Having used the current crossing with vehicle and train multiple times, it makes complete sense to put a tunnel in. Connecting the hubs of Hamburg and Copenhagen makes complete sense and ties in nicely with the Baltic Highway project too.
@Real_MisterSir2 жыл бұрын
Indeed. Using it every year, making a direct transport line from Hamburg (and other merging parts of Europe) directly to Copenhagen, Malmö, etc would not just ease traffic and help the environment, it would also increase business potential because you no longer have to factor in +30% fuel expenses for the increased distance it would take to travel through mainland Denmark first (or the wait and travel time with boat which on average would be 1 hour ish).

I feel like this tunnel will be great for bringing Scandinavia closer to continental Europe! Especially considering the huge success that the Öresund Bridge between Copenhagen and Malmö has been - despite some initial scepticism, I don't think anyone in the region could imagine being without it now. All that's really missing when the Fehmarn Tunnel is completed is a tunnel between Elsinore and Helsingborg at the northern end of the Öresund Strait to cut the travel times between continental Europe and the Scandinavian Peninsula even more. I am very much looking forward to doing day trips from southern Sweden down to Hamburg in the future!

Good information, well presented. Subscribed for more. In 2015 we took the train ferry from Rødby in Denmark to Puttgarden in Germany, on our way to Lübeck and Hamburg. It was quite an experience, everyone has to disembark from the train during the passage. Later on that trip we did the Channel Tunnel on our way to London. Maybe we will live long enough to do this new tunnel in ten years, although that old clock keeps ticking. That 2015 was our 50th anniversary trip, seven weeks across the Atlantic, northern Europe, and back across the Atlantic, both ways by ship. It is good that Germany and Denmark have forward thinking leadership on infrastructure. Would that we had such leadership here in USA, where, frankly, things are just crumbling left and right.

I worked for Rambøll, the engineering company that did the calculations for the tunnel. They worked at the same time as the bridge solution, it was back in 2008. Both proposals was argued but a bridge was never decided, only the connection was agreed with the Germans. The solution chosen was the tunnel. As you say, lower impact on environment, and the tunnel will never close due to bad weather. The only reason a tunnel could be made without islands for fresh air, is because the emissions from cars are so low now. So 15 years ago, the emissions was too high, and a lot of air refreshing systems had to be installed, and even a fresh air island in the middle of the tunnel.

@SteelRodent The Danish government owns Femern A/S, they do not run it. The problem with public projects today is that they set completely unrealistic expectations in terms of cost while at the same time continually outsourcing in accordance with neoliberal ideology that makes an expansive economic policy almost impossible. As for the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel, the delays are primarily due to appeals from German environmental organisations and the more decentralized German federation that makes protracting the process much easier. The Danish unitary state doesn't really have the same problem so even if there is some local opposition to the project (on the Danish side), they don't have a lot of power to prevent it.

Well, the ferry ride itself is 45 minutes. But every single time I've been waiting for the ferry to arrive another hour passes just waiting in line to drive onto the ferry. So the entire crossing plus the usual waiting time is often up to 2 hours in total. 10 minute drive in a tunnel to get to Germany from Denmark or a 2 hour wait+crossing? A vast difference. As for the ferries. They will still remain for all those who want a cheaper option and to rest and take a break on a ship. The ferries didn't disappear when the channel tunnel was opened between Britain and France. Sure they won't need as many ferries as they need today but there's bound to be travelers who can spare the time and take a break.

The bridge between Denmark and Sweden has already been paid off (considering amount of money earned from the toll) much quicker than anticipated. and so will this tunnel. But just think of the implication /benefits. ppl can work in Germany or vice verse and be home much quicker than having to wait for the ferry.

@@SandwichMitGurke Agreed. Imagine if a private corporation did this. Shareholders would actually stop being angry because they'd forget. Then suddenly, there's a bridge that's actually a tunnel, and shareholders going either: "Wait, who asked for this, and how much did it cost?" Or "So, are we still doing the bridge? Seems a bit redundant now." I also remember Danes talking about the 'bridge' and how its either nice, or a waste of money, or convenient - depending on who you talked to. Actually forgot about it until the video, I guess i just assumed it was canceled since it's been a decade and there's still no bridge.

There will always be people who see something bad in everything new. We have it at Storebaetsbroen, Øresundsbroen yes every single bridge that Denmark has built in the last 100 years and there are many in such a small country. In fact, offshore wind turbines can not even be set up without complaints from high and low. I do not know if I will be able to see the Femern Sund connection finished, but heck, how proud I am that my small country - even though Germany was a big block around the leg - can now finally build the world's longest tunnel and make the connection easier for transport throughout Europe.

Wasn't the only reason tbh. There were several setbacks, due to Germany originally being more involved in the beginning, but lost public interest in the project and backing out. Forcing the Danish government to find the funds themselves. Several environmental surveys needed to be done, after there were claims of tampering and low quality work with the first reports. Environmental groups also made claims, that had to be studied too. All small things adding up to huge delays.

I worked in the tug industry, can confirm this, barely any Danish ships are to be used, especially Tug boats, the current tugs that will be used are from the Netherlands and England, they don't even live up to the Danish maritime restrictions. A Multicat as shown on the live broadcast requires extremely expensive modifications to be legally used in Denmark, which is why there is only very few with 24h crews in Denmark. The law would require the ships to adjust to Danish standards once they have been doing work in Danish territory for a said period of time, but due to lack of resources in the Danish Maritime Department, they can't enforce this part of the law.
