I was born in Denmark but my family moved to Canada when I was 5 (my dad sold furniture for Fritz Hansen). My mom grew up working class in Copenhagen and was old enough to remember and tell me about seeing Christian X on his daily ride in the city. One story (possibly a folk tale) I heard on a tour of the Rundetårn (Round Tower) was that once The Danish King and Russian Czar stood at the top looking out at the city. The Czar bragged that he could order any of his subjects to jump off the tower and they would. The Danish King's reply was that he could lay down and sleep with his head on the lap of any Dane and know that he would wake up alive. Love trumps fear.

it is partly a folktale, they did have discussion of relative power and the fear of god and man,, Frederiks answer where that his people might not fear him like Peters people did him, but that he (Frederik) didn't need to fear his people either.

A few month ago, there was a short story on danish TV, about two little boys 5 or 6 years of age, who visited the yard of the castle, with their dad, to see the castle and they both was wearing homemade royal guard uniforms, marching back and forth, pretending to be guards. Crownprins Frederik saw that from the windows and he went down, wityh a big and warm smile, he was thanking the little boys for taking extra good care of him that day. I just love that about him. :)

Another interesting fact is that, prince Karl, as you mentioned became the Norwegian king Haakon 7 of Norway, actually refused to take the title unless there was a referendum in Norway showing, that the people actually wanted him to be king.

As a former royal guard I know I might be biased, but there's a moment which really showcases Crownprince Frederik's humbleness, or " down-to-earthness" that still sticks with me. It's four year's ago, so details may be fuzzy, but it was night ( I remember wearing the night hat) and guarding Christian IIX palace kitchen gate when I recogniced his voice asking a servant on his way home how his sick son was doing. It really stuck with me.

The Royal family (especially the line of succession) is one bad incident of corruption/cruelty/immorality away from even put the most liked monarchy in jeopardy. Not many that is why it is a good story, they are under a constant test of their character.

The Danish Royal family is our faces to the outside world, and they do a great job of promoting Denmark. They are well educated enough that they can keep thair own in any situation, but down to earth enough that they can talk to people from all walks of life. When the crown price was young he ended up in the news more than once for driving too fast and escaping his guard, they would later find him at the Agreed upon place, relaxing and laughing with the Danish people. 😂 (just a funny little story for you about our crown prince) I'm one of the people that are proud of our royals, that keep out of danish politics, and fight to keep Denmark the lovely oasis that it is. 🇩🇰

Dronning Margrethe turned 80 last year and of course couldn't celebrate the occasion as planned. She did ask for folks not to leave or give flowers to her but to give flowers to the elderly. This woman never stops smiling! Always in good cheer and doesn't hide her age. No hair dye or teeth whitener for her! And the Crown Prince is HOT! ( Almost like our Norwegian Crown Prince!) In spring of 1990, I was living in Århus. My apartment didn't have a phone so I would use the phone across the street at rec center/tennis hall. After using the phone, I literally turned and ran into the crown prince Frederik which startled me and I said excuse me in English instead of Danish. It surprised the prince and he asked if I was american. We spoke for a few minutes. He was incredible down to earth. I would occasionally see him that spring/summer and we would exchange a venlig hilsen. I would have never guessed he was a prince.

I love our royal family❤️ As a child I lived next to their summer castle and even though their gardens/the surrounding parks are open to the public they use it themselves daily throughout the summer as well as around christmas time to take walks, ride, ski aso. So it is normal to meet them. I have played with the prinses, walked my dog with the queen who was out walking her own dachshunds, the children of our crown prins used to go a local kindergarden and would often be dropped off and picked up there (often on bikes👍🏼) by the crown prins Frederik or his wife Mary. I could go on and on but basically what I want to say is that the danish royal family is very approachable, down to earth and friendly as well as being individually very accomplished in many fields and professonial. The danish monarchy may be one of the oldest in the world, but they a modern royal family and great diplomats for our country❤️🇩🇰

The crown prince of denmark takes his kids to kindergarten riding a bicycle, chased by his bodyguards also on bikes. A friend worked at the kindergarten in Copenhagen and watched it happen every day.

I think the royals are more popular up here in Greenland, than they are in Denmark. Our crownprince also did a big stint on the sirius patrol in the northeast and north of Greenland on dogsledge.

You forgot that our queen has a ton of other interests too. For example, she also studied archaeology and still really enjoys archaeology and history a lot. Try and find pictures from last summer, where she cut the red ribbon (with a Viking sword, of course) to open the new Viking King's Hall at the Land of Legends. fun fact : when Oprah was in DEnamrk in 2009, she was introduced to danish rye breed, and she thought it tasted of earth, but she got ued to the taste after a couple of days, and when she returned to the states there was 5 packets of rye bread hidden away in her suitcase and she had an agreament with the danish woman Nanna Norup, who she visited and introduced her to the bread , about sending her more. so now she have a slice every morning, and she have promoted it for her fans aswell... sadly schulstad didnt pick up the gauntlet and made an invasion in the states, but danish bakerys in the states had a big uptake in sales afterwards...

