37th Like. I was one of the first people to get a Heritage 2 The "H" in the side was very deeply scooped out of the side and it affected the mouthpiece so you got a different response depending what way round the mouthpiece was. They changed that just to make it engraved like yours. They are all gold plated now by the way, but there is a lot of old stock around.

Thanks Gordon. Pretty cool that you were one of the first to try a Heritage! I find it amusing that the engraving made such a difference. Also, I think it’s shame they’ve switched to all-gold. I think the H blank looks best with mixed plating…

I’m currently on a mouthpiece safari after getting a Bach 184L, I had been playing a Mercer & Barker MB4-JS but that is a deep piece with a huge throat. Currently trialing a Curry 6BBC and have a Heritage 3B on the way this week. I’d also be interested to see what you think of the new Yamaha Neo mouthpieces if you ever get your hands on one of those.

@@davidfern1123 I totally get the safari. What doesn’t help is that, while it plays easily and lyrically, the Bach 184 is naturally a very bright cornet and your mouthpiece choice will likely have to counteract that to some extent. I’ve never looked into the M&B line so I can’t speak on that, but the BBC and 3B-H are definitely good options. As for Yamaha, I really liked the 16E short-shank I got from them a few years ago (although the DW2B was a little better for my sound and blow), but I do imagine the Neo pieces are different, so I can’t speak on those. You might consider adding a short shank 13E or 14E to your search. Very affordable and well worth trying.

I have a Heritage 2 that's brighter than you might expect. I find it a little imbalanced and unstable. I'm currently trying to acclimatise to a 4B as it's what my section mates play. Results are mixed so far. It's not as nice as a no letter for playing a lyrical solo but it is a lot less work in the pop, rock and swing numbers. It initially felt stuffy and rough but you expect that coming from a no letter. I think I need to spend more time with it.

Interesting perspective-I’ve rarely heard of no-letter Heritages being used. I wonder if the cup being so deep causes that imbalance when you manufacture one with a Heritage blank. I guess we’ll see how my H2B compares to my standard 2B when the former arrives. That 4B is probably the most popular mouthpiece in DW’s line, but I probably wouldn’t use it myself. I really do like the sound that my John Packer-made Wick 4B clone sounded, but that ID just doesn’t really work for me.
@musicalcubes
@musicalcubes 16 күн бұрын
Compared to my standard 4 it feels more difficult to control and doesn't have that smoothness. Could be an ID thing, a rim thing... you name it. The H2 is pretty though. The JP4B is surprisingly good. Mine's kinda 7C-like with a bitey rim and smaller ID than my other ones. The cup is deeper but the bore/backbore are tighter. My guess is they engineered it to be easy for learners to play on. I have 2 DW4Bs, one vintage, one modern. I seem to like the vintage one more. There isn't much appreciable difference between them but it just seems to play that little bit easier.

I bought Heritage 2B mouthpiece to try out last year. I loved the response but the sound was way too bright for me. I was playing a Pickett 1.25 British. Now I am playing a Mercer Barker MBJS-4.

I’m curious to know if you’ve played a standard blank 2B? I’d be very surprised if a Wick B cup in general was “way too bright” for you, but I guess everybody plays differently.

I have a Cornet Denis Wick 2BW which I can now play fairly well in the upper register, on a good day up to C above staff. I would like to find a flugelhorn mouthpiece that is the same shape as this one. I have already tried DW 4FL and 3FL and they are great at lip flexibility but not upper range for me. DW doesn’t seem to have a W for flugelhorn. Any help would be hugely welcome as it’s a nightmare trying to find the right mouthpiece!!!

If I were you, I’d consider looking into a flugel mouthpiece from Austin Custom Brass. I bought one with my ACB Doubler (specifically the 1.25CMDF) at their recommendation. I do VERY poorly with wide rims. Compared to a Bach 1.25, the ACB 1.25 had a lot wider/flatter of a rim contour and seemingly a smaller inner diameter. It did not work at all for me. However, I suspect such a rim would work for you, and the CMDF cup (“medium depth flugel”) would probably provide a little more high register support than the rather cavernous Wick FL.

@@SamuelPlaysBrass Thanks for getting back to me so quickly Samuel. I’ve never considered ACB so that’s really interesting. Will need to see if they ship to UK. 🎺🇬🇧

My personal preference would be for the Yamahas, but my answer to your question is not relevant or productive to your needs. That is a question that will completely vary from player to player.

@@SamuelPlaysBrass Appreciate that, thank you. I have the opportunity to purchase one, however, "unplayed" due to being such a distance from them all. To be played at military funerals and special events (Australia) and for personal pleasure and then one day pass onto my children.
