Why? Because not all students are like this. It is extremely frustrating, being a teacher, and trying to do things like this with kids that just don't care and want to do nothing but socialize and goof off (middle schoolers)

I have been doing a similar demonstration with my 8th graders for years. We just bump shoulders to pass the P-waves, but other than that, it's the same! Thanks for posting this. I was sad I wouldn't be able to this particular demo this year, what with virtual learning and social distancing. Now I can show them this. Thank you so much!

Gerald -- S waves are body waves in which the motion is perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation. Don't think in terms of up and down or side to side as much as perpendicular. Think of the difference between snapping a rope (s wave) and sending a compression wave down a slinky (p wave).
