You can move the rock for a bit and lay this black sheeting that is “weed barrier” then relay the stone, and cut holes into the sheeting wherever you want to plant something. That avoids all that weeding
@philipbrazis8732
@philipbrazis8732 3 жыл бұрын
That will last only for awhile the weeds will eventually come up through it

It depends on the quality and thickness of the weed barrier; Walmart vs commercial barrier material. I think it is worth the cost to save the labor. It also depends on how thick your bedding material is. We would put in several inches of mulch and any weeds that happened to make it to the top were easy to remove when they were just peeking thru. Just be sure to get the roots also.

Weeds will win that battle every time, speaking from experience! The rocks will need to be removed and cleaned first. Then set them aside while you dig down an inch or so to level out the bed. Next, it’s important to put some kind of metal, stone, or concrete edging in to keep out grass and to give the bed a clean, professional look. Put down a weed barrier of some type, cut holes in to install your plants, then cover with 2-3” of rocks (you’ll need to buy more). You be pleased with the results and it’ll save you hours of backbreaking work in the future.

Yeah and I especially like the white rocks. They balance perfectly against all the black. It gives such a clean yet relaxed vibe. I hope she takes your advice. They really do need that weed barrier.

Wow! Your porch looks amazing. The cedar cladding is a game changer! Love seeing your kiddos laughing and playing. I vote for replacing the rocks with mulch. Maybe someone who needs rocks would come remove them for free? Then, amend the soil, put down weed blocker cloth, add the mulch and make a nice crisp edge to the bed.

I'm so glad you framed out the posts with trim - it really finishes them off. I second someone else's comment about installing a weed membrane under the rocks, and I think it would look really crisp if you edged the borders so the white rocks (or mulch) doesn't spill into the grass - wood to match the posts would look amazing, or flexible steel edging to complement the modern look! Well done on all your hard work xxx

Spread a weed and feed product in the rocks. Also suggest that after you get the rocks, you can put a preemergent like preen down. Both work but your plants will need to be in pots. Look for large bowl shaped planters. They are very modern and would be beautiful in black.

Re using weed barrier, I recently had a consultation with an eco/ polinator garden pro who nixed using it as it eventually breaks down and just adds micro plastic to our environment. She advised a deep layer of gravel. This is for an area between a huge rhododenron and my house where I'm trying to stop ferns from growing uninvited and to keep moisture to a minimum. I would not use stone for mulch in any flower bed. Natural mulch more plant and human friendly. You are certainly an energetic couple! I liked the stencil a lot. Would have kept the mat simpler. Maybe just the lettering a bit larger. Less is more, but I bet the kids like it. You are an inspiration. I just hired someone to rebuild my front porch. $$$$ Great when you can do your own work.

If you pull all of the rock up and lay down yard fabric cloth, cut and place it around your plantings, it will prevent a lot of weeds from growing. Plus if you make a sharp nice edge border it will make the area look really good. Then put either your rock or mulch on top of the fabric. The mulch needs to be at least 4" thick to prevent the weeds. The rock should be around 3-4" thick. I'm a landscape owner and that is what will prevent the weed from growing. You might get an occasional weed but not as many as you would with the landscape fabric and the thickness from the mulch/rock.

Pull or rake the white rock forward and have it be a border between grass and your planting area and then use bark mulch in the planting area. I really love your flower bed with the white rocks. I had the same thing and I know it can be very frustrating, the weeds but I fixed it. I saw a video on HGTV and what they done was dig up all your rocks put cardboard lay it down first and then put the rocks back on top and then put your plants in cut holes and and it keeps the weeds from coming up through them and it works really really great. Also, your beds are really really big if you want to make them a little bit more narrow And put edging across the front and let the grass grow up to where the other was there to help out with the weeds and all the time you spent digging up weeds the same problem I made Manns a little bit more narrow I made them no more about 12 inches from the house out and that’s it.
