the motel isn't LM308 which is what i restricted this particular series to. i've been considering a later rat week and calling it "(not quite) rat week" where i focus on pedals that started as rats, but took on a life of their own like motel and drv.

Ohhhh yeah I was waiting for this one! Looks like the Skinner Box has a lot more gain and volume on tap compared to the Proco and stayed tight all the way up the dial. Compared very favourably to the Proco, glad I picked this one up! Absolutely awesome bit of gear.

Matt makes superb pedals. The end. Haha. Always love a Rat demo. I remember years ago doing the LM308 chip mod on a You Dirty Rat i had, and being all smug. It did sound better, but i was in the studio one time and the engineer had an original Rat. Staggeringly good sound and put my YDR to shame. The Skinner Box reminds me of the feels i got hearing THE original ProCo Rat sound at that time 😍

Ryan nice video as always.. As I was considering the last couple of months to buy either the iron horse or the gorilla, thanks to your video, I discovered this wicked pedal. It sounds fat but still with great definition.. I hope it's gonna feel as well very dynamic to my fingers as my stand-alone and only drive before my fender amp too. In the end I couldn't wait till the end of the rat week in order to decide.. and I pulled the trigger for a used (red) skinner box in good condition on reverb.. The price after import taxes in EU etc.. still gonna be pretty reasonable.. and cheaper than the other candidates. Its selectivity because of the metal can I think is very big too. Just saw the woodcutter too. For me a nice old vintage rat with more bass frequencies.. like it a lot. Ronquillo was making him blowing from harmonics on his demo. So keep the rat fans excited...Don't forget to tell us in the end or now your favourite!

The Skinner Box is good in its own right: like a Rat on steroids. If in-your-face is what you want, this is the one. For me, the Rat still sounds more musical. The Box's extra range on the Gain doesn't add much and, as you noted, the lower gain sounds aren't as good as the Rat's.

i don't think that's a LM308, which is what i limited this 2021 series to because there are so many rat variants out there and i have to narrow down per series. i'd be interested in finding a way to include it in a future rat week series!
