Setting Demons in a cinema was a clever move on the part of the filmmakers I think, as the audience is in the exact same location as the protagonists! Imagine watching this in a darkened cinema & fearing people might 'turn' around you :) The helicopter crashing through the ceiling towards the end has always stuck in my mind as one of the craziest most random things to happen in a movie! Thanks for mentioning that the apocalypse had already begun by that point, it completely explains it! Great review, cheers!

Wooooohooo I love this film - amazing soundtrack too. Demons two is also awesome. Zombie Flesh Eaters is brilliant how can you not love it? I also love films that don't point out everything, that's why I mostly dislike modern films. Everything is explained FFS it's so bloody annoying lol. Black Pimp voice FTW.

When it comes to the zombie flicks of George Romero and Lucio Fulci I do not get why one must hate and trash one and love and extol the other and pit them against each other in an idiotic pissing match. I mean, DIG this, .. . I have no difficulty liking them BOTH!

Awesome! Thanks so much. I think you have to go about Argento & (Mario / Lamberto) Bava movies with a different approach: do not search desperately for logic and a tight screenplay... forget about that. Stop asking yourself all of those questions (Iain: "Why....but.. WHY??!" :D), at least.. try to stop looking for plot-holes. These movies often have a dream-like quality to them, the audio-visual design is much more important than the screenwriting (style-over-substance). Gary sort of get's it... Take in the set-pieces, the effects, the music - the whole atmosphere. Flip the logic-swith to "off", get yourself some quality drinks and enjoy this piece of pure 80's extravaganza. I hope you are reviewing some more films of Argento / Bava in the future.

If you didn't spot it, BTW, Kano was the same actor as the guy in the movie who cut his face, and the side of his face that got cut/infected in the movie is the side that's covered with metal in the "real" world. So, my take on the setup was that the actor somehow got infected while filming the movie, and then tried to replicate the events from the script to let the demons out. You have the kids in the theater who mirror the characters on screen; they're the sacrifices. You have a demon mask that someone has to be stupid and play with (the whole Cabin in the Woods "they have to transgress" thing) so they can be infected, and then you have a load of screaming meat to feed and host the demons as they come through.

A prequel maybe - a group of people touring in some remote part of south america discover a spiky plant near a dormant volcano which, if it pricks you, turns you into a rabid-like maniac with rapid growing nails and teeth. The infection is contagious. One particularly sinister rich investor decides to add it to his own exquisite collection of novel poisons, going so far as to spike one of his prized ancient medieval demonic masks with the poison. He then poses as a movie producer, hiring a bunch of film-students to shoot a low budget movie involving his mask as a prop, but secretly wants to use it as an experiment to see the chaos that the infection can cause.

I get both of your views on this. For one, if you want answers and logical progression from your horror, than Italian movies from... most any era are not the best call. At the same time, there is a certain... something to so many of them. It might have something to do with the particular social anxieties of Italian people of the time, perhaps?

Such a fun and insane horror film, i love it! I think the best way to enjoy it is just to go with every ridiculous thing that happens in it, because obviously the filmmakers also didn't want to make super serious horror film.

As a huge fan of traditional metal and the convergence of horror, fantasy and samurai motorcycles, I can't help but love this movie. My biggest disappointment in this movie was the tail ending but my second biggest disappointment was the fact that the theater employee with the red hair and green dress wasn't part of the conspiracy. I don't get how she can be an employee of this evil theater, look sultry, mysterious and vaguely evil and NOT be in on it. So I can't definitely sympathize with Iain's issues in regards to her.

Hi guys. Loved the review but do feel the need to correct you on one thing. This was never a video nasty. It never appeared on the list of 72 titles that fell under that classification (according to the Jake West documentary 'Video Nasties: Moral Panic, Censorship & Videotape') and it did not appear on the Section 3 list either. There was a title called 'Night of the Demon' that was about a bigfoot (the infamous ripping of a bikers c*ck off scene) and the Jess Franco film 'The Demons', which did show on the Section 3 list. A small point for an otherwise excellent review.

Love these Italian horror movies. The beyond, Zombie flesh eaters, city of the living dead, the house by the cemetery and of course demons 1 & 2 are the best! If Iaian has a problem that he NEEDS the why’s and how’s from horror movies or sci-fi or thrillers or a bunch of other movie genre’s, I think movie reviewing is the wrong profession for him. Or he just doesn’t get movies. Does he dislike Evil Dead, The Thing, Friday The 13th, and a slew of other movies that don’t explain their characters all too much, leave a lot of mystery about the killer(s), leave mysteries about the universe we are watching. Mystery means leaving some things unexplained to produce fear of the unknown. I get it in reality that knowing information about everything is important but in movies, where you are supposed to be on an entertaining ride, this doesn’t apply. In Blair Witch the Witch can bend time and space within the forest, same for Evil Dead. Are all these concepts new to Iain? He says he likes horror, even named a few favorites but then goes on to seem like he is frustrated with simple horror staples, simple horror concepts, simple setups.

I feel the same way as Iain about those Italian movies. I cannot believe people praise The Beyond so highly. That shot with the woman walking through the sewer toward the plumber and the other guy was so oddly shot in and of itself that it encapsulates the problem I have with those movies in general. I only recently watched Suspiria past the first few minutes, and found it very good, but not as good as many seem to consider it. I bought and watched Zombi(e Flesh Eaters) some time in the early to mid 2000s on the basis of someone somewhere recommending it who I can only imagine was a totally pretentious scumbag or had suffered massive head trauma. Those Lucio Fulci movies are so pitifully executed you can't even necessarily tell what the fuck is supposed to be happening.

Demons is cheesy schlock horror with over the top blood and gore. It's not supposed to be taken to seriously or tell a deep complicated story. It's a mindless popcorn horror film that you just sit back and enjoy the ride without thinking to much into it. It's not like they were making The Shining, Rosemary's Baby or The Exorcists.
