@@marshallhughes4514 I did buy it and I'm happy I did. I've also got the Topping D90SE, and I enjoy the features and characteristics of both (Bluetooth on the Topping is a fantastic feature). I like that I have both Delta Sigma and R2R DACS in my collection, and the Ares II is reasonably priced. The sound on the Ares II is definitely more spacious and less fatiguing, and everything this video talks about is spot on.

It would be interesting if you could review the Ares 12th with all the firmware updates just to see how it stacks up against the Biifrost 2/64 now and Gustard R26, Yggy, etc. This is also your second most watched video so might make sense for you to review the 12th just for that reason alone. : )

I'd be happy to if it was easier to get demo units. The local market is fairly small so the distributor didn't carry spare demo stock at last check so timing a loan for review can be tricky

@@JetEarlewood are you talking about me? I have definitely found this to be a trend with most integrated gear, not just Topping. The Bifrost 2 uses an integrated output stage, but it has some interesting qualities... Agree, it would be great if auditioning were easier. @@PassionforSound you are welcome. Just to clarify my point of view given it may sound like I don’t like Ares 2 “that much”: while it may lose against others on the retrieval of the most subtle details that have an immediate impact and “wow-effect” when you listen to “gears”, it definitely allows me to listen to my music for hours without any fatigue, which in the last 16 years (and 4 different DACs) was only a prerogative of my turntable. That will be a result of equipment limiting the differences heard (i.e. THX AAA 789). I've done some blind A/B testing yesterday and while I was also slightly limited by the particular setup I was using, I could clearly tell the differences. Interestingly, due to the gear limitations I couldn't say which I preferred, just that they were different.

Very nice reviews. I like the style and the detail. They are lengthy but not boring. I think that you could go for a review a step or two up in the Denafrips DAC catalog and get that extra resolution you are missing. I am interested in your point of view regarding the SMSL M400. Judging by the sound samples in another channel looks like it has resolution without the D90 harshness, closer to Ares II maybe (I own the Denafrips and I also notice a little lack of resolution).

This was my first look at Passion For Sound. I thought you did a very good review. It was laid out well with intelligent comments. It was also well paced. Your photography was excellent. Your "B" roll was as good as the "King of B Roll" himself - J. Darko :) As an owner of an Ares II your comments has influenced me to revisit the up-sampling options on this DAC. Maybe I dismissed them prematurely. However, one correction with the price in US dollars. The US price right now is $755. I think you mistakenly referenced the price in Singapore dollars in the video.

Oh well now you've done it - and I was just about to pull the trigger on a Topping D70! Great review by the way, I'm subscribed and it was your take on the little Topping E30 that led me to buy the E30/L30 stack for headphone listening last week - wow, all I could keep saying was - how much did this cost again!! 😊 So for a laugh I took out my RME ADI-2 from the main system and popped the little Topping in... oh dear now I have to rethink price/features all over again! I had to tune down the brightness a bit with Roon DSP with the RME, but the little Topping turned what had been unlistenable glare into some kind of super tweeter detail? DSP off and I'm still listening - hence the thoughts about a D70 to see what that sounds like in my system? Have you heard one yet? All the best Tim
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim, thanks for sharing your experiences. I'm glad my reviews have been helpful. That's really interesting that you're preferring the E30 in your system over the ADI-2. While the ADI-2 does do some things better than the E30, I can understand what you're saying about needing to tone it down. I haven't tried a D70 yet and I'm trying to take a break from Topping for a little while, but I'll probably check it out in the future.

I recently bought some new speakers. They are JBL Stage A180's. They are warmer than my old PMC FB1's. I ran the FB1's with the slow filter and that was good. That filter did not suite the JBL's at all. The fast filter is much more enjoyable, changing made a positive difference. Moral: just do the experiment with your speakers and just do not just elect and stick with the slow, warm setting as some have suggested. Thanks again for a very thoughtful review.

