Hi Nancy, Janet here... thank you so much for making this very helpful video. I should be getting your booklet in the mail today. Really can't wait to have it in my hands. I was wondering if you could recommend the types of pillows that would be good for propping. My mother is 93, and about 90lbs. Edit: I have another quick question. Do you happen to have a video on how to place a sheet under a patient that has an injured arm/hand and can't turn to their side? My mother fell and fractured a rib. She is in the hospital right now but I'd like to be prepared for when she comes home next week.❤

Good morning Janet, thank you for your questions. Please see our video on placing a turn sheet under a patient so that you can move her safely for both yourself and your mom. Pillows are pillows don’t worry about the type. A king size is really nice for supporting the back. You just need to have at least 31 under the head one behind the back one between the legs. And don’t forget to float the heels when she’s on her back. Best wishes

Log roll the patient and you still need to separate the legs with a pillow to prevent wounds from developing between the knees. Glad you have asked because we are soon to have a video on this. My current patient has muscle rigidity in her legs and knee pain. I cannot get the top leg bent to roll her at all, and can only get the ankle crossed over occasionally. (Also she's not in a hospital or twin bed which makes everything more difficult) Right now, I'm rolling her away from me from behind using the sheet and inching a support pillow under her little by little. Please tell me there's an easier way, it's uncomfortable for both of us

Please contact her MD to address medication for both rigidity and pain. We always expect pain with some caregiving - especially when a pt is in one position for a long time but they should be able to receive care without extreme discomfort . Always float the heels and keep a pillow between the knees and then you will have to log roll using the turn sheet and have a pillow at hand to place behind the back. GET the correct DME - you will hurt yourself if you don't have a hospital or twin bed - talk to the provider and the family. Good job! It is an honor! Thanks for watching and keep us in your focus. What if you’re dealing with someone whose knees don’t bend? Someone with severe immobile arthritis of the knee, etc?

You always will have patients that have different disabilities and needs. So be creative but in this case, probably, you’ll just have to log. Roll the person without bending their knees. I cannot get my mother t roll into me.she says she will fall off the bed..She has dementia and is 107 pounds.I am 235 (I’m not fat I’m fluffy!) Do you have any tips for making her feel more confident in my endeavor to turn her? (Ps we are in early days of her being bedridden and I have hired caregivers for four hours a day-but only since I’ve had to struggle with brief changes for an hour).

People with dementia become frightened when their body is moved - they fell a loss of control and fear of falling. Always gently remind her before you start and during with reassurance of exactly what you are doing. If you are unable to provide safe care for her - she may need to have medication for the dementia to allow for decreased anxiety and agitation. Your hospice team can recommend... Thanks for watching.
