Dental Sedation for a Child

This video was made to help our patients understand how IV Conscious Sedation works in the dental office. This was a sedation appointment for a child who was having 2 baby teeth removed for her orthodontic (braces) treatment. The important part about this sedation is that she is conscious and communicating (talking) which helps keep her safe. Most dental treatment can be completed at this level of sedation without needing to take the patient deeper into a level of unconsciousness or General anesthesia.

Compare this to my mother who had left me with a phobia as a adult due to me being scared at the age of 9 and crying due to pain she actually hit me several times when out of the dentist. Thank God parents are moving forward and helping thwre children

What do you specifically mean when you say "safety"? Are you referring to the measures that oral surgeons and dentists take to ensure safety? Or are you referring to what patients want to know about safety?

This type of sedation is called a MAC anaesthetic. Unlike a general anaesthetic. MAC allows you to breathe on your own and maintain all your reflexes. MAC is an acronym for Monitored Anaesthetic Care.

Well, that is the plan; however, it's very possible to medicate a child planning for light sedation and end up with a deeper-than-intended level of sedation. In any other operative setting, a dedicated anesthesia expert administers the anesthesia and monitors the patient while the surgeon operates. The only exceptions are dental and veterinary settings. Hmm....What's wrong with that picture?!

My son is supposed to get an extraction and a few fillings tomorrow under general anesthesia but I really wanted him to do it with laughing gas. A few dentists said it would be easier on him but I really would prefer the nitrous. I am worried about the whole thing and it is very upsetting.

My cousin had the same thing done to him in February they had to fix hit teeth and put caps on some of his teeth he is 5 and already had his procedure done

What about how the kid feels and if the kids in pain! I'm sure the parents can see the kids like this for the benefit that the child receives would parents rather say there children crying in pain?

is it better to see your child crying in pain & afraid?? my teeth are ruined from having dental phobia after i had a bad dentist in the 90s, i would never have been offered anything like this, even when i was really distressed. i'm still so scared but the sedation is amazing. no pain, no fear.

i have an adult tooth pushing into a baby tooth and they need to remove the baby tooth and take the root out using sedation and i have never EVER been more scared in my life

All I am fearful of is the reclining seat. Needle never have been fearful. Had three teeth extracted about 3 years ago. The only time I have had IV sedation. Put my head back on the reclined seat. Was so easy. Did not know anything until medication amount dropped. Said is it finished. Yes it was!

My daughter is 11. She broke a back adult bottom molar. On Jan 27th it was fine to be filled and have a crown put on it. But her dentist said come back on March 11th to have it done. We went on March 11th and the dentist said “oops. Looks like it got worse. You need to see an oral surgeon and have it extracted”. I am now beyond terrified. My daughter is terrified. I took her to see an OS the same day and they said it needs to come out. They will need to remove a baby molar in front of it so they have easier access to it. They said sedation. Is this kind of sedation in the video used for a procedure like my daughter is needing? Or will she need to be completely sedated? I know I can ask the OS, but looking for other opinions, too. Thanks!

Typically her procedure can be accomplished with moderate sedation and not general anesthesia. The surgeon has the ability to control that level of sedation and will need to inform you as to what his goal is for the sedation. A well trained general dentist can also do those extractions with and without sedation depending on the cooperation of the patient. An 11 year old would most likely feel more comfortable with a mild level of sedation. Hopefully you can get the right treatment and answers you are looking for to treat your daughter.

I hope your appointment went well! My tip and trick is to place oral anesthetic gel prior to getting numb. It helps a lot!

@@ginal.salatinodmdfagd6640 no it does not they try that on me I’m autistic and terrified of needles I felt every bit of the excruciating pain of the needle and the filling I have to have a tooth out with sedation at the hospital once that is done I’m never going to the dentist again I’m English btw
