1943. A young platoon commander refuses to follow an order of frontal attack; he doesn’t want to send his soldiers against the enemy machine-guns and get them killed. A battalion commander rips off his shoulder straps and sends him to the military tribunal. But the war is everywhere and the demoted officer and his escorts have to start an unequal fight with the enemy.

The lieutenant investigator is a classic example of what happens when an unprepared subordinate becomes subject of power; constant power tripping, abuse, challenging his own authority, clueless about what to do with the authority invested on him. Lost the whole group and objective within 2 hrs. The anthropofagic german is an example of extreme survivalism as a result of his own failure at adapting to his World/worldview crumbling and crashing. The symbolisms of the lost children of the motherland is beautifully presented, the loss of your own kin, your own flesh and blood. It tears through you. Russian literature has such deep, profound, philosophical reflection. Beautiful, excellent movie.

I have seen quite a few Russian war movies. Most of them are excellent. I think I know why. Russian war movies are often not about the war... They are about people. Its not about hero's, but about ordinary citizens who by pure coincident become greater than life. And again I could not hold back my tears. Thank you for making this movie available.

And this applies to all films, from comedies to tragedies with blockbusters !!! 🥶 American films are always an action !!! good, high-quality, Russian films, the director is trying to penetrate into the souls of the heroes of the film !!! 😜 There are amazing dialogues, voiced thoughts and monologues of heroes .... This is the essence of Soviet-Russian films !!! In the same comedies, it is very rare for a driller to laugh at the action, falling, hitting, and so on ... this movies are so cool !!! 😜👍Unfortunately, nobody from Americans understands the beauty of Soviet films !!! And this is true mastery of both, comedies and tragedies !!! 😜👍 In order to plunge into the essence of such films to the very depths, you must have a special mentality !!! And to be honest, only `` homo sovieticus '' can appreciate all their charm !!!! 😜🤯 For example, I am proud that I am the bearer of this mentality !!! say, from a million dollars !!! 🤪 When money and anything else in general is not just not in the first place in the list of your values, money is absolutely not in the list of your values !!! Money is only a means, but no matter how valuable !!! 😜 Today it is difficult to understand even in the post-Soviet space, nor what is in America !!!! 🤯😜 But no matter how paradoxical it may seem today, we grew up with just such a mentality !!!! We all had a little bit of everything, but enough for life !!!! @@ninogegelidze1891 I am from the 'West' and I agree with you 100%. Hollywood movies, most of them high technical quality, lots of action, but I find them just soooo boring. Not much depth. They are living on words, rather than feeling. I have found a nurturing of my heart in many Russian movies, which I seldom find in US ones. European movies I find not quite so loud mouthed as US movies, but too much focussed on intellect to my liking. There is a magical quality about Russian made movies which is simply outstanding 🙂 --- And I think this also reflects in the state of mind/heart of the people of the different countries. All the best for Russia and it's people ♥

O God in heaven ! What a brilliant movie, Heart rending and such sensitive touching movie! One can cry his heart out at the depiction of horrors of war. Tired seeing battalions of soldiers shot down , bombs blasts,, shrieking artillery shells rolling tanks destroying every thing in their paths. This brilliant movie brought to life by such wonderful artists never heard of on international arena. The directors deft handling of the scenes keep your eyes stuck to the screen. I am surprised at the humane touch the Russians have shown in dealing with sensitive subject bringing out the anamolies of the real life situations on the battle field. Hats off to them for such a wonderful movie.

It is a true true classic. It shows the horrors of war in great detail. Must be made compulsory viewing for all our heartless 'great' world leaders who are ready to go to battle at the drop of a hat. For the patriotic Russian soldier, death comes from his own government (due to stupid tribunals and lack of supplies etc) as well as his German enemies. A double enemy he faces, as it were. Words fail me to describe the plight of the hero, the worldly wise old soldier( like me , he watches helplessly and acts to the best that he can to salvage the impossible), the hapless lady doctor, the woman driven mad by the goings-on. The bureaucracy of war is shown well by the foolish young lieutenant with his rules and his papers. The madness of war is also shown by the daily changing frontlines- German today and Russian tomorrow- with heaps of dead soldiers strewn all over whose nationality you cannot make out The bleak snowy landscape adds to the horror. We Indians in tropical areas are always fascinated by snow and its landscape. But I for one will never be so, after watching this gripping film which shows men barely holding on to their lives in such intense cold lands. Finally I am reminded of the words of a Russian engineer Bilikov , a colleague of my dad, who was in India in 1965, who (even while I was a young boy) described in detail the terrible war in which he had participated and he said he hoped there would never never be such a war again Kudos to the team for making such a realistic film and thanks for the English subtitles, enabling a global audience to appreciate this great Russian film

Recently I've seen a lot of Soviet and Russian war movies, it's become a kind of obsession to me. Having seen a lot of really good ones, I can say that this film is definitely one of the best, in the same league as the 'big oldies' like The Dawns Here are Quiet, or The Fate of a Man, or Ivan"s Childhood, or The Ascent, or Come and See, just to name a few. I particularly liked the humanism of this film, something we should all learn to have in any situation. Thanks Phoenix for revealing another treasure for me and giving me an opportunity to get an insight into life and human nature.

