They didn't lose half their money. Scott and his co-conspirator would take the stolen money to a casino. They would split the money in half and each guy would bet their half on a sports game. One would bet all their money on one team and the other would do the same for the opposing team. So no matter what team wins the game they will get their money back because one of the two bank robbers will win all the money on the winning team. So they just split the winnings again. Pretty brilliant actually.
