Dude, this was great. Solved a huge headache I was having. I am modeling a TV monitor and the back has a lot of complex curves, and some of them are wider than others. Really, thank you so much, God bless you, and you have a new subscriber!

I also tried the crease set modifier in conjuction with OpenSubdiv but as you can see the edges aren't beveled and the highlights also don't look good to me. For me it works best when I use Turbosmooth with smoothing groups and then I just bevel the edges on top of the subdivided mesh. There is also a chamfer modifier where you can always adjust the radius of your chamfers or the iterations and some other settings which comes very handy once you're not happy with the result.
@DenisKeman9 жыл бұрын
+Geworg Hovhannisyan I'm not saying you are wrong or anything, especially since i work with the Turbosmooth modifier myself, but the point of this video was to simply show you another way of doing it and not force you to do it that way.
@JusTChiLLah9 жыл бұрын
+Denis Keman Nothing personal I was just sharing my opinion. It's always good to learn new things and enhance your skills. I found the proboolean instruction very helpful since I've been trying to avoid it. Now I can use it in certain situations which would make my life much easier.

How would you "bake" this effect into the final object regarding the need to export it for other applications? Does this work only in max or can I export a .fbx and import it in maya with maintaining the mesh shape?
@DenisKeman8 жыл бұрын
If you want to "bake" the effect you need to collapse the stack. Then you can export as FBX or whatever else you might want

+CHL3488 I don't think you can have it in Max 2014 .. it's either SP2 2015 or the 2016 version of the program
@DanFrederiksen9 жыл бұрын
It's pretty good but I think your channel will be infinitely more effective and popular if you edit down and plan for editing down. So you skip all the search for how to say things. One way to do it is narrate as you record and then jump cut very effectively with voice over. You can try modifying for instance this video. This video could be as short as 30 seconds and be more powerful.
@DenisKeman9 жыл бұрын
+Dan Frederiksen I get where you are coming from, but the template that i chose to follow is one where i actually go a bit more in depth and try to give you a more of a hands on approach as to what you can expect in terms of problems that can come up and more importantly how to fix those problems, and it's kinda hard to do then in the 20 min mark that i usually like to keep the videos in and let alone make them shorter. As for the editing part i totally agree with you, but the issue i have is time as this is not something i do commercially, and if i switch over and start making this for a living then you can expect some fancy editing and cutting and narrating over the video, but until then i'm afraid you are all stuck listening to me on the long haul :) Thanks for your input though, much appreciated.
@DanFrederiksen9 жыл бұрын
+Denis Keman you could make half as many videos if time was the real reason. Concision strikes a chord.
@0myutube8 жыл бұрын
+Denis Keman I think the speed works... Just hitting on exactly what steps to take is like watching cliff notes or Autodesk videos... Not as nice. Good job.

John Salisz Like i did say previously i do prefer to explain what the options do instead of just making a video in which i tell you which buttons to push :)
@shaunfontaine86878 жыл бұрын
+Dan Frederiksen +Dan Frederiksen Dan he didn't ask for your advice and a lot of people like how in-depth he goes. I would hate to watch this in condensed 30 second snippets. Plus I don't think you have the right to tell him how to run his channel considering your last video upload was 3 years ago. It's always the people without a good channel telling others how to run theirs.

@Linkitch9 жыл бұрын
+Visceral3D Pretty sure it's included in 2016 by default and in 2014 and 2015 you have to download extra service packs to get them.
@DenisKeman9 жыл бұрын
Linkitch I'm pretty sure you are right
@Visceral3D9 жыл бұрын
Yeah i just treid it out on 2016 its there. Going to do a whole lot of expoermenting to see if its viable replacement for the old turbosmooth control loops method.

does zbrush support opensubdiv?
@DenisKeman8 жыл бұрын
+Numan Salati What exactly do you mean does ZBrush support opensubdiv .. when you get the model into ZBrush it will inherit the shape of the exported model, and what OpenSubDiv does is basically move the edges around so you get sharper edges after the smoothing. So basically like if you want to get sharper edges but instead of adding new geometry you simply move the adjacent edges after the turbosmooth modifier with the help of a edit poly modifier.
@ikbo8 жыл бұрын
+Denis Keman What I mean is does the divide in zbrush use the same algorithm as opensubdiv? That way you could import/export in both directions from max to zbrush and have no issues with creasing, smoothing etc.

Hi, you know i see that the chamfer is not so good there as when we use Turbosmooth? Expecially on a top of cylinder. She looks like sharper. It is not good effect :(
@DenisKeman9 жыл бұрын
+Ебурдей Гордеич TurboSmooth is still the way that i choose to model simply because it gives me unparalleled control over the edge sharpness and look. This video was just to show everyone that there is another way to do it if they choose to do it, or if they can't allow to use extra geometry (which the TurboSmooth brings to the game)
@EburdeyGordei49 жыл бұрын
Denis Keman Hm, how do you think statistically is the most 3d-modellers in 2016 choose OpenSubdiv or Turbosmooth?
@DenisKeman9 жыл бұрын
+Ебурдей Гордеич My bet would be on the Turbosmooth as it relies on geometry manipulation opposed to leaving Max to determine the sharpness automatically by moving the already existing geometry. I might be wrong, but i doubt it :)
@DenisKeman8 жыл бұрын
***** Same with me, i do prefer using Turbosmooth and edge loops for defining the edges but bare in mind OpenSubDiv is pretty new so it might take up some time before people start using it, if they ever start using it that is

why are they two different modifiers? they should be a single one
@DenisKeman8 жыл бұрын
+thePoxxxx Autodesk loves splitting their modifiers in one version of the program, and then they go ahead and merge it into a new one and at the same time leave the two separate ones as well. It's simply how they roll :)

do we have to have you remind yourself that the opensubdiv is adding no more extra geometry? with the heavy breathing it all sounds and feels very stressful.

cool to watch.. i cringed when you capped the cylinder with that method. A flat 8 ngon face cut into 4 slices is a better method if subdivision is going to be used because all the vertex weighs would spread out equally.

I've had that same cringe when rewatching some of my older videos but then again when recording you don't really notice it :)
