Before there was Aja, before there was the Gaucho, before there was Reelin' In The Years, and before there was even My Old School, there was Fagen & Becker. Or maybe it was Becker & Fagen. Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. They were incredibly similar, and incredibly distinct, but they would become Steely Dan. There was a complementary interest in Jazz (Duke Ellington), Sci-Fi, (Philip K. Dick), and black humor. A review (or revue) of Steely Dan is impossible without discussing Fagen & Becker's origins in the culture of the 1960s-and their segue away from it. There was Bard College and Bob Dylan, but their was also Charlie Parker, Tom Lehrer, and even Vladimir Nabokov. Then there was Jay and the Americans, then there was Kenny Vance...
The lost demos and to the unofficial album releases. Whatever happened to "Tell It To The Fat Man"? From "Let George Do It" to "Brain Tap Shuffle", these songs by proto-Steely Dan were wird, wacky, and often grotesque. Donald Fagen called it the "Jewish School of Black Humor" unique to New York.
These were their early years and all the in-jokes that filled their Demos.

What about the Kunckle Sandwich reel? What about You Gotta Walk It? What about Dallas? There are a couple more years to reel in before we get anywhere.

I already love this video and o haven’t even seen it, Steely Dan demos are probably one of the best parts of Steely Dan, love the knuckle sandwich jam, have walk it like you talk it on vinyl and Dallas is underrated and would’ve been a big hit

Wow...Diamondhead! I never knew there was a tie to Steely Dan! I love both bands! Diamondhead was a HUGE influence to every metal band in existence. There wouldn't be Metallica or Slayer without Diamondhead. It just shows that it's all connected in music. Another Masterpiece! Thank you!

Great video, was excited to see this coming up. I love the demos, always have. It's a shame some of the songs never carried over onto the actual albums e.g. Sun Mountain, despite being 'too sincere'.

... is there any song with sleigh bells that isn't a Christmas song? I've got very very little familiarity with Steely Dan, but I'm always down to listen to you dig into something. Nice touch with the switch sounds around the radio interview sections.

Looking it up, apparently "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys does use Sleigh Bells. There is also probably another one from the 1960s/1970s that is slipping my mind. Also, technically, "Jingle Bells" was conceived as a Thanksgiving or drinking song, but that's an old American remark.

Sorry for all the troubles. Here it is. If you dare, start with Los Sorias, by Alberto Laiseca, a literary labyrinth. If you think it's overwhelming, try his short stories, like Garden of Talking Machines. A rare example of a Argentine writing fantasy Is Angélica Gorodischer, Kalpa Imperial is excellent. If you want classical whodunnits, Manuel Peyrou and Pérez Zelaschi. Overshdowed by Borges and Bioy Casares, her husband, Silvina Ocampo Is a great narrator. Ricardo Piglia has intense noir thrillers you may like ( also, an important essayist), Leopoldo Marechal's Adán Buenosayres if you want a surrealist yet very porteño take on the Ulysses. Pablo Manzur if you want hardboiled stories, and Juan Sasturain if you want a parody of said hardboiledness which Is also quite entertaining. There Is also one of the best Argentine writers, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, but he may be of little interest to you. Rodolfo Walsh has neat crome stories, but he Is a proverbial can of wormd. The most obscure writer I can reccomend Is Carlos Mastrangelo, but I doubt you will find a copy of any of his books, I only have one. Perhaps online? By the way, Alberto Laiseca was also a great narrator, he has a show on channel I-Sat where he retold orally all sorts of horror stories. You can watch almost every segment in KZbin, search for Cuentos de Terror con Alberto Laiseca. And this is all I can mentions nos, in a haste. Later, I can search my library and find more. Hope this helps a bit.

Very much worth the wait! I've saved this comment on a document on my computer so I'll always have it on hand. Alberto Kaiseca's work and "Kalpa Imperial" immediately attracted me. Also, there's a Carlos Mastrangelo from Argentina who lives in Utah, but I assume that is not the same person? Should let you know I did just acquire a digital copy of "Los Sorias" right after reading. The few brief English plot summaries I found are some of the most interesting things I've read in years. Laiseca's style is very thick (Baroque?), so my progress is slow, but I'm loving "Los Sorias" so far. The opening argument between Iseka and the two Sorias is incredibly funny to me. I'm obviously unfamiliar Laiseca (I've seen some people mention he's the best kept secret of modern Spanish literature), but I assume the argument, with such strange interjections, is highly representative of Laiseca's style? Something about "Son tan budistas y no violentos como el general Tojo" just stuck in my brain the second I read it. I'm going to look through these in-depth, but I couldn't resist starting "Las Sorias". I might have to steal: "diez años para escribirla, veinte años para editarla, treinta años para convertirse en unclásico" for a new channel motto. Maybe in English something like: "Ten years to write, twenty to edit, and thirty to make famous". Once I summit the 1300 pages, I may have to make a video on it because it is a crime I've never heard Laiseca mentioned once before this comment. Always enlightening comments from you. This one unlocked a whole new world.

I'm glad you are enjoying Los Sorias, it's an experience, not just a novel, the closest I have read that left me in awe like his writing was the Nova Trilogy, The Aleph and the Illuminatus Trilogy. Laiseca's style is unique, very much his own, there is nothing alike. He truly was the last great Argentine writer. I forgot some names, Santiago Dabove, inhabitant of Morón, known because Borges knew him, his only book is hard to obtain, but you can read some stories online, among the best short stories written in castellano. Leopoldo Lugones, our famous and infamous National Poet, his short stories are pulpy and entertaining, and some are just great, like Los Caballos de Abdera, which has one of my favourite endings ever. Marco Denevi and Fernando Soriano are great satirists, you can learn a lot about Argentina reading them.
