It's been pointed out to us that via several translations the "slap" is clearly meant to be interpreted more as a punch. Our fault as we describe it and analyze it as a slap in this video. We'll leave the video up even with mistakes as I think it's worth still understanding and discussing it in the context of the era. i read this book last out of the big 4 of dostoevsky and, although it wasnt the one i liked the least, i can say that i had a very hard time understanding it. it seemed to me that it was the one novel that you had to know the most about the historic and literary context to be able to understand. being that this books main idea has to do a lot with what i believe as far as my own convictions go i decided to pick it up and read a few pages again and i was hooked. ended up reading the whole thing again. this book became my favorite book of all time. it is definitely worth taking the time to study it and understand everything that surrounds it. the enigma of Stavrogin still lives in my head rent free. pyotr stepanovich is my favorite villain of all time.

This is perfect! I have been trying to read and understand the novel. It is definitely confusing for an anglo. Stuck processing is the perfect way to put it. There's so much coming at the reader so quickly. Calling it a book of secrets makes a ton of sense.

I'm just over 100 pages in and I wa beginning to think this book was out of my league. It's challenging to keep track of who's talking as more characters are introduced. I decided to just focus on the relationships for now until the plot begins to tie together.

Thanks! The narrator's explanation was good! I think you make the "mistake" a lot of people make when they read Dostojewsky by jumping to the conclusion that he regrets former liberal thinking and that he is "just" an orthodox believer......Dostojewsky always shows the two way road, the dualism in every thought, for example Stavrogin's saying "If the truth excluded Christ, I would rather stay with Christ" this means, that Dostojewsky wants Christ, and longs for him, and he knows we need him in order to live without al hell breaking loose, but he does challenges the realness of Christ...it is both true....But this wil be a point of ongoing discussions....

I had such a hard time trying to figure out where Dostoevsky was going with this story (perhaps Dostoevsky himself wasn't yet sure) at the end of Part I. I suspect FD was still developing the story idea in his own head as he developed the plot from the 'idea'. I think he knew very well where he wanted to go with the story - but not entirely certain how he was going to get there. Until Part II. Just my own opinion.

Hi! Love your analysis, just wanted to point out, I don't think Shatov turned down Lisa's idea on principle, he even realised it would be a nice enterprise, and was glad about it. The reason he turned her down is because she said she had heard from Peter Verkhovensky that Shatov had a printing press, which was hidden, and illegal, and Shatov suspected her good intentions. Lise was oblivious to the secrecy of the printing press, but Shatov didn't know it, and he thought she might have ulterior motives for bringing it up, and that her enterprise was just a cover story to lure him in

I don't understand why you keep referring to it as a slap and talked about it for a few minute, when dostoevsky specifically said it was a punch. Anyway, it's a great video i appreciate you guys' analysis and insights.

Знаехте ли, че думата *нищо* не е само като значение (Нито един (предмет, явление, изказване, ситуация и др.). В стаята нямаше нищо. Нищо не разбирам. Нищо не ме интересува.), то във винителния падеж означава; "аз съм виновен, но и вие сте виновни, проклети да сте ако няма справедливост". В Престъпление и наказание има един пасаж; -- "Господ и така е длъжен да ми прости... Сам знае как съм страдала!... А ако не ми прости -- нищо!" Тук автора говори във винителен падеж -- проклети да сте, не е моя само вината в мен , но и вие имате отговорност; отговорност за общото от което зависи благоденствието на обществото. Та се чудя дали преводачите на Достоевски се съобразяват с винителния падеж и дали правилно го адаптират на английски.

I might be mistaken but I thought Shatov's 'slap' was a full on punch with his knuckles. At least that's how it was translated in the Dutch translation

Text clearly says "with his fist" and clearly says that it was not a slap. (Maguire translation).
