Sorry to bring up a sad subject but I heard that Phil died a few years ago. Is this true? Others that have passed awsy include Jerry Vsn Blair. Then of course Bill. He dying the plane crash inc other band members John Emma, guitar snd I think the piano player Wally? Yes Wally died in the crash as did drummer Walter Clark. Then just last year vocalist GG Shin passed away. It just sstd "after a long illness". These men were my heroes growing up. Especislly popular around Biston. As Bill libed in Lynn, MA. My old stomping grounds.

I watched this show in 1971. I was visiting my parents, and my mother ran across this while "spinning the dial" (Remember that?) on the television one afternoon; as I recall, it was a Saturday. I was playing [trumpet] professionally at the time, and she called me into the den to watch. I came into the room and said, "Hey! I know those guys!"

MF and Chase brought our trumpets to life first thing in the morning in the band room back in the 70's. I just wish I could have played close to THAT good. We got to see MF in concert twice. I doubt that the rest of the jazz band enjoyed it like us trumpets did. The 70's had so much going on, it was a great time to be a teenager. It sucked that Bill Chase was lost to us in '74 at only 39.

It's sad when people, with no idea of what or how much they know, pontificate on who was best at whatever they are talking about. Bill Chase was certainly one of a kind, they broke the mold after he came along. I'd say the same thing about Doc, Maynard, Wynton, or even Chris Botti. Dennis, thank you so much for sharing this video. When I was 15 or 16 years old, Chase came to Gulfport, MS and played a concert in the Gulfport High School gym, I think, and left everyone there absolutely stunned and breathless. He did a clinic that afternoon and was most patient and gracious as he took questions from deer-in-the-headlight high school trumpet players. That's a day that I have and will continue to carry with me for the rest of my life. I was one of those high-school trumpet players, but I also had an interest in the rhythm section and I remember bering blown away with those guys as well. As this was around 1974-1975, I wouldn't ask you if you were in the band or remember that show, but you were part of one of the very most unique ensembles to ever be around. Good luck and God Bless....

Geri - I had the same experience at Shawnee Mission West H.S. in Kansas City. I'm almost positive that this was in 1974. Went to the clinic in the afternoon and was blown away with his knowledge and talent, but most of all, how down to earth he was. I only wish I wasn't a dumb 15 y.o. trumpet player and could have absorbed more of what he was talking about in the clinic!!! I didn't know what I didn't know!! Then I attended the concert that evening and to this day, I think it is the best concert I've ever attended! I distinctly remember the show opening with all the lights off in the hall and on stage and suddenly the haunting opening licks of "Open Up Wide"! Just awesome!!

This chart was groundbreaking. It no doubt influencedMaynards Give It One published a couple years later. Another classic fast & loud trumpet piece. The most fascinating element of this premier Chase song is that throughout the whole piece it feels like the music is physically moving. The other, more serious matter is that this tune, coupled with Bill's FINAL entry before he died in the tragic plane crash indicates that he knew that he was not long for the world. Open Up Wide, first song first album, 1971. Close Up Tight, last entry, final album 1974. This is not only eerie but greatly foreshadows Bill's end. I met Bill in 1972. Actually shook the great man's hand. There was a special ''presence'' around him that I had never seen before and only seen once since. The only way to describe it was like there was a POWER that constantly encircled Bill but tried to remain hidden. Hidden behind a fourth dimension but would give a wink or two every once in a while. The Chase tune ''Twinkles'' may be an acknowledgement of this factor.

@@artkazyak3242 Bill was in awe of Maynard. Just the mere mention of the old man's name stirred great admiration out of him. I only met Bill once. Was at the brass clinic on the day of the Andover, Massachusetts concert, Dec '72. I'll never forget this day. There was a girl I knew, couple years younger than me at the clinic. She who would later become my best friend from high school. Even though we both married different people we stayed close over the years. The girl was strikingly beautiful. Like Liz Taylor in younger days. Well Bill liked talking with her too lol. She gave him her phone number! Later I would start dating her best friend in early '73. We were all members of the local H/S band. Later in Spring of '73 we went on an exchange concert to PA. Coincidentally, Maynard & his band was the guest artist at the school on our first day in town. It was a dream come true for me. Anyway so I get to the auditorium early anticipating the concert of a lifetime but I got fidgety just passing the time before everyone showed up. So I left the concert hall to stretch my legs walking around the unfamiliar school. Around the corner in a corridor filled with dozens of lockers on each opposing wall of this typical American high school I spied the same girl strolling with my own gorgeous gf but with a white haired Canadian in the middle. Arm in arm. Yes, History's all time greatest trumpet player enjoyed meeting the acquaintance of my two friends. They were smoking hot! Both of them. Although at the time each jailbait. was Barely sixteen years old. Nothing happened of course. The Boss was a decent man. Sadly, all three are gone today. My own high school gf died from cancer 2008. Her friend the Liz Taylor looker died a year later from a brain aneurysm. And if course The Boss died in August, 2006. When I get sentimental from these thoughts,m? It's the only time I feel even remotely lonely. However all three are in heaven now. Hope they put in a good word for me when the time comes.

@@artkazyak3242 You were fortunate to have seen Maynard. There was a mobster who prevented him from appearing with his own band on Ed Sullivan. While we've seen him solo on the show while on the Kenton band? The Mafia was promoting Louis Armstrong back in the day. Well I loved Satchmo too but the technical difference between the two musician's trumpet skills were miles apart. Basically this blockade required Maynard to play many more concerts in order to sell his music. In the Sixties Ed Sullivan was king. Even more so than Johnny Carson. Had Maynard been able to feature himself with his own band? No doubt but that he would have had many more hits besides Rocky. It's just a shame that the Mob had to intervene. However the Mafia once helped him too. Back when the INS was threatening to take away his green card.