I was hesitant to purchase the Ares II, as every DAC I have owned are all clinical sounding to my ear. Listening fatigue set in within a hour, even casual listening, it was unbearable, mid tier DACs, roughly in the $1000 +/- range, Schiit Gungnir was one of them... Well, after so many glowing reviews I bit, and damn glad I did! Huge sound difference to my ears, no more fatigue, music is now enjoyable to listen to and I can play my system all day long now without having to turn it off. I see a Pontus II in my future. I mainly listen to R&B, Jazz and some classic rock. I use my old OPPO BDP-83 and a GeerFab D.BOB to get native DSD to my Ares II, love my SACDs... In fact, my experience with Denafrips was so incredibly good, that I went and bought their Iris DDC, their Hades preamp and their Thallo amplifier. I have the KLH Model 5 speakers and I have to say the sound out of this system still knocks my socks off. And the few folks that have heard it are impressed to say the least, their smiling faces, head bobbing, a hell ya every now and then, along with some serious toe tapping give away their true thoughts.

REALLY great review. Comprehensive, and intuitive to the nature of why we would be concerned with the differences. Curious as to how the Modius and the Ares II compare to the Airist audio R2R dac. Hi John, I wish I still had the Airist to confirm this. I don't think it had the soundstage chops of the Ares II, but is probably comparable to the Modius in overall sound quality (all from memory). The Ares II would likely be a nice upgrade if you like the smooth and spacious sound of R2R designs
@luckyupyours
@luckyupyours 3 жыл бұрын
The Airist dac was really mediocre even comparing it to delta-sigma dacs around the same price. The only thing the Airist dac had going for it was a deep soundstage and forward midrange. I think the Ares II would be a big step up from it.
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын

@@PassionforSound There is no way the Ares II is as lacking in detail as the Airist... The Airist was one of the least detailed DACs I've heard. The measurements between the Ares and Airist alone would suggest that the former should have way more detail and better sound reproduction. I'm not so inclined to believe that measurements are everything, but they do play a role in the accuracy and detail level, at least in my experience.

@@luckyupyours Hi Brandon, I’ve had the Airist for some time now. Although I’m inclined to eventually move up to the Ares -not just as a sound upgrade but also for added inputs and balanced outs - I’ve been absolutely enjoying the Airist. Can’t say I wouldn’t get some great detail/stage/enjoyment from a high quality delta sigma, but I can tell you that everything about the Airist is head and shoulders above a Schiit Modi II it’s replaced in every single way. So much so, that I don’t find myself starving for detail, whatsoever. Going to a nearby HiFi shop with T+A front end, I still don’t hear that much more than what I get from my humble system with the same tracks (at least as far as detail is concerned). That Airist is really well designed and constructed for the $. The main thing that trades in where R2r is concerned is a second order harmonic (effect) that byproducts in a way that you don’t get from delta sigma. They don’t measure well for good reason. But I’m just illustrating a point here, you’re absolutely correct about the measurement comparison and validity therein. I’d say the Airist is at the “barely acceptable” range of measurements there. But man, it does sound great (to me) nonetheless. Don’t know...your system is most likely on another plane than my baby system 😊🤷🏻‍♂️

Hello, you are making great reviews, very informative and helpful. I have a question and I need you advice if you don’t mind. I have the ADI2 DAC with RNHP amp driving the Aeon flow open/ Sennheiser HD650. I value timbre and tonality most and sometimes the ADI 2 can be a little flat if that makes sense despite that the amp that I have gave a definitely a more organic overall sound boost. If you would have to choose between new headphones or the Aries2 as an upgrade/experiment what would be your choice (best investment)? I wonder how much I will benefit from an organic sounding dac or move to something like ZMF headphones at 1K euro price point... Thank you in advance! Can’t wait for more videos to come.
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex, I'm glad you're liking the reviews! As for your question, if the HD650 is not providing enough character/depth then I think you definitely need to consider a different DAC. The Ares 2 is certainly going to provide a lot more space, but you're also going to lose a fair bit of resolution from what you're used to. That's not to say it's a bad choice - I just want to make sure you know the trade off. Other options that would help are the Bifrost 2 from Schiit and the Chord Qutest. Good luck! 🙂

