Here's the video of California Waste Solutions demoing a Labrie Automizer mounted on a 2018 Peterbilt 520 from Milpitas Sanitation (for those who were wondering why it's white/green). I quoted "demonstration" as it's not a true unmarked demo truck straight from the manufacturer, but I digress lol.
About 20 minutes before the video began, the hopper got seized up with a bunch of cardboard that was either bridging on top of the blade, or just wasn't being packed. The driver's supervisor showed up and tried to troubleshoot the issue (you can see his pickup in the first shot). We all found a temporary solution by essentially just removing all of the cardboard from inside the hopper, monkey stomping on the boxes, and re-arranging the cardboard inside.
Don Arata (CEO of AEC) then showed up to try to troubleshoot the packing issue. It was originally thought to have been a bad proxy switch, but it was just the auto-pack feature not being enabled. This meant the blade would only cycle for a couple of dumps before stopping, which resulted in all of the hangups. Once the auto-pack was enabled, the truck kept on going without any issues.
The second day this truck was out, there were hardly any issues if any. Of course with the heavy amount of cardboard that was out, there were some hangups with packing, but nothing the truck couldn't handle. The only issue was the truck not having a tray for used oil, so there were a couple houses that didn't have their oil picked up.
The only quirk I see with this truck is the truck lacking a crusher panel. Of course, since this unit typically runs yard waste routes in Milpitas, it wasn't equipped with one. Plus, the body isn't able to rise without the tag axle being down and other safety cutoffs, so the body can't be raised to do a gravity pack either.
Seeing another Labrie Automizer isn't a big surprise to me, as almost every hauler in SJ has at least a handful in their fleet (large credit goes to Arata lol). However I wouldn't see this as being completely out of the ball park for CWS if they stepped away from their longtime manufacturer McNeilus, and went with another manufacturer. Maybe they'll even split the order w/McNeilus & Labrie, who knows. If CWS does allow their drivers to leave lids open again (if they are to renew their contract with the city), I can expect a fairly high level of productivity that comes from this truck after the drivers get used to the controls.
(more of my personal comments regarding the truck can be found here: docs.google.co... )
Thank you to the driver for allowing me to film!
Enjoy the video!
