The city of York is England's finest example of a medieval town -- so well-preserved that it looks like you took a wrong turn somewhere back in 1335 and got stuck in time when you walk down these narrow lanes line with the ancient original buildings it's like walking through an outdoor museum but it's very much lively and functioning city.
So well-preserved that it's become one of the world’s most interesting historic cities with a rich mix of activities for the visitor.
This town is surrounded by its original medieval high stone walls that protected it from attackers in the past and since then it's protected the town from modernization because you'll find that the old historic area within these walls is looking like it's about 500 years old and many of the buildings in fact are older.

Lived here for 5 years while at university..loved walking the town wall and you always went shopping before 10am as after that it got too crowded....you forgot to say that the old Shambles was where butchers plied their trade...you missed Whipmawhopmagate ...the longest street name and also the shortest street... the name could mean either "Nothing at all" or "Neither one thing nor the other" . It is currently a length of raised pavement between St Crux church hall and a small road junction. also the pub by the river that regularly floods and you can see the high watermarks of each flood....

One of the few historic British towns that still retains much of its historic character, unlike Italy, France and Spain that have many. The Minster is of course one of the most important mediaeval buildings in the World. BTW, Wagamama is a cheap commercial chain hardly the place you would want to go to if you want to enjoy the best of North of England cuisine.

When visiting York, I would recommend taking the free walking tour offered by the AVG Association of Volunteer Guides. You will be met by a qualified guide, who will provide a short interesting talk and close look at some of the ancient buildings, such that you can then, wonder around alone and be able to better understand what you are looking at. As I said it’s completely free and that includes no tips needed, or commercial recommendations given. The association of which I’m a member has been conducting these tours for 70years. No need to book. Just turn up at the ‘A’board sign in Exhibition Square in front of the Art Gallery. Open every day except Christmas Day. 10:15 and 1:15 each walking tour lasts around two and a half hours.

Good food and friendly service was enjoyed at St Williams restaurant. The Shambles certainly didn't look like it was in a shambles! So much of what one might want England to look like in a sentimental mood. Not to be forgotten!

Yes, you could do a week in York. No doubt, York is an excellent destination, good for at least 3 days in the town, with museums, Minster, wall-walk, pedestrian zones and relaxing. Then you could do 3 or 4 day-trips offered by local tour companies in small vans, to the Dales, to the Moors, Castle Howard and Whitby. That countryside is all quite beautiful. Just google York daytrips.

Yes, there is lots to see and do, stay in a B&B for a better price than a hotel. But if you do, bring your own bath soap, they don't supply it...and make sure you have an electrical plug made for the U.K. Or you will ruin your dryer and curling iron.