Wow great review. Good comparisons with differences. A lot of reviews miss this important information. So does this dac improve the soundstage on your tube headphone amp? I’m after a dac with great detail and sound stage. I wonder if dacs make that much of a difference to tube amps.
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
Hi krmatiu, a tube amp should still be conveying what comes from the DAC (if it's doing its job right) so the Ares II will increase the perception of soundstage from a tube amp if the current DAC has a smaller presentation (which most do). As with all audio gear, the system will be limited by the weakest part of the chain so adding the Ares II to an amp with poor staging capabilities may be underwhelming, but if the amp is up to the task you should get great results

No problems! I would still expect benefits with a DAC of the Ares II quality compared to the D50S which is ok, but will be a bottleneck for the overall performance of your system compared to the Ares II. You may or may not get a bigger soundstage, but the note weight should improve and overall realism too. Of course, do keep in mind that if your system is already particularly warm or smooth, it might be too much of a good thing.

Hi, Super review! Im currently evaluating Bifrost Multibit/Bifrost 2 and Denafrips Ares II for my main 'music' listening setup (Marantz 6007 amp + PSB X2T Towers, currently using a topping with ESS9038q2 as dac in the chain) I mostly listen to easy vocals (Ella Fitzgerald), 60/70s rock (Floyd, Led Zepp) jazz, some classical and new age/electronic. Source is through PC based hi-res streaming (Tidal) and some cds. I have a high affinity/preference for smooth and open/airy midrange with precise deep bass and holographic imaging with wide soundstage. Looking for that 'in room presence', black background, rolled off/less sibilant top end with an overall smooth sound signature. In the Bifrost 2 review, you mentioned that the sense of space is higher with Ares II but bifrost has better resolution better. Most reviews of Denafrips mention that musicality, soundstage and holographic imaging qualities. They are around the same price point and offer all features (i need). Only plus i see for Denafrips is the higher bitrate conversion ability (beyond 24 bit 192) compared to Bifrost. The only flip side (rather tradeoff) is that Denafrips may not justice to most electronic music which requires slight more resolution that smoothness. You liked Bifrost more on most tracks than Denafrips (which might be a future possibility for me if i go for the Denafrips) I value your reviews/views enough to be confused between the 2 now :) This is quite a leap for me (as i was earlier considering choosing between the Chord Mojo or Modi Multibit) but realized might as well splurge and close the endless upgrade loop. Any chance you can get me out of this choice pickle!! Thanks mate :D

Hi Apurv, that's a tough decision based on your tastes. A couple of things to think about: 1) is high res really important to you? If you don't play anything outside of Tidal or standard FLAC then it's not an issue to worry about. If it IS very important to you then your decision is made for you 🙂 2) I would personally always choose the more resolving and natural sounding DAC because it is easy to adjust the sound with amps and headphones/speakers, but you can never get that resolution back is it's not there after the DAC. The Bifrost 2 isn't overly sharp or edgy in any way. It's resolving and detailed, but I don't think you'll have troubles with it needing rolling off or smoothing. The Ares II probably fits your description of what you want for some of the jazz and similar music, but I do think you might feel a lack of energy when it comes to electronic music so unless you have other gear in your chain that really needs taming, I think the B2 is probably the better all around choice.

I wonder how the Denafrips Venus would compare to the Chord Hugo TT2 regarding soundquality, analogueness etc. I wonder because I tested the Ares 2 and the Qutest... and I was impressed how well the Ares2 did sound for less money. @PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rhino, that's an interesting question. Based on my recollection of the ADI-2 (and not direct comparison to the Ares II), I think you'd be trading off resolution for smoothness/naturalness. The ADI-2 is very resolving, but it's also slightly clinical/edgy. The Ares II has zero edge and it creates a very rich and engaging sound, but it comes at the cost of lost detail. I found that the Ares II is best with classical music because it does space so well which suits large orchestral pieces. It's not as well suited to rock, blues, pop, etc. because they rely on the rhythm and texture more to create engagement. Not sure if that helps - hopefully it does. If you're not in a huge hurry, maybe wait for my review of the Schiit Bifrost 2 before purchasing. It's early days, but I'm liking what I'm hearing!

