This is how to replace the solenoid contacts in a Denso starter motor. The link to the site I bought the parts from is below. It's easier to just call them up and tell them your car than use their parts finder online.

The "left" terminal on the solenoid housing is not the Negative terminal as mentioned in your narrative (time index 2:43). This terminal is the positive lead that feeds power to the starter motor from the solenoid. The Negative on the starter is connected to the housing of the starter housing. Thank you for an excellent video and step by step procedure for rebuilding the starter solenoid.

You need to make sure that the contacts are completely flush with the housing that supports them underneath. According to a few other KZbin videos this a mistake that is commonly made and it results in having to do this over again shortly after. They advised pressing down on the contacts while tightening, using things like a socket, screwdriver handle or even the plunger.

Could be a number of things, Faulty switch, relay, or starter. Did it do it before you rebuilt the starter?

You still have a blinking immobilizing key symbol when you turn the key to the off position, have you had any other starting issues?

Hi, where did you exactly get the solenoid repair kit from? I checked Kragen parts online they only had the touch points but not the plunger. I have the same exact car in the video and my starter just went out yesterday. Will a universal plunger most likely fit?

I wish you had continued the disassembly to remove the starter motor's armature and shaft. It would have been useful to see the condition of the brushes and commutator (possibly replacing the brushed and turning / undercutting the commutator), then cleaning and relubricating the main starter bearing before reassembly.

Exactly my thoughts as well. The starter motor was never even touched, this was only a solenoid servicing - but a good video of that I must admit.

Why didn't you show us how you got the old contact off of the bolt? Isn't this supposed to be a how-to video?

I wish we did this more often, and I wish finding the right parts wasn't such a pain. This is an excellent demo. One point worth noting is that the terminal you point out at 2:39 is the wire that sends current from the solenoid to the motor. If you're able to get a scope or dvom onto that lead in the car, you can verify the problem is in the solenoid (rather than contacts inside the motor) by checking for voltage at that point when turning the start key. As you say it will normally read ground if you check it with a dvom, since the ground is transmitted through the windings of the motor. When the start key is turned, that terminal should read 12V, proving the solenoid is able to relay voltage on to the motor. If your battery is good and if that wire reads a low value like 6 volts, there is upstream resistance. That upstream resistance is likely in the solenoid contacts, robbing the motor of power. I find the way the plunger is able to rotate an example of elegant engineering.

Very well done! I already had the solenoid apart on my 2000 Plymouth Voyager (same make of starter) and in the week it took the parts to arrive forgot the assembly order...clear directions and video saved the day (and $106)! Thanks for a great post!

My 4Runner occasionally has the "twist and click" starter issue. My dad replaced the contacts and that seemingly fixed the problem. However, very rarely, when the engine gets hot, I still get the issue. Any ideas?

Just repaired my '99 toyota corolla with this type of kit. $13 dollars on Amazon. Could have got it for $10 dollars on Ebay but I have Prime and 2 day shipping is better then 7-10 days.

I wish I saw this before I got a starter out of the junkyard (which worked good for a while but now is acting up again). I guess I'll be doing this repair!

How do you know whether its your contacts or the whole motor? My car (camry 2002 4cyl) wont start. The battery tested good and the alternator is ok too. I do hear a humming sound from the firewall. Before it stopped starting the car sounded like it had trouble starting like kinda slow but started fine. Then suddenly it stopped. I cleaned to terminals with water and baking soda, no dice.

Thanks for the Video man, it's very explicit. I have a Honda Accord 1994 EX. When I try to start the car nothing except a sound like a click. I'm pretty sure it's the starter because the battery is almost new and I already tried another battery. Can I do the same process on my starter???

@rexblack88 you will want to look at the brass washer on the plunger and see if it shows signs of wear or pitting, It is just a good idea to replace if you are doing the contacts already.

$35??? you got ripped man! I live in a small town in oregon and I got the same exact parts from our small town parts store for $18.50. And I thought that was too much for these contacts. Hopefully others gain knowledge from this and avoid being scammed. :)
