its called a grey because yes the fur is white, but their skin is still black like most horses, they all start off with one of the 3 base coats (black, bay or chestnut) and will begin to 'grey out', causing them to be dapple greys. Eventually they will have completely white fur but their skin is black. Pure white horses are extremely rare (not cremello or perlino) and they are born with white hair and pink skin instead of starting off dark and gradually fading.