Hi Armando, thanks for your support! I haven't yet heard the Pontus so I can't say for sure if what you've heard is true. What I can say is that the Ares is definitely one of the smoothest and warmest DACs I've ever heard. Two options spring to mind: 1) keep the DAC if you're happy with it or (2) buy the Pontus with the knowledge that you might need to change your amp (I assume the Klipschs are passive speakers?) to something a bit warmer. The benefit of upgrading the DAC is that you can increase resolution and then adjust the tonality/colouration with a different amp, but that's an investment of course so depends on your appetite for the expense. Can I ask what you're wanting to achieve with the upgrade to the Pontus?

But never before have I really been able to just turn the volume up on the Utopias and get sucked in. Admittedly - a little less punch and incisiveness, but the stage is deeper, more holographic, and instruments sound more real, more corporeal, the sound sounds full as opposed to hollow. I'll paste in below some comments I've made elsewhere in hope they help others watching this video thinking about purchasing this DAC: 1. OS mode with the Slow filter is the way to go. I could see myself sporadically using the NOS mode but only if I wanted to chill out, relax, or listen to music in the background without being moved by it. Otherwise it's just not enough in terms of impact, separation and detail. 2. First thing that struck me was the soundstage holography and depth - the opposite of the D90 which puts everything right in front of me. Ares II pushes music slightfly further away from me, presenting it on a bigger and deeper stage which makes everything sound more like a live performance as opposed to listening to a record. 3. Everything sounds smoother whilst still being clean and quite detailed. I am finding myself being able to listen at higher volumes without being attacked by any harshness (bear in mind that amp volume needs to be higher anyway as the Ares II is quieter than the D90). 4. For anything with real instruments, especially more relaxed tracks - Ares II makes it sound more interesting and more believable than the D90. 5. For everything requiring direct in-your-face impact, I think the D90 still hits a bit harder and can be addictive in its detail, accuracy and speed. Having said that... 6. The more time I spend with the Ares II, the more difficult it is to return to the D90 because, as someone has mentioned elsewhere, it feels a bit like going from listening to a performance to listening to a recording. 7. Ares II turns my Utopia into an easier-to-listen-to headphone, it seems to have a similar effect on the HD800 (the soundstage gets even bigger!). However, the HE1000se does not seem to have a particularly good synergy with it, I think it's because of the nature of the planar driver and its already softer/more laid-back presentation. The Ares II feels like a bit of overkill whilst the D90 gives this particular headphone the punch it needs. It's the other way round with the Utopia. Very, very interesting... :)

Thanks for sharing your impressions and for testing it out for yourself! So glad you've had the chance to experience the differences first hand! Synergy is definitely a big part of it, but your comment about the realism of instruments from the Ares II is spot on compared to the D90 IME

@@PassionforSound Were you able to test the Ares II with different amps? Apparently, its output impedance is very high, my only amp is the Topping A90 whose input impedance is in turn exceptionally low. On paper, this is not a good pairing and perhaps explains why this DAC sounds "softer" than the D90 (despite having a way bigger sounstage and truly fascinating holography). The Ares's RCA output apparently has a lower impedance, so I'm going to get a pair of RCA cables to see if that makes any difference (been using XLR so far). I'm wondering if this issue is real and if a different amp altogether should be used with this DAC (I hope not...).

I don't recall now which amps I used it with. I did have the A90 back then, but I don't recall what else I had. The impedance issues could cause the softness too so it's possible that was a factor, but I can't confirm because I don't remember 100%

An interesting thing I find about R2R DACs (may not apply to the Ares II, but I own a Musician Pegasus), is that when you turn it on and start listening to it - you might feel that its not actually that striking or impressive sounding. The stage is definitely wide and open, but you're not hit with that clarity and dynamics you get from D/S. Looking at it critically, the background can sound a bit 'grey', the edges of transients feel rolled off - its not 'HiFi' like we imagine it to be. But the sound is presented in a way where once you get past that analytical side of your brain trying to parse what is good and bad about the characteristics of the sound, you can just listen and comfortably enjoy music for hours one song after another. Interestingly enough, I find that I often don't listen to music from start to finish, or I might skip sections more on a D/S DAC, while on my R2R DAC I will just click through and absorb the songs, and might even just let it go play whatever it finds and enjoy it. I feel like R2R DAC's just have this ability to draw attention away from themselves and let you just enjoy the music for what it is, while D/S DACs are going to highlight everything there is to hear and draw more attention to themselves in a 'HiFi experience' way.

