An aerial look at the aftermath of the derailment of 6J46 between Denton Junction & Ashton Moss North Jn.
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch will now look into what lead to this significant derailment. Fortunately Network Rail reported no injuries.

As someone else has mentioned, they said it was rotten sleepers, a miracle it took this long if that was the case!

Chaos over the last week with the broken down loco near Slaithwaite, this derailment and demolition of the rail bridge over the M62 at Castleton.

In saying the culprit is poor maintenance of the plate girder bridge, is a major factor. Looking at other footage of the underside of the bridge it looks like a can opener has ripped through it. The plates look to be rusted away. I used to be a plater welder and these kinds of riveted bridges would last forever if maintained properly!

I can believe they would mate, I can also believe it’s not been been too well maintained considering it’s a freight only branch. I’m guessing the wagons ended up on a section of the bridge not meant to hold such a concentrated amount of weight (as in the bogie).

Do Trains have dash cams? On a slow goods line I'm would expect track defects would have a good chance of being visible on a video replay. if the cause is vandalism I doubt if we will be told as it might be thought to inspire 'copycats' so I'm expecting "track defect".

Good point mate, I don't think the majority of freight trains have dash cams. Maybe it's something we'll see in future.

The one up in Carlisle was the only other one i've seen (after it happened), I think Les Gilpin has a video of the aftermath of that one.

Longitudinal beamed bridge......... oops.. Other factors to consider would be, curve, camber and loading of the wagons. I would search RAIB for reports on these types of bridges though.

Has this derailment been cleared? According to RTT trains are running again or is RTT telling lies ( again!)

Trains that usually use the line are being diverted.

It's still closed and trains are being diverted for now. Going to head over this week to see what work is being done.