What an exquisite movie, a true work of art! The directing, cinematography and characterisation are brilliant, so much so that someone who doesn't understand Russian could merely immerse themselves visually to follow the plot and experience the emotional impact. The subtitling is excellent and much appreciated. Even though nuances in the dialogue may be lost, the text remains poetic and the sound of such a lovely language is like a tiger purring. It should be watched to the very end of the credits for the last moments of beauty and profound symbolism to be absorbed. The Russian film industry is to be applauded. This is one of the most moving films about war I have ever seen. So touching, when the old Private's real identity becomes clear, among men who'd fought with him & loved him, juxtaposed against the fanatical desperation of the idiot Investigating Lieutenant. No heroism, just a compelling & frightening message about the horror & futility of war. I rank this as one of the top three- if not the best movie about humanity I've ever seen. Russian cinema is really coming into its own & this film is a shining example.

Well done to an admirable tribute to the Sons of Mother Russia, who fought off despair, hunger, forced slavery, executions and hate from all sides in a war of evil, do unto them, as ye shall have done unto ourselves, do or die moments of fortified madness, justified by hate, decided by hate and pacified by hate, in the unknown, unheard and unseen peace of death. This is an endearing film of great quality and depth regarding the savagery of war and the horror of your own men turning on each other when the cesspit of combat becomes a cauldron of death defying decisions brought on simply by the will to survive. Thank you for recommending this, it stands as an inspiration to many that the greatest hero we can be in our lifetime, is the hero who does his utmost to prevent war, alas, when it is war and there is no other choice, there is no other finer mission, ethic, ethos or belief than to obey the will to survive, that is war and even the winner pays a heavy price, but it is the price of survival, the ultimate.

Absolutely adored this movie. I think budgetary constraints likely made this more a filmed play than an action movie, and it did the story justice. The twist (no spoilers) was both remarkable and very well foreshadowed. This instantly became one of my favorite WWII movies... and war movies in general. As a former serviceman, US Army, I totally relate to it.

Он уступил председателю ШАС Арье Дери и выделил дополнительное финансирование на программу продуктовых талонов, увеличив ее бюджет с 850 миллионов шекелей (234 миллиона долларов) до миллиарда шекелей. Он сделал это, несмотря на постановление суда, которое гласит что эти ваучеры выдавались предвзято в пользу ультраортодоксальных семей. Бюджетный отдел уверен, что коалиционные соглашения приведут к резкому падению уровня занятости ультраортодоксов и к сокращению валового внутреннего продукта на 6,7 триллиона шекелей к 2060 году, что потребует 16-процентного увеличения налоговых поступлений. Moving and sublime. My old fella, a motorcycle fanatic, was in the newly liberated Berlin. He rebuilt a damaged bike and thought he'd go for a tour of the British sector. One wrong turn and he ended the day as a "prisoner" of the Russians. They telephoned his base. Russian apparently asked to speak to his "Officer" who duly vouched for his identity and he was returned. The "Officer" was my Dad's Corporal. My Dad was his Sergeant. He was apparently treated very well bythe Russians. The Corporal was given a weekend pass for having the initiatve to impersonate an "Officer". McIntyre

My father-in-law was at Smolensk, Moscow, Siminindijewa/Nedeljoje surrounded on Christmas Day, Ssumy, Zhitomir, Kharkov, Kursk, Dniepetrosk, the Don with the Hungarians, Stalingrad line north with the Italians, Kiev, Belarus and, after his unit (Pzjg. 559) was destroyed, the Southern Bug with Kampfgruppe Lammerding. He let many Russians go and the Partisans once let him go. He told me, "I could have lived my life in Russia" and that, "In those times I knew Russia better than I knew Germany." He spoke Russian, Polish and German. He told me, "They [the officers] blew a whistle and if you didn't do what they told you, they shot you" and, "If you said anything against the regime or against Hitler, it was up against the wall by sundown." In France, the Amis blew a hole in his back, lung and chest. I have been to Russia four times and to the Ukraine. The Russians and Ukrainians have been good to me and my family. Peace to all peoples. Please, no war. Thank you for this film.

One of the recently obsessed here also. Started with T-34, now I am here with some other movies in between. This one was very good, showing the senselessness of fighting not only our fellow men, but also our brothers in arms. It seems, at times, humanity is it's own worst enemy.

Great film; moving, touching and dark. I have really got into these Russian films and feel myself turning into a Russophile. The Great Patriotic War was the ultimate in searing experiences and one can only be awed by the heroic struggle the Russians put up to save their Motherland. I find the obvious pride they have in their struggle, in their art music and literature very admirable and touching, something lost in Britain

Great Movie, very deep philosophical drama! Each character in it represents wide range of people with own specific roles and actions in the war with fascists. Very impressive screenplay, and those phrases like "...it's my fault, that's our soldier's fate - to be guilty", and another one: '...what a war without a tribunal" ! Those words got such a strong meaning in the context. I've watched this movie in my native language, which is Russian, I know English as well and subs are good, but original is much much more powerful! strongly recommend, enjoy!

Russian war movies are much deeper than american war movies. Maybe because all russians were involved in the war, military and civilians, and it was a war primarily for survival, not for geopolitical power. Spassibo for this great movie.