I definitely agree about the comparison between R2R and regular DS DACs. I have briefly listened to the Pegasus and while I can't compare it directly to the Ares II, I feel like it's less rounded off than the Ares II. I personally like Chord and Schiit Multibit DACs slightly more than the R2R options I've tried so far, but I think I'm with you in preferring R2R over regular DS DACs as a general rule. Thank you so much for your response which I really appreciate. The Loxjie is a really great product; I went from the Khadas to the D30 and my impressions were that the sound produced with the Loxie is definitely warmer, fuller, less metallic, cleaner and more detailed than the Khadas with the bass present; I distinctly noticed details that before and in complex songs, the instruments are very well separated. I like a bold presentation, with life, fun, strength, impact, open and bright high frequencies, half detailed that snare drum sounds strong, low frequencies with authority and glued in drum bass drum. Make it all sound big. I was almost about to buy RME, because with its equalizer in theory I could configure that sound signature to my liking. Of those three dacs from which would you get that presentation the most? Would you recommend any other ones for that signature?

Hi Erick, thanks for subscribing! For your described preference, I think the D90 or ADI-2 would be a good choice, BUT I think you should also check out this weekend's review for the DAC I'd choose over both of those... The D90 is a little more refined than the ADI-2 which will work better for brighter systems, but the ADI-2 has much greater control through its EQ, crossfeed, etc. The other DAC I'm reviewing on Saturday is the Schiit Bifrost 2 and it's the perfect balance of the Ares II R2R sound and the ADI-2/D90 detail. It's very basic - no pre-amp, EQ, etc. but it's sensational for sound quality.

Hi Joshua, I've found that a few DS DACs are better with DSD, but it's the minority. Most of the time, they're comparable with PCM and DSD. It's just something I like to test and it seemed to show differences on the R2R circuit. I don't know that DSD is inherently better. I think I've heard DSD sound better than PCM, but never heard PCM sound better than DSD, but it's a very minor and difference and depends on the DAC. The biggest issues with DSD for me are file size and availability

I have a question regarding all this discussion on dac’s lately (especially delta sigma vs R2R). Do reviewers not put too much emphasis on comparing the Dacs standalone? After seeing a video of Thomas and Stereo I was reminded again on the impact of matching and pairing and the importance of the preamp in the signal path. So would the combination of a good delta sigma Dac with a smooth and airy sounding (tube like) preamp not give you best of both worlds? In particular a preamp that allows you to change opamps? I think this actually is how most integrated amp manufacturers in the HiFi world work, they never use R2R (to my knowledge). And I also think this is how Burson has developed there top of the line integrated Dac/preamp/headphone amp (Conductor series), which uses the ESS9038. On their website Burson claims the following: “Some DAC/Amps claim to give you the front row experience in exchange for less soundstage. Others promise a 3D soundstage in trade for fewer details. The Conductor 3 Performance simply gives you everything in the recording, without sugar-coating, the good and sometimes the ugly.” My current thoughts are that the RME ADI-2 / Burson Soloist combo might actually give me best of both worlds. Because you get all the EQ features from the RME, including the neutral headphone outs for analytical listening and than you connect the Soloist as perfect (pre)amp to balance out the soundstage and smooth things out for enjoyment listening on both headphones and speakers. I would be very much interested to see if that combo would be similar in performance to the Conductor series and also if the Conductor can live up to its expectation set by the manufacturer. From what I have read so far, that might be the case. Also from an economical point of view the RME/soloist combo would be the ideal solution, because in a few years time you could replace the RME when technology and dac chips advances and add new op amps to the Solist when they improve. I will be receiving the RME for tryout later today :)! I currently still use the Aune Magic X8 dac which also has this swappable opamp functionality.
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
There's definitely a lot to be said for synergy, but with SO many variables, I don't think reviewers can possibly make clear cut recommendations. For example, I might recommend a combo based on listening with my Meze Empyreans, but what if you have HD800s? Or the original Beyer T1? You may need a vastly different setup based on every element in your sound chain. I think it's best that reviewers stick to standalone reviews, ideally with comparisons for context. After that each person needs to work out what their tastes are and therefore which piece of the puzzle is right for them next.

