Thanks! As a soldier we used to use floss to sew buttons back onto our field jackets as it lasted longer than regular thread. In 2011 I did a field repair to a rucksack using floss, and it's still good!

As a crocheter, I sometimes use the Navajo ply (aka chain ply) method to get a triple-thick strand of yarn off the skein. You could use it on dental floss, too, for a quick and easy way to get a thicker strand. There are YT videos on how to do it.

In this same vein, People seem to have forgotten about cheap, available, binder twine in favor of expensive paracord. The price of twine is usually 1/10 of paracord, and will do just about the same thing as well. Last summer I rigged a sun shade in my yard with binder twine. It lasted from May until the first snow.

Love this video and have always used Floss in my kits for many reasons. The strength is dependent on how old the floss is and the brand but no matter it can be braided up to make a very strong rope replacement if needed. Walmart sells a brand call equate that is rather strong (waxed type) and I have used it with one sting to hold a 10 pound weight. They come in different size pack and I usually go for the 120 yard packs that are not that much larger than the smaller sizes. The main reason I love the stuff is 10 bucks can get you 5 120 yard packs.. double triple weive it its cheap..

May it be noted also that since floss is an inorganic fiber one can give stitches in flesh using it. I personally have done this twice on myself and have a relative who has done it three times as well. I thought I had done something that would be viewed as atrocious to the medical professionals in my family but it turns out they approved, one being an LPN, one a CNA, and another a physician's assistant. So if needed, it can be used for stitches.

@Robnord18 жыл бұрын
Floss makes a great way of securing rope ends to keep strands from unraveling. Sailors call it "whipping" and it's time consuming, but easily tied. Floss is also great for marking the nocking point and repairing the serving (portion where nock rests) on a bow string. In a movie, floss and toothpaste cut jail bars over a period of weeks...OK...this one may be BS. : )
@cthulhu66976 жыл бұрын
+Robnord 1 That's Hollywood. Ever seen those bars in real life? You'd wear out angle grinders to even slice one piece (top or bottom) of a single bar. And you'd need to slice both parts of several bars to make an opening big enough to climb thru. Guards would notice that way before you got a bar sliced. If you did slice a bar, they'd notice that before you could start on a second one. You'd do much better trying your best to kill a guard with a weapon you make from something, hope your side finds you and rescues you, or do your time if you're legally detained

Hi from Switzerland - a dentists daughter =o) - I hung all my pictures in the flat with floss. Also x-massy ornamental stuff you hang on your windows ... it's nearly invisible. And floss makes imho the best thread for sewing on buttons! At the camp my jeans zipper kept opening independently! Attached a loop of floss on that pull-thing, pulled it up and the loop over the jeans'button. (Your pvc-video → OK survival is top priority. But how environmental friendly is PVC ...?? But otherwise this swissmiss likes your videos! Tschüss!

Great ideas but careful my friends when binding body parts to each other or to another tool. Skin will definitely separate b4 5 lbs of pressure & binding someone for any length of time with floss can result in loss of circulation to that body part. When using floss for stitches couple things to keep in mind: use unwaxed since introducing wax into a cut isn't a good idea; floss is NOT sterile so get some antibiotics into the person ASAP & finally, unless you have injectable lidocaine & are proficient in its use, be prepared for the screams because the diameter of floss (esp the more expensive, wider brands) is larger than average suture. Probably best to use cheaper, thinner & narrower floss for that purpose. Just thoughts from an old RN in AL.

I'm sure 150 lbs would do it, but what's the absolute must you'd need if say, you were being stalked in the wild by multiple psychos and you kill them or they kill you? From what I usually see, floss is more compact than fish line. Although it's been a while since I bought fish line. Depending on what strength it is, the line might be thicker than the floss, to a point where it may be too thick for flossing, as you said.

@mactagg88148 жыл бұрын
I have seen videos like this unfortunately i do not remember where. I will look for them. Also there are articles online that provide stats for increased strength of various braiding methods. I have done a few experiments of my own using inner strands of paracord and floss. I am 212 lbs heavy. 3 unbraided paracord strands did not hold my weight. 3 braided strand did. With floss a four strand braid held me. I tied it to a branch and made a foot loop and it held me. If i find the 'sientific' info i have seen b4 i will share it here.