During the covid we saw what's perhaps the first time ever for most of us, that the queen have made a public speech to the nation that wasn't the traditional new-years eve speech. She informed us about the importance of having in there and staying safe. Ans she informed us that ofcourse her otherwise great birthday would be canceled for the same reason. She did an amazing job and inspiring everyone and we had the kids sit and listen to her speech to us. We are so glad to have the royal Danish family here.

Well, there's a reason for that. They're related. Norway's royal family is, like the Danish, of the House of Glücksborg. King Haakon the VII, the grandfather of King Harald, was born Prince Carl of Denmark, younger brother to King Christian the X of Denmark who was the grandfather of the current Queen. Haakon the VII has the honor of being the only Scandinavian monarch to be democratically elected as King of Norway. Otherwise he wouldn't have taken on the duty.

@@Neko141212 they are related to the Swedes as well, but through both King Christian the IX and Queen Victoria. Maude already being a British Princess, had amongst met many cousins, one named Margaretha. She married the Swedish Crown Prince, with whom she had five children. Sadly she died before becoming Queen. She was of course the grandmother of the current King of Sweden. But her only daughter, Ingrid, married the later King Frederik the IX of Denmark. Making Queen Margrethe, named after Margaretha, the first cousin of King Carl Gustav of Sweden. There is another family relation to the Swedish royal family though, which “helped” spread the lineage even further. The granddaughter of King Christian the IX, Ingeborg, married the Swedish Prince Carl. One of their daughters, Märtha, married the later King Olav of Norway. And another, Astrid, married the later King Leopold of Belgium. Astrid’s daughter, Josephine Charlotte, married the later Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg. The Danish royal family is related to most of the royal families of Europe. I believe the only ones they are not related to is the Netherlands (apart from cousins from a marriage centuries ago), and Liechtenstein.

And the fact that they travel around Denmark on the royal ship each year is also pretty amazing. They really get out among people, ecspecially Frederik and his family. I had a teacher once who ran a couple miles of the Ironman right next to him and they just talked like two regular people and stuff like that just shows how much trust there is and i think it sends a beautiful message :)

Those travels are actually a continuation of a medieval tradition of traveling the country setting up temporary court at a local nobleman's castle (at his expense) and handling government business for the area before moving on to impose their power at another castle. Or like His father King Christian X rode through copenhagen each day during the occupation in ww2, he didnt want to cancle his tradition war or not, so he rode his white horse (most often alone) through the city to boost peoples morale.

Gentleman you forgot to mention that the Danish Royals all went to the same state schools, thus received the same state education as the rest of the population and took the same entrance exams to universities/military schools and academies. This is sill the case with Danish Royals of the school seeking age. The Royal princes are called upon to-do nation military service in the same way that other young Danish men are call upon to do. Kronprins (Crown Prince) Frederik did, all within his power to get himself posted to Afghanistan but, permission wasn't granted. Great video T/U

A little Lesson in the princesses dairies, Derek you mentioned in the episode that Crown princess Mary is the original princesses dairies before Kate Middleton, but actually it was Queen Sonja of Norway, because the then Crown prince Harald of Norway said to his father, the king of Norway "that he will remain unmarried, if he couldn't marry Sonja" Sonja was a commoner and they were together for 9 years before they were married

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but Christian X didn't want to bring back absolute power. The reasons for his dismissal of the government in 1920 were a bit more complicated and had to do with the reunification of Denmark and Schleswig after WW1. Following a referendum, Schleswig was to be split in two, with the Northern part (and its Danish majority) returning to Denmark, while the Central part (and its German majority) would remain a part of Germany. The king was not satisfied with this division and ordered the Prime Minister at the time to include the Central part of Schleswig in the reunification process. He refused and chose to resign after a heated discussion with the king, and the king then proceeded to dismiss the rest of the government and installing a Conservative PM who would be more cooperative. This was the king's right according to the constitution, but the action led to massive protests against the crown, and after just five days the king had to back down, dismiss his Conservative PM and install a compromise cabinet until a new general election could be held. Yeah I know I must be real fun at parties :P I didn't mean to write a novel, but one sentence led to another and here we are. Still a great video. Gave you guys a like and a follow! :)

Many years ago, before the world got crazy, the Queen would do her shopping in Copenhagen unescorted, and I was at the palace with my kids to watch the change of guards along with a number of foreign tourists, when I spotted her crossing the square heading home. I asked the Japanese tourists closest if the cared to see the Queen herself and pointed in her direction; but they politely declined out of disbelief.

the interesting thing with the Queens speak in 2020 was that she never makes a speak like that. if i remember correctly thats the first time she has done that. also showing how important that speech was. she normally only broadcast like that at new years eve. so it was a very very important moment.