Badass…that’s a perfect description of this track and the album in its totality. Bill Chase created a band which merged both Jazz and Rock styles. Their S/T debut album was recorded in Chicago in late 1970 and released in 1971. Ennea (1972) was their second release. Although it was not well received, I always thought it was a reflection of who they were and their aspirations of where they were headed. Pure Music (1974) was their third and final album. The failure to sell the Ennea LP on a mass market forced Bill Chase to re-group several times and come up with a new musical approach; the result was Pure Music. It was an eye opening and audible pleasure that combined elements from their two previous releases. Unfortunately, later that year, Bill Chase (at the age of 39) and three band members (Wally Yohn, John Emma, and drummer Walter Clark) were killed in a small plane crash en route to a gig in Jackson, Minnesota. Chase members released a tribute album in 1977 called Watch Closely Now. It’s comprised by what is essentially a reunion band made up of most of the members of the first band: Ted Piercefield, Alan Ware, and Jerry Van Blair on trumpets, Gary Smith on drums, Dennis Johnson on bass, and Terry Richards on some vocals. Jim Peterik, who sang the two vocals on Pure Music, splits the vocals with Richards. Overall, Chase wasn’t trying to imitate their peers. They strived to be original and succeeded in my opinion.

So many great memories,I was in "High"School at the those 70's era,wow i cant believe i stumbled on these on youtube,I was under the impression that All or some of the members were killed in a plane crash,Is this tragedy true or somewhat? The trumpet section on here are all amazing! Thanks to all!

When I was in 9th grade there was a senior who could make his trumpet reach past the clouds and another guy a year behind him could do it also. I was in awe of them and wanted to be able to do it also but high C was the best I could do and be strong with it. When marching I seemed to be able to do a bit more depending on the song. God how I miss playing but I'm 54 and am trying to pick up where I left off on the piano years ago. I love music so much, especially trumpets blasting into my ears!

I always respected Chase for his amazing technical proficiency; there's probably no one in the world who could play like him. But this music is not something that I'd ever want to listen to. Give me Herb Alpert any day!

There was a Herman Herd performance on TV in London about 1964 giving a reading of WOODCHOPPERS BALL and at the end of it, Woody unchained the trumpeter and walked him out to the microphone where he blew some intense notes to close the number. That particular video is no longer there. But it lives in memory.

Lip slurs are something that my band instructors never taught me when I was in school in the 70's. I remember my son's teacher always had them doing lip slurs but I didn't know why. I haven't played in 3 years now because I have too much else going on. We had a brass quintet for about 3 years at our church and while the music we played was appropriate, our once a week rehearsals were a lot of fun. We couldn't keep a French horn, tuba moved away and that was that. I miss it so much.

That's a shame. I was never taught lip slurs/trills, but I saw a book in the music store that I was taking private lessons at on the technique. Not only for technique, but practicing the slurs is basically calisthenics for the embouchure, it strengthens the muscles of the mouth and therefore you can hit the high notes easier and play longer without fatigue. My band teacher in highschool hated that I would jump octaves, throw in octave lip trills on songs like Amazing Grace . Perhaps that is why you were never taught the technique. I was in a band that covered Chase, BST, Ides of March, etc. And then came disco. And we all know that disco sucks and all but killed live music. But at least they didn't have auto-tune.

@@DrJohn-rl9zg I would love to do band all over again but with the new knowledge I learned a couple decades ago when my son was playing trumpet, I didn't have a reason to work on it at that point in my life, but junior high and high school would have helped so much to have been taught to do the lip slurs. That would take me back to the 70's. I thought my inability to hit a high F was because I was a girl and even my embouchure would never be as strong as a boy, but the one who took turns with me swapping 1st and 2nd chair when the high school director was in a mood to challenge us, I think he wanted to push us both harder, but the one thing he could do that I couldn't was ad lib solos. If the notes were on the paper, I could learn it, but on my own would have been horrible. When I was 9 or 10, I had heard Herb Alpert on the radio and for my birthday, I wanted his album. I didn't know there might be more than one, but when I was a teen and had money, I bought more of his music and I still love hearing him play. I was introduced to Chase and MF in high school. The only Chase album I got my hands on was Ennea which had Open up wide on it. I love every song on that side of the album There's a LOT of MF that I love, I think MacArthur Park is my favorite. Don't start me on Disco, that crap sucked!

@@survivrs I too played in a brass quintet for a couple of years. Clearly you appreciate classical music also. Perhaps you haven't heard, but last Saturday Patricia Janeckova from Slovakia, an uprising opera/classical soprano lost her battle to breast cancer at the age of 25. One week later I am still heartbroken and morning our loss. The timbre of her voice was exquisite. My favorite videos of her on KZbin were from 2014 when she was just short of 16 years old. Check out her performances of Ave Maria, and Hallelujah (with Daniel Capkovik - their voices are perfectly matched)at a benefit concert in the Czech Republic. She also did a wonderfully charming and challenging performance of the "doll song". - and many more.

Bill Chase was one of the great trumpet players of his era. But, one thing I've enjoyed in addition to the horn playing is the awesome rhythm section. Tighter than a virgins pussy and slicker than whale shit in an ice flow on all three albums. (plz excuse the colorful metaphors)
