a prescription? Thanks for letting us know your weakness. I sometimes think that there are so many strong Catholic people that do what they have to do without help and I find myself so weak some days...
@ctmcatholic6 ай бұрын
Hello, it’s Katie here I answer comments for Fr Columba, I hope you are well. As you pointed out, just as people go to the doctor for physical help we can and sometimes should go to a practitioner for mental help also. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t pray for our healing, we absolutely should do that too. But insofar as all of us are body and spirit (which is all of us) we must take care of both, and sometimes taking care of your body/mind means speaking to a counsellor for your mental health. I hope that can help!

Actually as a person who had an experience with demons that is the way I explain to people in order to help them. Catholicism of the last centuries lacks of the real teachings because exactly what do you said Father”we don’t want to freak out people” but that is not correct because when you explains things as actually work, how the spiritual world works, you also need to explain that there’s not need to be fearful at all, we feel fear when we don’t understand the enemy of our souls but also we cannot combat or fight against if we don’t know the enemy and we, the Church have all the weapons. My refuge is always go to the books of the first 1000 years of Christianity, they have all the answers and they are less repressive that what came after the French Revolution. I recommend also to read a book of 1600 written by Mary of Agreda, the Mystical City of God and it will blow your mine, answers of why we were created and how are there, for instance. Thanks Father and I am a donor.

Probably Internet is my addiction. It is compulsive. I cannot leave my phone. I cannot imagine a day without my Internet or phone. Pornographic material can be highly addictive. What is obsession or rumination? I do not know how long therapy should last. I think therapy can make you self absorbed. I wonder if gossip is addiction.
@ctmcatholic6 ай бұрын
Gossip is certainly addictive for most people. I think the risk for self absorption is much greater when addicted to the internet compared to humbly acknowledging the problem and getting counselling, but it’s good to pray and discern about these things. Katie