At that time it was unthinkable and she could only be titled Countess Danner. She went on to start the Danner Foundation to aid victims of domestic abuse. How the different areas traditions, ways of life and also their tenacity to fight for change is very much part of all of us and yet still so different for such a small nation. How we responded to rulers that bankrupted or endagered our independence, and how we in todays age find ourselves having to adapt as the world and our country evolves yet again. It is all so very fascination, so glad you dive in and gives new perspective from the outside. I Hope you will tell the story of the Queens father, King Frederik 9th, how he was into bodybuilding, had multiple tattoos and also became key in changing the constitution to allow his daughter to be our queen. He was - and still is- remember ed with great love by all. As our Queen is and always will be, especially because they have a great sense of humour and do not hesitate to share it as all Danes do. I think you’re forgetting that the laws on privacy in Denmark are stronger than in the U.K. That then impacts the extent to which the press in each country reports on the private lives of the royals. All other things being equal, the Danish royals could get away with more if they wanted to, simply because the Danish press retains a respectful distance, whereas the British press has no such constraints.

I am a republican and am fundamentally opposed to our monarchy, but as long as the royal family keeps being so good and down to earth as they are right now, I don't really se a reason to get rid of them just yet. It might be an antiquated system that has no place in the 21st century, but when royals act like the Danish royals do, I think the benefits outweigh the negatives.

What i find most interesting about our queen is that her job (as she isn't a part of the politics of Denmark) is to both represent Denmark outwards and be a gathering point inwards. Basically she is to do PR and smooth relations externally and unify the country and be at important opening ceremonies internally. (Heard it from DR Nyheder)

Queen Margrethe’s younger son, Prince Joachim, divorced his wife some years ago, but they parted amicably. The late Prince Henrik sometimes complained about his position in the Royal household, but he remained popular. So the Danish Royal Family has been almost free of scandal and are thus better than the British Royal Family.

So usually there is someone present in two-three out of Greenland, Faroes, Jutland, Funen, Zealand or Bornholm. Also, did you know Queen Margrethe II also has an Icelandic surname as she was born princess of Iceland as Iceland was still in a union with The Kingdom of Denmark at the time (until 1944)? This is why Danish is still taught in school in Iceland and many Icelanders speak som Danish and many come to study or live/work in Denmark as young adults.

I served in the Danish Royal Guard a little more than 20 years ago, a firm Royalist by choice. People can say what they want, but we have a very "down to earth" royal family, they dont try to manipulate politics like the british royal family and theres not many scandals around our royal family (now that H.K.H Henrik has passed away, since his dementia did make a few small scenes).

I worked for Carlsberg in sales and marketing, the city has improved tremendously with excellent restaurants and a very cool Beer scene, and awesome coffee, I have lived in other cities in the US but always return to Philadelphia mostly because of the people I have meet here. I do think it is amusing that both the sitting monarch for Denmark and England, is not only a queen, but the second with a very noteworthy namesake. For male monarchs, we have alternating names between Christian and Frederick, with the first Christian crowned 1448, who was suceeded by a john, but after that came a christian, and then our first Frederick who was crowned in 1523. And while I know some people that don't support the monarchy, even those people watch the Queen's New Year's speech. (sorry about rambling comment) And my favorite story about King Christian X, is a story about the supposed flying of the German flag over the Hotel d'Angleterre (then being used as the Germany military headquarters in Copenhagen). The King riding by and seeing the flag, tells a German sentry that this is a violation of the armistice agreement and that the flag must be taken down. The sentry replies that this will not be done. The King then says if the flag is not taken down, he will send a Danish soldier to take it down. The sentry responds, "The soldier will be shot." The King replies "the Danish soldier will be me." According to the story, the flag was taken down.

Yeah, the new years speech is a big thing here. One year, one of the tv providers had some sort of fuck up that made it impossible for their customers to watch any of the channels. And it happened on new years eve. Before the queen's speech. And people were losing their fucking minds over it xD My family got hit by the 'black screen'. We were trying the television, didn't work. Went online to stream it, but the website had already crashed from everyone else who were trying to do the same thing. Once, their was an actor at my school, and he told us about the time he accidently spilled BEER on the queens shoes. The queen came backstage as the play ended, and the staff and actors had been told to bow before her when she arrived. Of course the actor was exhausted from the play, and had grabed a beer to cool down. but when he bowed, he bowed so much WITH the bottle that the beer came out and splashed the majesty's shoes. when he freaked out and tried to wipe it off, she kicked him away and told him in danish "slap dog af menneske, jeg har fri i aften" witch translates into "Calm down human, it's my day off"