Up to yesterday I was under the impression that I had to chose between either a delta sigma or R2R dac and that I had to live with the downsides of either (or go for a much more expensive DAC). But actually my conclusion is that apparently there is a lot you can do in the preamp stage (so not talking about power amp or speakers/headphones here) to overcome most of the shortcomings in terms of holographic soundstage, imaging and smoothness of the presentation (without losing detail), which seems to be a much more (cost) effective solution and therefore very relevant to this whole DAC discussion. It actually made me understand the relevance of the opamp switching function on my Aune X8 dac. Based on this reasoning I actually think that the renewed interest in R2R dacs is more a hype created on KZbin channels because people are focussing to much standalone sound of the dacs and somewhere along the line lost the knowledge and benefit of a good preamp for this exact purpose, especially in the head-fi space. Maybe I am completely wrong, but seeing that realisation moment yesterday confirmed on the website of Burson today, just confirmed my believe. I off course need to try it out for myself, but provided you also will get the Soloist this is something that you also could consider to add for future video’s, hence my question and contribution. This is not in any way meant as criticism, because you do excellent reviews and I know your knowledge is growing quickly with each review.

All fair points, Gerard, and no offense taken. I really like Burson as a brand and Alex, who I deal with, is a great guy, but do beware that each company has their own explanations to justify their own philosophies and they often contradict one another. For example, Rob Watts will say that his WTA filters and FPGA are the only way to correctly do D/A converting. Burson will tell you that it's fine to be limited by integrated chip-based designs because you can pick up the slack with the amp, and Schiit sit somewhere in between with a mixture of chip-based, Multibit, integrated outputs and discrete outputs all depending on the price point. What all this means to me is that we as consumers have to each decide what resonates with us and to find the best possible solution for our tastes and with our available budget. It's all great conversation and I appreciate you sharing your journey (and take no offense). The biggest thing I've learned over the 18+ years I've been involved in the hobby and industry is that we need to trust our ears and our tastes first and foremost while still having an open mind to explore the claims of manufacturers and opinions of others.

Strange question but- where do you get your instrumental music for portions of your videos ?

Hi Daniel, it all comes from Epidemic Sound and there's a link in the video description of you want to go and check out the platform. 🙂

I wish Amazon sold the Denafrips, but it seems to only be available in Singapore. To much of a hassle for me in the US. Looks like the Topping stack is still my first pick.

Hi Brian, there will be a local supplier I expect, but I'm not sure. Before deciding on which DAC to buy, wait for this week's reviews... it's Schiit Week!

@@PassionforSound I look forward to your Schiit video. Right now you have me convinced on the Topping stack still. Schiit stack is cheaper, but can it compete with Topping? I’ll definitely stay tuned in.

Not sure yet which amp I'd buy, but the DAC choice would be easy for me... 😉

@@PassionforSound This is why I’m watching as many videos as I can. I’m buying my Amp and Dac this month. But so far, your Topping stack video is in the lead for my money. Looking for the best pair with my 800s. Thanks again for all your replies, as I said you seem to be the only one that is helpful.

With HD800s, I'd probably lean towards the Topping stack myself. Otherwise, the Bifrost 2 and Asgard 3 from Schiit are excellent, but the Asgard 3 is probably a little less revealing than the A90 - I haven't checked yet to confirm.

Compare the Ares 2 vs Pontus please!!! Thanks

Hi Jordi, I can't promise this because I rely on either buying or getting products on loan so to have both the Ares II and Pontus at the same time is unlikely. What I can do is compare the Pontus (when I get it on loan) to the same DACs I've compared the Ares II to so at least there are some consistent benchmarks.

IMHO if you are after the most realistic, natural sound out of the Ares II -then go NOS all the way :D Pianos and horns just sound more like they are in the room with me.

Interesting. I found the NOS too smoothed off and lacking in resolution
