i'm a talkative person, but when it comes to professional settings i kind of get shy cause i don't wanna say the wrong things and i hate that about myself! but this video reminds me we're all just human and asking the simplest of questions like "how are you" or "how was your day so far" really does go a long way

Hi from Australia! Thankyou I love your videos!! Ok so, I’ve been working as a Dental Assistant for 18 years for the same dentist, though he is retiring, & next week I’ll be working for a new dentist, I’m super nervous, any tips on working for a new dentist? 😬🤗

You're so knowledgeable and helpful. Thank you! :) How do you address patients who only brush once a day? Because of laziness..
@dentalelle
@dentalelle 7 жыл бұрын
You're so welcome! Ah yes THOSE patients - I explain why brushing twice a day is so important. I explain that plaque and calculus harbour a lot of bacteria and you don't want to keep all of that in your mouth. I tell them, if their hand was bleeding they would be concerned, bleeding inside the mouth is a concern too :). Usually those patients say they don't have time, so I tell them to wake up 10 minutes earlier to brush AND especially at night to brush so they don't sleep with all that "yucky stuff" in there. Hope that helps!

@@dentalelle I haven't been in the Dental field since 2008. My 1st job was a general dentist in 2004. I left without giving my 2 week notice. I was young and that was a poor decision on my part. My second job was at a correctional facility in 2008. I was fired. And i shouldn't have gotten fired. I'm telling you this because I need your input. I rented a car a month or 2 before getting hired. I returned the car but didn't have the extra money I owed they from extending my rental days. So when I return car I figured well they will put that on my credit. Nope! They put a warrant out on me. I had no idea until the 2nd month into my job. I was arrested on my job. I did probation and I expunged my record a year later. How do I explain that in my interview if I'm asked "Why I'm no longer working there"? I made mistakes, and i own up to that, but I don't want my past mistakes to dictate my future. And I definitely don't want to give up on being a dental assistant.

i think its good advice, but for me as a patient in an dentists office id rather the professionals be doing their thing, moving around from room to room, clearing the area, doing paperwork, and otherwise just let me sit in silence trying to not be anxious and making the vist go as fast as possible. im not there for entertainment for friendship. personally hate when people talk like this LOL

artichokez and you are entitled to feel this way. Some patients like to have a interpersonal hygienist and/dentist.

OMG, yes! All the talking to the patients...I can't stand it when the dental hygienist has their hands in your mouth, asking questions and you can't answer them anyways...also, as a mama of five kiddos, I just want to sit there and read the magazine and not have to answer anyone. Haha. My small two cents regarding retaining patients (I'm not in the dental field, just interested) if you can see a certain patient every time they come in they can feel comfortable and more attachment to you and therefore your office, then if there is an issue, they still feel more inclined to come back. My second suggestion, simply put is PUT yourself in the patients place/treat them like a family member. I have a weird high tolerance to any pain medication, it takes way more than most people. No one believes or can understand this about me! And pretty much every doctor, dentist, nurse etc. will get huffy/annoyed/straight up tell my husband 'She's just being over sensitive' while stitching me up! I'm already an extremely non-confrontational person and suffer in silence quite a bit, but you can be sure I won't feel like coming back to see you, if you just won't believe me. Great videos Andrea! I'm becoming inspired watching you and your passion for teaching/helping others succeed. Blessings, -Katrina

Thank you Katrina! for your comment! I agree with everything you said. I've had patients before share similar stories - of their allergies or tolerance and nobody believed them before and it resulted badly. Also patients who were terrified to be at the dental office and resulted in being rude or grump...classic signs of fear and I feel staff need to be able to recognize that. Some of us more passion for the field and patients then others :). Thank you again Katrina and keep watching!
