The player Lebron is talking to at 0:25 is Lenny Cooke. He was actually the #2 ranked high school player in the country at that camp ahead of Lebron (Melo was ranked #1). He was projected by several sources to be a sure 1st round draft pick out of high school but due to a reported attitude and work ethic problem, he went undrafted, revoking his college eligibility in the process. He accepted a 350k advance from an agent to represent him for the draft during his senior year, leading many to believe the main cause for his attitude problem as he acted as though he already made it and could do whatever he pleased. He played in the D league and the Celtics summer league team before finishing out his career overseas. Truly a sad story as he had the skills and potential to be great.

Craziest part about this is that LeBron led the state in receiving touchdowns the year before and then quit football. He would have broke all of the nfl receiving records if he stuck with football, there’s no doubt. I worked for the Orlando magic for a decade and one of my co-workers graduated from SVSM with him. So whenever Cleveland would play us(we had some heated playoff games) LeBron would make time to talk to and hang out with us. Once he was lifting weights but not really lifting, just kinda seeing how much he could lift. He put 315 on the bar and benched it 10x like it was 150 lbs. To this day, I believe there is no better athlete in the world than a SG or SF in the NBA. Hes just was bigger, stronger, AND faster than EVERYONE else.

@@AveMcree Rashad Carruth was actually class of 2001. I was living in Columbus OH at that time. Lebron had gotten publicity around Ohio when his team won a state championship his freshman year (2000) - Maverick Carter was the star but LeBron got a lot of buzz. The SI cover and ESPN stuff didn't happen until his junior year, but it all started to build when he was a sophomore. I was at Battelle Hall when Oak Hill (with Rashad Carruth, Desagna Diop, and Billy Edelin) played SVSM. Oak Hill narrowly won, but it was crystal clear to everyone that LeBron was by far the best player on the court. Even as a sophomore, he was physically mature and his game was incredibly mature. That night it wasn't obvious that LeBron would become arguably the NBA GOAT, but it was plain as day that he would never set foot on a college campus.

Powe had a dunk at Gym Rats Midnight Madness - in South Jersey - where he took the kid up with him, the dude hanging on him, and hammered it down. One of the first times I'd seen a high schooler dunk with a player trying to pull him away from dunking; went up like the hanger on wasn't even there. He was a high school junior at the time. He had NBA size, strength and athletic ability as a high school underclassman. Also dominating at ABCD.

I was there watching this. Had no idea who he was. Happened to be talking to a guy from Western Pennsylvania who told me he was second or third team All-State Ohio in football(fact). I asked him what college is he looking at. Then he told me he was only a sophomore and probably won’t play football anymore. I almost fell over. Can’t say I knew he’d do all of this. But I did realize he was not just another great high school player…

thats a pretty cool story. The amazing thing is, maybe Lebron could have become the greatest football player ever. Who the heck is gonna stop a a 6'8 receiver with elite speed and athleticism. I cant imagine any cornerback being able to guard him. Even guys 6'5 are hard enough to stop.

He wasn't discovered so much as the summer after his soph year he led the usa U17 team to gold at the Pan American games(named mvp) then got invited to MJ's summer league in Chicago and nba players were saying he could play in the nba already. That is when the hype really started and then he got on the cover of SI shortly after.

@@spenser6353 Check the Cavs' payroll in LeBron's last 4-5 years there. They had a top 3 payroll every season and they had plenty of good players like Antawn Jamison, Larry Hughes, Mo Williams. Ben Wallace, Shaq, Ilgauskas, Varejao played there as well and they were still somewhat useful (keep in mind Shaq was coming off a resurgent season with the Suns). Boobie was not even a top 5 player on the Cavs. Stop being revisionist.
